I got a bridal shower invite for DH's cousin today. At the bottom it said, "M is registered at Zola.com. Print out your gift you purchase and wrap it up for the shower."
I'd never heard of the site so I checked it out. Apparently they register for things and guests pay for it on the site and it's sent when the couple decide they want to receive it. If they decide they don't want the gift they get credits for the site.
People can also give to their honeymoon or dream house fund or guests can just send cash for an extra 2% fee. They then can transfer the cash into their bank account.
So apparently I have to buy the gift online and print out a picture of what I bought? Is it just me or is this incredibly tacky? I'm usually pretty easy going but this seems so odd!

I get why it sounds tacky. However, some wedding sites suggest that you not bring your wedding gift to the shower but, instead, have it shipped to the married couple after the wedding (because then no one has to guard the gift table, and they don't have to lug eight crockpots home). So, in that respect, the fact that Zola basically has set that up AND apparently made it easy for you to print something to show the gift is kind of smart.
A little weird for the shower, but whatever. What is weird/tacky is the option to reject the gift and get store credit, or the option to give money to the "fund" (if I wanted to give money, I'd just give cash or a check).
