I've never been to an ATM, so I can't comment on that Wait, what? Really? You've never been to an ATM? Nope. Don't even know my PIN.

This is not about fast food but an ATM machine. So not the same thing. To be fair, the title asks a question and does not specify ATM. It says "Do people walking up to the drive up piss you off?" People are answering that question about all kinds of drive ups because that's what the title asks. But read the post. It says "ATM". No mention of fast food was mentioned. Her reply reminds me of people who read the title of an article and ask a question that was very obvious in the article instead of actually reading.

See, I would see it as unsafe only because a vehicle could hit her. But, perhaps there was an issue with another ATM? Wouldn't give cash/take deposits, whatever. Or if there was another machine, there was a line? The walk-up transaction can't really take any longer than in a vehicle, but if the next driver doesn't see her, it can be dangerous. But getting angry over? Perhaps a bit over the top.

But read the post. It says "ATM". No mention of fast food was mentioned. I mentioned fast food in my post because it is comparable to where I live. Most banks have an ATM at the front of the building. At my bank you go around a corner before you can see if there are cars in front of you. A quick turn around that blind corner and the driver not expecting to see a person standing in a driving lane at the ATM can be dangerous. There's also a fence to the side of the lane with little room to jump out of the way. There's a steep hill that runs to a creek behind.

I'm not sure about the other banks but I can't remember anyone having a walk up option. Also, the person's window may very well not go down (broken regulator) forcing them to get out of the car.

I don't get the outrage. At all. Sometimes people like to be angry about things.

And there are a lot of accounts today that have fees to go to a teller, but are free at an ATM -- My girlies have accounts like that! So it would be $3 or so for them to do the same transaction inside that is free outside at the ATM.
That said, I would try to use a walkup ATM if the bank had one. But if they didn't, I would walkup to an ATM. For those waiting in line behind me, they would wait the same time whether I was standing there or in a car! And I've never seen any signs that say "cars only" at our banking lines.

I've done it several times. Often times the walk up ones aren't working but the drive up one is.

Drive through ATMs are not very common here. But all banks have at least one ATM machine that is available 24/7. It is usually just inside the doors of the bank so that they can gate off the rest of the bank after banking hours. Really, the only drive through places that are common here are fast food and donut shops. Oh, and I think the ice cream shop.

If there are drive up ATMs, then there are always walk up ATMs. More times than not, there are only walk up ATMs with no drive up options.

It happens a lot where I live because lots of people walk to places but no, it wouldn't make me mad to see this.

I assumed it was not a drive through restaurant because (a) I don't hear those called drive ups and (b) pretty much they don't serve you anyway if you're not in a car.
I pictured it being something like walking up to an ordering terminal at Sonic or something, and not using the one on the patio.
Meh.
When I walk to the store, there's several businesses right in a row - a Starbucks, a couple fast food places, two banks, a gas station. They're all in the same parking lot. If you were on foot you would see the drive up ATM first and people walk up to it all the time rather than going to the one in the bank lobby, which is on the other side of the building.
This doesn't bother me. I'm sure I've walked up to that ATM a time or two as well. It's an ATM on the side of a building, that's all.

It is a bit of a risk. I have driven up on my bike a few times, but Don't feel very safe doing it why not?? People pulling in aren't very attentive. They are often pulling out checkbooks and papers..... I worry they won't even notice the person on the bike standing there.

Well, at the bank, I wouldn't go to the drive up teller lane on foot, so I would not walk up to the drive up ATM - if the bank were open - if it were closed, I would totally do it. I think it's dangerous to walk in a drive up. That being said, it wouldn't bother me if someone did. To add fuel to the fire, once my mom was in the passenger seat of my car and needed to do some banking. It was a weekend, then bank was closed, so I drove in backwards so she could use the ATM. Genius!!! My dd would do that for me too.

Plus the question posed here was would someone who walked up to an ATM piss you off? I don't care what your law is. In MI you cannot walk up to a drive through either. However, there is nothing posted at the ATM that says you have to be in a car to use it. Several banks in my area only have one or the other, not both.

I'm not sure I've ever seen anybody do that. If you are on foot, why not just go inside? What if you're not a member of that bank but that ATM is the closest one available? What if you had your debit card but not your bank card or picture ID on you?

Your debit card is separate from your bank card? You need a picture ID inside if you have the PIN? Look at your debit card. Does it have your actual account number on it? Your bank card would be the card that has your name and account number. Debit card: 16 numbers, often called check card, visa, can be used as a credit card long as you have enough in your account to cover it. Bank card: card with actual account number on it. Anywhere from 6 numbers to 10 numbers or more even. It is virtually useless except to give to a teller so he or she can find your account. And yes, in order to withdraw money in person, I have to present my picture ID and bank card that has the account number on it. They cannot look up my account with my check card. The ATM only needs your debit card and pin number.

In addition to my debit card I need either my PIN or valid ID.

I used to walk up to the bank ATM when I lived too close to drive and the lobby was closed and I just wanted to give the kids some cash. I wasn't the only one who did that, but it was a small town and no one ever got upset about it that I could see.
