I just went outside with my ds (8) and dd (4) to ride bikes. The neighbor boys are outside in the front yard playing and one is in just a diaper, ok no problem I would say he is about 18 months or so. But his older brother (around 4 maybe) is completely naked. Is this normal? Maybe I am over sensitive? When are they too old for playing outside without clothes?

It wouldn't bother me, but I would have my kid clothed. There may be a disability that you don't know about with the older one

Completely fine, as in a child being naked is normal and fine....as long as he's not vulnerable to a passing weirdo.

18 months is about my cut-off for being outside in just a diaper. I'm actually not super comfortable about it, but sometimes, for somethings, it's OK -- like eating messy ice cream cones, digging in the mud.
I wouldn't let my children of any age outside totally naked.

I'm not cool with a 4 year old running nude outside. Nope. I actually don't want anyone seeing my child, at any age, nude.

"Don't look Ethel", words from the song The Streak(er) popped right into my head. You know it will take all night for me to get it out of my head.

What kind of disability prevents a child from wearing clothing?

Does it make a difference if I tell you they are always out there alone and the little one ended up unattended on my front porch two weeks ago?

Wouldn't bother me in the least. I would probably keep my own naked kids in the back yard if possible. It's a sad testament on society that we have to be so diligent with our children's innocence.

I have 3 boys ages 1.5, 3, and 5. The older two run around naked All. The. Time. I have to out restrictions on things I never knew were necessary!
"You have to put undies on to sit at the table!"
"You have to at least have undies and shorts on when we have company."
Ugh. Lol. So yeah, totally normal. Although we live in the country with a half mile long driveway...if we lived in town. It'd be a different story.

I guess it is your neighbor's call, but it does seem old to me. There could be more to the story you don't know. My neighbor's kid was three and would only be dressed in a diaper anytime he was outside no matter the weather. One time he walked into our yard and took my son's expensive golf balls and shoved them down his diaper. My son yelled out, "Yup, you just keep those!"

It's entirely possible that the parents don't know the child is naked. We had a neighbor girl who would slip out of the house and run around bottomless. Mom had no idea.

I would be uncomfortable with my grandsons, who are close to those ages, playing outside naked. Even if they are playing in the water sprinkler I would expect to see them in a diaper or undies. Not saying there is anything wrong with naked little ones. Just stating what I would be comfortable with.

Is this an ongoing thing? I used to live "in the country" and had a fenced back yard, so I would let my four year old play out there while I worked in the kitchen. I was shocked to look out at one point and see that he had removed every stitch of clothing and was running around the yard having a ball! So maybe your neighbor didn't originally send him out naked? The toddler in the diaper I would be OK with, but it wouldn't be my intention for mine to be playing outside naked.

I don't think it's ok at all. Why would you want to tempt the sickos more than they already are when they see a child. Especially if they are out there alone.

In the area where we live, I'd be more concerned about sunburn than random strangers, but I think 4 is too old to be outdoors with no clothes. In the privacy of a fenced yard, maybe, but not out in the open where anyone could come by.
Children with sensory issues may be very sensitive to anything touching their skin. I've had a couple of students who would only wear very loose, lightweight clothes and couldn't stand anything with tags, seams, etc. Getting them to wear shoes was a daily struggle.

I am a firm believer that children need to be taught how to dress appropriately for the environment. That means wearing clothes in places where people outside your family may see you. It also includes wearing something other than pajamas or bathing suits when shopping and wearing shoes in public. It also means teaching them to dress up for occasions where dressing up is required. It's about teaching them to be civilized members of society.

It sounds like something DS would have done. He did have a streaking phase about that age. I would have make him put his clothes back on, though. And had a discussion about privacy.
I have a bigger issue with an 18 month old playing outside unsupervised. Every time I saw that, I would bring him back to the door and let the neighbor know that the baby got loose and was wandering around outside alone. EVERY time.

I know they have new baby about a month old, so mom is very possibly preoccupied. It wouldn't surprise me if she had no idea they were off the porch like that. It happened with one of mine once several years ago so I know it happens.
