I would guess colored pencils, as markers would bleed over the lines.
But that's one I've never seen before!

We moved to Texas a few years ago and had this on our supply list. If I remember correctly, it is colored pencils.

At my sons school, we have to have colored pencils specifically to color maps in social studies class. We had to have at least 12 colors but 24 were better to be able to color different areas different colors. Hope this helps.

I have never heard of that before. So, is it regular colored pencils or is there really a specific set?

Colored pencils. Get the larger variety size so they have more color options. My DD made charts with hers as well. Good luck ,

I've never heard of that! Please come back and let us know what you find out I'd have to call the school secretary for that one.

Pencils with colored lead for coloring maps.
If they said "colored pencils" the kids would bring regular pencils that were red, blue, colored etc instead of the regular yellow.

I would have never thought someone would interpret it liked that. It says colored pencils right on the Crayola colored pencils box

I would have never thought someone would interpret it liked that. It says colored pencils right on the Crayola colored pencils box I think it's regional. I alway heard them called map pencils until the last few years. I wouldn't pay any attention to what it said on the box. I'd be complaining that Ticonderoga didn't make pencils that weren't yellow and how does that teacher expect me to find AND sharpen 80 pencils in a rainbow of unspecified colors. :-)

Must be regional. I've never heard the term and if someone says "colored pencils" I immediately think pencils with colored lead. I would never make the assumption that they wanted regular [HASH]2 pencils with colored barrels.

Yeah, it must be regional, because I've never heard of colored pencils called "map colors."
And risking putting my foot in my mouth and getting a handslapping from hell, I'll admit, It sounds pretty dumb and uneducated. The term for the item asked for is "colored pencils." What you do with it could be color maps. It would be similar to if the school list had "window paper" for paper towels, because, you know, technically you could wipe windows with it, and it's made of paper.

In Texas also - and map colors/colored pencils are used interchangeably.

Is it maybe because it is in the south and colored sounded derogatory back in the day?

I wouldn't have had a clue what that meant. Colored pencils are colored pencils, not regular pencils with colored barrels.

Colored pencils it is. And yes, we are in Texas. Thanks y'all. I was totally clueless. Ticonderoga makes black pencils too. I know because I hoard them.

OMG my ds loves the black pencils too! He is 17 and when I told him now don't buy those at Target because I can get them a lot cheaper at Costco he said, yeah but not the black ones! LOL

Map colors is a new term for me, but I like learning regional differences in language usage. I didn't understand for the longest time how I was confusing friends by calling colored pencils "pencil crayons" and markers "felt pens".

Pencils crayons???
And felt pens are the ones I love to use to grade with, right?

I would guess colored pencils, because that's what my kids have always used to color maps in social studies. However, here in Illinois the supply list says colored pencil s.

Wow, I had totally forgotten that growing up we would call markers "felt pens". Weird, I wonder where that term was used. I grew up in CA.
