One of my fb friends posted a pic of a lady standing at the drive up ATM complaining that she should have went inside. My response was basically, what difference does it make if she's standing or in a car, you have to wait either way?
Everyone was totally defending what a terrible thing it was to do that. All I can think is, soooo.. if she's in a car that's ok then?
lol

As long as she doesn't walk toward me. I could see it being a safety issue for both the person standing there (if a driver isn't paying attention) or the driver (If the person is a criminal all and planning get on robbie get the person in the car)
Other than that and she didn't cut in line, I have no problem with it.

How does she feel about horses? We see them more often than people walking up.
did you know you can get a dui on a horse in the drive thru at mcdonalds? I wasn't drinking, but played heck convincing the cop of that as we giggled hysterically at him asking if we were drunk. ha

Every place here has signs saying drive-ups don't serve pedestrians or bicyclists for safety reasons. She wouldn't get served and she's a twit that she's trying to skirt the rules and putting herself in danger while doing it.

Do you call the things at restaurants "drive ups", too? Or is it just the ATM?
I've never heard "drive up". We would say "drive thru".
I've never been to an ATM, so I can't comment on that, but every restaurant here has signs that say "we cannot serve walkers in the drive thru" or something to that effect. The will not serve you if you are not in a vehicle.

The banks in my area (that I've noticed) have an ATM by the front entrance as well. It wouldn't piss me off, but I'd wonder, WTH lady? Go to the front of the bank. Why are you in a lane that is designated for cars? Kind of like someone walking to a drive-thru window at a fast food place (designated for cars only) rather than going inside.

I'd just think it was weird. And yes, somewhat unsafe.

I'd just think it was weird. And yes, somewhat unsafe. no one was concerned for her safety, they were all ticked off that she was taking up a space in the drive up by walking instead of driving.

It's not allowed here. People walking through the drive thru will not be served. It's dangerous for a body to be where a car should be, especially when it's busy.

Well, at the bank, I wouldn't go to the drive up teller lane on foot, so I would not walk up to the drive up ATM - if the bank were open - if it were closed, I would totally do it. I think it's dangerous to walk in a drive up. That being said, it wouldn't bother me if someone did. To add fuel to the fire, once my mom was in the passenger seat of my car and needed to do some banking. It was a weekend, then bank was closed, so I drove in backwards so she could use the ATM.

I drive up on my motorcycle, what's the difference? Motorized perhaps? To me that falls under vehicle.

The banks here have separate drive thru ATMs and walk up ATMs. It would be really inconvenient to walk to the drive thru because they are around back with the numerous drive thru teller lanes whereas the walk up is in front of the building.

I agree that the DRIVE through is for motor vehicles, but i have skirted the rules and have walked up to one after hours. I would have taken my licks though if someone were pissed about it.

If she didn't bank at that bank she may have needed to use the ATM. I wouldn't consider going into the teller if I just wanted to withdraw some cash from the ATM.
I see it at a couple of ATM's around me but I live in a very walkable area.. lots of people walk up to them. I can't imagine people getting upset.
I would find it odd if it was the drive through to me that is for cars, but not an ATM.

Was the bank open? Maybe she didn't have her account card or necessary ID but did have her debit card. Debit cards do not have your account #'s on them nor are they proof of ID. My bank wants my account # and a picture ID any time I want to do business with a teller. An ATM negates that need. Plus she might not even be a customer of that bank.
As for walking up to an ATM, if that is the only option the bank offers, I don't care if you walk, ride a bike, or drive a car up to the ATM. Of the branches my bank has, one has an ATM where you have to walk up to it and others have a drive up one. The only thing I would worry about is being hit or attacked while walking up to an ATM but I wouldn't be angry over someone else choosing to walk up to one, even if the bank is open.

But not all banks have that option. The majority of the banks in my area only have one ATM. Most are positioned in the drive thru with its own lane and a few are placed near the front door and have to be walked up to. Some times, you do what you gotta do.

Life must be so difficult for some people.
If you think about it, the pedestrian making transaction was probably faster than if they'd waited for someone in a car.

It is called a DRIVE through not a WALK through for a reason. Face-to-face orders take longer. If you can walk out of your car, then you can walk into the building and up to the counter.
When I was in my teens, I worked at a fast-food restaurant. If someone walked up to the drive through window, regardless if any cars were in line or not, we told them we couldn't serve them from the window and they would have to come inside. It is mostly matter of their safety.
ETA: For banks, many around here only have drive up ATMS - in that case, the person has no choice if they are walking, taking the bus or on a bike - if the bank is closed and they need to use the ATM, they have to use the one at the drive up if it is the only one available. They still have to be careful for safety purposes but I don't have issues with someone walking up to it - since that is the only ATM available to everyone.

It says "Do people walking up to the drive up piss you off?" People are answering that question about all kinds of drive ups because that's what the title asks.

People are answering that question about all kinds of drive ups because that's what the title asks. But her post directly below the title did clarify what she meant. This board doesn't allow a lot of words in the titles. FTR, I still think it's weird, but it wouldn't anger me. At banks and fast food places around here they won't wait on you if you walk up to a drive through window.
