Wow, I had totally forgotten that growing up we would call markers "felt pens". Weird, I wonder where that term was used. I grew up in CA. That term was used here in England as well and the term 'felt tip pens' is still used to describe some brands and type of pens!

I grew up in Canada and I'm not sure if they have moved to using the term "markers" more than "felts". I admit to being a language geek and had to look up the history of colored pencils. They were originally sold as "wood covered crayon pencils". In Canada that evolved to "pencils crayons" and in the US "colored pencils".
If you do a web image search for either expession, you are going to get the same results. Map colors or map pencils didn't give the same search results, but it was easy enough to find out they are different names for colored pencils.

I know my mom had a pencil case full of colored pencils from when she was a little girl, and that was what she called them. So at least a generation ago (1940s/50s) that was already the terminology being used in the NE US.

As an aside, I'm sitting here trying to recall if I ever colored in a map in my life.

I think it's colored pencils. I remember older teachers being calling them map colors-or maybe it was map pencils- when I was very young. We colored TONS of maps in late elementary and junior high in my day. A quick google search turned up: What are map pencils?

Map colors is a new term for me, but I like learning regional differences in language usage. I didn't understand for the longest time how I was confusing friends by calling colored pencils "pencil crayons" and markers "felt pens". I grew up in Canada. They're pencil crayons there. In fact, last year, my Mom was cleaning out rooms and sent me all of our old Laurentien pencil crayons. I was so excited!
