Do you take the stairs or the elevator? I always take the stairs just for the little bit of exercise, unless I am carrying too much. Surprising how many of my young, healthy co-workers take the elevator.

I work in the basement of a building. I take the stairs unless I have a heavy load to carry. I sit at a desk all day so I figure any little bit of exercise I can get is a plus.

I don't work on the 2nd floor, but I do go between floors quite a bit. In my building, you will get the stink eye if you use the elevator to only go up/down one floor.

Not working right now, but any chance I have to take the stairs instead of the elevator (in the mall, for instance) I will take the stairs. I was that young, healthy girl once-upon-a-time. Now I shop at Lane Bryant. Hopefully your coworkers are getting their exercise at the gym. If not, I'll be seeing them soon!

I hear ya'! I have 7 hospitals in my territory, and I am amazed when I see the young, healthy staff members hop on the elevators at each of these facilities. Not only is it better for your health to take the stairs, it's better for the company-less wear and tear on the equipment and reduced electric bills. It's also better for our environment to use less of our natural resources.
I will note though, that at my own hospital the stairwells are locked. There was an incident where a man was found sleeping underneath the stairs-he had wandered in from the street and found it a good place for a nap. There is an emergency button to open them, but it sets off alarms when used.

I used the stairs when I was working on the 6th floor. The more I excersize, the more chocolate I can eat.....and I love chocolate.

We are not allowed to use stairs at work. All access is closed, except during fire drills and real emergencies. I wish we could.

I work in a downtown office building and have always used the stairs for +/- two or three floors. Easy way to get a little exercise, faster than the elevator, etc. But last week a homeless man got into the building and was roaming around, so now I'm a little hesitant.

I use the stairs unless I am carrying my just heated up lunch back up to my desk, then I take the elevator. I'm not known for being graceful walking up the stairs.
eta: If I am carrying a bunch of things or they are heavy, I will take the elevator.

I take the elevator...I will admit it. And yes I admit, I have excuses and I am lazy about some things in life.
I have a legit fear of falling on stairs - have fallen a number of times specifically on hard stairs. When I worked in a big office, the elevator was right there and would just get it, take a breather and get prepared for my glorious (lol - it sucked) job. I am jealous of women that can walk down stairs in heels effortlessly. It scares the crap out of me.
I think some of the staircases are a little closed off and spooky (like at the medical center or parking garages) and if I am running late - elevator it is.

But last week a homeless man got into the building and was roaming around, so now I'm a little hesitant. Just an aside: That's something I was thinking about the other day. My company offers group exercise classes after work, so sometimes I'm leaving when everyone in the building has cleared out. I always worry about who I might run into in the stairwell of my parking garage, since it's wide open for anyone to get in. However, I'm in Greenway, so I don't see too many homeless people around.

We have a four story building and I never use the elevator. I'd like to say the reason is my health but the truth is, I'm pretty sure Moses used this same elevator before we bought it at a yard sale and I'm terrified of it.

For those of you who take the stairs, do you wear flats or high heels to work? I take the elevator because I wear heels everyday. Climbing stairs in my shoes is an accident waiting to happen.

You never know about those young, seemingly healthy co-workers. There might be a very good reason they are taking the elevator. I work with one of them. Very young guy, looks in excellent shape, played on lots of adult sports leagues. Then he was diagnosed with a very serious heart condition and, while he can work, he has a heart monitor and has to limit his exertion while the doctors figure out his treatment. I see him every day, yet it was 6 months before I learned of his condition. Most people looking at him would think he should use the stairs.

I take the elevator everywhere it is available because of my RA. Yes even for one flight. I hope no one would judge me for it but it seems they will. Remember you can't tell someone's ability just by looming at them. My hips are deteriorating quickly and I will need two replacements but am trying to hold off as long as I can since they have a life expectancy and I am fairly young for the procedure.
Please just hold the indignation a bit. You never know just by looking.

No elevator in our building, so it's the stairs every time!

Well, I currently work on the second floor, but it's my house. I have no choice but to take the stairs. Back in the days when I worked in a building with an elevator, I tried to take the stairs as much as possible, unless I was with other people who wanted to take the elevator. That seems like a lifetime ago at this point...

Where I work is all one floor so I don't have to choose.
Places where there is a choice I usually choose the stairs for 1 or 2 flights. I hate standing and waiting for an elevator and then being up close and personal with strangers. I got stuck in an elevator once and did not like that at all. Although if I am carrying a heavy load I will take the elevator.

I don't work on the second floor, but I always take the stairs. Maybe not if I had to go to the 50th floor, but don't have to worry about that, we don't have building like that here.

I take the stairs if it's just one floor. The only exception is hotels. Something about hotel stairs makes me feel uneasy. I watch too much CSI/Criminal Minds and read too many mystery novels. People always seem to bite it in hotel stairwells.
I used to be judgy about healthy looking people who take the elevator, then I grew up. There are many many reasons that people take elevators, and they are none of my business.

Elevator. I avoid stairs as much as possible. Most stairs hit right at an odd place in my bifocal that makes judging distance difficult. I can't tell how far up or down I need to step. It is a trip/fall just waiting to happen.

Not working any more but when I did, it was stairs as often as possible. At one of the places I worked at, my friend used to have to take packages to the mailroom every so often and would load up a cart with them. We didn't trust the elevator there since it was known to get stuck, so we'd send the cart by itself down the elevator, while we raced down the stairs to retrieve it.

I admit-I take the elevator 95% of the time in my office. I work in a 1970s building made of brick, steel and lots and lots of glass. The stairs are very steep, really big with no risers. I can see the sky and trees through them. It's hard to describe, but they freak me out a bit. That said, I work on a higher ed campus. I walk frequently to meetings and climb many other sets of stairs each day.

I used to work on the third floor of my building but now I'm on the first floor. For me it really depends on a lot of things on whether I take the stairs or not. Usually it depends on who I'm with and where I'm going. It's much harder to hold a conversation while walking up or down the stairs than it is in the elevator. I never carry food up or down the stairwell since we have to open doors on each floor and I just don't have enough hands to balance it all. Just myself I usually take the stairs, unless my knees are acting up then I like to keep on the flat. I'm 51 but don't look that old so no telling if people are judging me

I take the stairs as much as possible. Years ago a hospital I worked at had a rule that employees (as long as you weren't transporting a patient) had to walk up one flight or down two flights, no elevator allowed.
