I finally went at the back of the Benedryl with scissors, pre-slitting the foil so that when I wanted one, I wouldn't have to claw at it so desperately.
You already are ailing when you are trying to retrieve the tablet. It doesn't seem right that you should have to struggle so much to get it out of the packaging.

I keep a pair of small crafting type of scissors in the medicine drawer just for this reason.  |

DayQuil. Fold the corner, my ass. You practically need a chainsaw to open one of those. When I'm already sick and weak, sometimes I just want to curl into the fetal position until someone finds me rather than wrestle that tiny pill package. Dayquil is by far the worst! I am already sick and weak and just ugh... you do not want to get between me and my medicine. The last time I lost my patience with dayquil I went at the foil package with a butcher knife. |

Yeah, I had to give the pharmacy a piece of my mind the last time my MIGRAINE meds came in a can-only-be-opened-with-a-scissors package.

But some brands of some meds can be easily punched through a friendly foil backing. So it's not as if the technology is not available to construct finger-friendly packaging!

Ask your pharmacist for one of the little pill popper gadgets they use. Our pharmacist gives them out with any meds that come in blister packs.

Can I say that I literally cried when I got home from the ER at 2:30 am with a broken wrist and found that the pain medication they gave me had a child safety cap that couldn't be opened one-handed? I then woke my dh up crying so he could open it for me. It didn't make me feel like a big baby or anything...

I keep a pair of cuticle scissors in my medicine basket. The points are just right to start a rip in the backing.

I buy my Benadryl in bottles, except that I wanted some to put in my purse. Didn't realize that those stupid blister packs were created by a devil, obviously, who doesn't want me to take the meds! HATE them!

a pair of tweezers pokes through the back foil pretty good, too. I will often saw around the pill with my scissors, as well. It does get ridiculous.
I feel horrible for the person with the broken wrist and child-proof bottle. that is a special kind of evil right there!

So when we buy a new pack, we cut them all open with scissors and put them in a bottle. |

I'm sorry, I know it isn't funny. But the image of attacking that poor innocent pill with a butcher knife made me laugh. However, I agree 200%. I bought this handy tool in the "as seen on tv" section of the drugstore. It's orange and has every type of cutter known to man -- it's got scissors and shears and a popout thing like an exacto knife, and anything else you'd need. I swear this was the best $10 I've ever spent. So one time I could NOT get the ding dang foil thing opened so I took the shears to it -- they're like scissor with small but powerful blades. Well... in my illness-induced fog I missed and pulverized the entire pill.  A few years ago my dd was taking accutane. That little pill was wrapped up in so many layers of stuff that you needed a crow bar and dynamite to get it out. So one day we both sat down and opened up every single pill package and put them in an empty pill bottle. That made poor dd's days SO much easier. oy... eta: I see that while I was typing others answered to say they do the same thing with opening all the packages at once. lol.  |

For DayQuil I end up cutting through between the pills for access. Heck, I couldn't even open a bottle of Aleve the other day because my back was hurting so much. Thankfully my son was around to help. I wonder how many people have ended up in the ER after hacking those clam shell packages with big knives? I've found myself ignoring all knife safety rules when I'm trying to open them.

I don't even bother trying to open them the way they're supposedly supposed to be open. I just go at them with the kitchen scissors, usually snipping off the tip so I can tear the paper back. Ridiculous...

I changed pharmacies because my pharmacist put my arthritis meds in a child proof bottle. I live alone and have no one to open them for me. After asking multiple times to have my meds in an easy open bottle I switched pharmacies and that pharmacist figured out that I would need an easy open bottle without me even asking. That said I despise the the packets. I will pay more to buy something in a bottle. |
