It took me a minute on my list: 1 metal magazine holder for book box. I looked at that for a minute or so to realize it was just like it said a magazine holder.. Two kids ALL the way through high school and never seen this requested before. Guess this old lady is starting ALL over again with 1st grade... uggg.. Never heard of map colors either and I have lived in the south, midwest and west. Guess I didn't hit Texas in all those moves.. Colored pencils are colored pencils like it says on the box.

Is it maybe because it is in the south and colored sounded derogatory back in the day? I don't know...I am in the south and they were always colored pencils here? But back when I was in school, we didn't have colored pencils, we had those fat ass triangle crayons. LOL

Wow, I had totally forgotten that growing up we would call markers "felt pens". Weird, I wonder where that term was used. I grew up in CA. there was a time when the tips on markers were made from felt.

I have never heard them called map colors. I've been in Texas most of my adult life and have two kids in school. Weird.

I grew up in Louisiana. I believe we called them Map Pencils, not colors, but I might be mistaken. It was a long time ago. But, they were color pencils.

Yeah, that's a new one on me-never heard of map colors.
I do also LOVE the Ticonderoga black pencils. One year, when my kids were a lot younger, I bought several boxes of the the black pencils and my kids couldn't understand why I was so excited by them, so I went and bought the regular ones for them so I could keep all the black pencils in a pretty holder in my office.

So if you aren't coloring maps are they still "map colors"?

I have almost always lived in the south and have never heard them called map colors. We use them in my class to color code our Periodic Tables.

I grew up in CA. there was a time when the tips on markers were made from felt. Pittsburgh-born and -raised here, and we always said "felt tip marker". Not sure if there was any other kind of "marker"? And, I've never heard the term "map colors". Colored pencils is what we use. lol eta: I never knew there were black pencils. I think I'd like those! Putting them on my list now.... lol

Never heard map colors before! I can see where colored pencils might get confusing. And DS would bust out every goodie bag pencil he's ever got if he saw that. We call the pencil crayons. Crayons that are pencils. Makes sense to me.

Wow, I had totally forgotten that growing up we would call markers "felt pens". Weird, I wonder where that term was used. I grew up in CA. Me too (and I'm from CA too). When my kids were in elementary, they always had markers and Flair pens on their lists. And I'm still not over the fact that they changed the Flair pens, I don't like the flat surface instead of the ridges.

When I hear of stuff like this, it amazes me that we are all in the same country (most of us, anyway) and speak the same language.
But the power of the peas to explain it for the rest of us!

Here in Australia they are just coloured pencils. We also have twist-up crayons that are pencil-shaped. Markers are called textas, which is a certain brand but has become the generic term (sort of like Kleenex for tissues). Most younger kids like the Faber-Castell textas with the lids that clip together.

If they said "colored pencils" the kids would bring regular pencils that were red, blue, colored etc instead of the regular yellow. Really?? But the colored pencils say "colored pencils" right on the packaging. Crayola Colored Pencils

Pencils with colored lead for coloring maps. If they said "colored pencils" the kids would bring regular pencils that were red, blue, colored etc instead of the regular yellow. Really? I would have never thought someone would interpret it liked that. It says colored pencils right on the Crayola colored pencils box Oops...I posted before I finished reading! (Again!)

Before I went out and bought a super cool pack of colored pencils, I would find out if they are for the community pool. Most of our school supplies here have a basic 10 pack of colored pencils and the school distributes what the students bring. Buy the cheap pack for the first week and then later get a nice set if your child needs/wants it.

I think if someone said "pencil crayons" to me my only guess would be Crayola Twistables, because they seem a bit less pencil like than regular colored pencils.

So, okay, if I say the teacher corrects the paper with a "red pen", do you think a pen with red ink, or just a red colored barrell with blue or black ink inside? I'm fascinated by this, now.

Pencils with colored lead for coloring maps. If they said "colored pencils" the kids would bring regular pencils that were red, blue, colored etc instead of the regular yellow. And yet the whole rest of the country is able to purchase the box that says "colored pencils" and manages to get pencils with different colored leads.

My intent wasn't to be snotty. I am literally quite surprised that an entire region has to make up a new phrase for something other than what is printed on the box. I just don't get it.

No need to be snotty about it. My intent wasn't to be snotty. I am literally quite surprised that an entire region has to make up a new phrase for something other than what is printed on the box. I just don't get it. Well, first of all, 40+ years ago when I was starting school Crayola didn't make "colored pencils". They came in a generic package labeled "Map Colors". And at that time "colored" still had a very different connotation in parts of the country - colored drinking fountains, colored schools, and so on. So "colored pencils" would have been a confusing phrase back then. So they were called "map pencils", or "map colors" and in some places, apparently, "pencil crayons". So forgive us for calling it what it was always called. Bless your heart.

We moved to a new district when DS was going into 2nd grade and the supply list had "math kit" on it. I was scratching my head over that until I contacted my cousin who's son goes to the same school. It's a small container that you put some change in that they use for learning money. I never would have gotten that from math kit.
