I've been e-reading for about 5 years now? Longer if you count when I started using my Blackberry (the one with the touchscreen that was crap from the word go) and downloaded the Kindle and Nook apps for the first time. My current ereader is a Paperwhite. Love that thing. Like some, I read across multiple devices: iPhone, Paperwhite, Samsung tablet. I rarely pickup a physical book anymore.
This week though, I came across a book I wanted to read but didn't want to pay the Kindle price and my local library didn't have it available in their e-book collection. They did, however, have the physical book. So I requested it to be delivered to my local branch. I picked it up on Wednesday.
Now I remember why e-readers won me over. 1: Tiny print is awful. Don't know why this publisher chose such a tiny print for a sizeable hardcover book but it's hard to read even in good light. 2: Reading in bed with a hardcover book, even one with only a couple of hundreds of tiny print pages, awkward. And so is using a book light that you have to constantly move around to illuminate the area of the page you're currently reading.
I'm enjoying this book a lot but I'm fighting mightily with myself not to spend the $13 or $14 dollars for the e-book just for the ease of use.

I was such the "I don't need/want an ereader", "I love the feel of paper" etc. Gosh, I've turned into such a spoiled brat. I'm on my third Kindle. I'm always a big baby when I have to suck it up and read a real book. Real books feel so unwieldy and the lighting situation is never right. I love to read in bed and that is so much harder with a real book.I got some great book deals at Dollar Tree a while ago, one book had been on my list for a long while. I started it and mid-way ended up checking it out from the library so I could finish it on my Paperwhite. SaveSaveSaveSave

I love my kindle but I also like physical books. Sadly I think I may need to replace my Kindle because it was one of the first ones out and the charging cord has a short in it and I can't charge it anymore without having issues. I looked online for a replacement and they didn't have any. I think I may get the one that has a light to it...not the Fire but the other one.

I totally agree with all you just mentioned. The e-reader are so much more convenient to use. The only time I prefer a "real" book is if there are photos or maps included because I find those to be much easier to see.

I find myself trying to swipe my paper books to turn the page or highlight, lol. I still love having books, but for enjoyment of reading, my paperwhite is so wonderful.

I am trying to use my library, just to save money.
I just bought another book on Kindle because the library doesn't have it. (The second book of a trilogy that's been out for nearly 30 years).
It is hard going back to normal books!

I hate reading real books anymore! Much of my reading is done at night, in bed, and I love my Paperwhite for that purpose. Real books are unwieldy and unlit. My DD, however, hated the Kindle and only reads real books. To each their own, I guess.

I have split my world into two separate entities: If I'm lounging around the house, reading for fun, I love the real thing. If I'm away from my house on an airplane, a restaurant, a hotel, a conference, the salon, nothing beats an e-reader. No one knows what I'm reading, and I don't feel stuck if I don't like the current book. Nor do I feel like I have to pace myself so that I don't run out of book at an inconvenient time.

In fact, reading my second right now with 6 more coming in the mail. I have my Kindle (3rd one) but sometimes I get in a "real book" mode. I'm on that kick right now I guess.

I pretty much exclusively use my kindle. On my third one. However, where I still prefer a real book is when I am waiting for the next book in a series to come out. Those are typically binge read kind of books for me, and I perfect curling up in my comfy chair for that activity. My household knows that nothing gets done on those days, and don't even think about dinner. There aren't very many books series going on consecutively.

I'm the opposite, I prefer a paper book, although I do like my Paperwhite and am not sorry I got it. And I agree that the print is way too tiny in some of the paper books. Not sure what the publishers are thinking...? I guess they're trying to save on paper? Anyway, that's why I try to get the large print version when ever I can.
Also I agree with how the kindle is so much more convenient for traveling or just being away from the house. I always used it when I was doing the soccer/football/ballet runs because I never knew exactly what I'd be in the mood to read so it was much more convenient to bring the kindle than to haul six or seven different books. lol
What I find interesting though is that my dd and all her friends prefer their textbooks in paper form even though all the colleges are now offering online books. Also the high schools around here are doing that. But dd said she can't study from an online book, she needs to flip the pages herself and refer back to things and look in the index while she's holding the place back in chapter 4, or whatever. lol

I don't want to agree with the OP, but I do. Times x1000! I read a real book about a month ago and I couldn't believe how heavy it was, how tiny the print was, and how dim the lighting was in my bedroom. I'm more than a little sad to say this, but I don't like reading on real books anymore. I really need the larger print and good lighting that the Paperwhite gives me.

Yep, it was the reading in bed thing that won me over and I've been a Kindle girl ever since.

The second I began reading from an e-reader, I never went back! Now and then I participate in a book group hosted by a small, local bookstore. Of course, I need to buy the book from the bookstore and not download it to my kindle app. I like this group, but I hate reading from a real book now!
If I can wait for an Amazon Prime order, I take the slow delivery option so I can get that $1 credit towards a digital purchase. It helps with some of the price of e-books.

I love my Paperwhite. It makes reading much more enjoyable. I definitely make the print larger. My old lady eyes showed up as a 40th birthday present to myself and reading paper books has been a challenge ever since--Do I have a pair of glasses handy? Can I lay down and not have the glasses press funny into my head and will I bop myself in the mouth if the book gets heavy? is there enough light?
Paperwhite all the way.

I love technology so I jumped on the bandwagon pretty quick. My first ereader was a nook. Then DS wanted one and he got the second or third gen nook. Then I sold the first one and ended up getting a , I love being able to adjust text size and the portability factor is a major plus. I think I would love the oasis but I'd like to try one out first. No one I know has it. I even tried BB since they have all the other readers. I just don't think I can justify the expense.
I did buy a cheap fire tablet and I hate that thing.

They can't stand the online books. I would not be able to study from online books either. I have to highlight, write notes in the margins, etc.

I am doing a good bit of spiritual read these days, especially Bible Study. My favorite Bible Study books come in both hardcopy an e-reader format. I find that I like underlining and making notations when I'm studying. And when I'm going back and forth from my Bible and my study book/guide, it's far easier to do that with physical books than ebooks. So I get the whole textbook thing.

I have a love affair with my e-reader I mainly read in bed and it is the best because I don't have to turn on the bedside light With real books I ended up with carpel tunnel problems because of the weight and positioning of the books that I was reading I don't care if my book costs $15 on the e-reader ... it's worth it!

Due to MS, I have limited use of my hands and vision issues. I had a Nook and it was getting difficult to press the ''button'' to turn the pages, so I bought the paperwhite and just love it. I do miss the feel of actual books but am thrilled with the virtual books delivered in an instant.

I should have also said that I do love borrowing books from the library on my kindle because then I don't have to remember to return them. If I keep the wifi turned on the books just disappear into cyber space on their due date. lol.

I am also another one converted to kindle. Larger books are uncomfortable on my hands, between that and being able to adjust font on a kindle there is no going back for me. I do check whether I can find ebooks at my library before buying them, and I subscribe to several ebook emails for discounted books as well. But for a new release that I have to read now I will gladly spend the money for the ebook. I'm slowly adding some of my long standing favorites to my ebook library and have appreciated the peas who let us all know when certain series were sold at a discount (i.e. Harry Potter, Outlander...).

Sometimes, the amount didn't make it a funny joke. I just had the worst trouble getting books back on time. No problem with my e-reader! Poof! Returned!

I can honestly say that since I got my first Kindle (I'm now on my third, I think) I haven't missed "real" books one iota. As someone who always has 5-12 books on the go at once, it's a great option.

Thanks for your input on this. I never buy books. I am a library user (since we live in the country, we get our books for 6 weeks.!) but sometimes I am on a wait list forever, especially if it's a new book. Once in awhile I get a book on cd. I was thinking about a subscription to audible...but I'd rather read. I asked about the e readers etc. & was told I would need to go to town & take a class . Too lazy to do that. I think I will ask For a Paperwhite for Christmas. Do you think I will still be able to borrow books from the library for the Paperwhite? ( I feel I am late to this game! )

I get virtually all my kindle e-books from our library system, as well as books on tape (are they still called that?) There are other online sources for free e-books too - 25 sources of free public domain booksSaveSave
