I have been around a long time (not just Peas & Refugees) and I had never heard this term until a couple of years ago on 2 Peas. Where does it come from and do people say it where you live?

I have heard it for years. Butthurt is someone basically upset about something. "They didn't have her size in that shoe and she was all butthurt about it". Makes no sense typing it but hearing it seems totally normal.

I'm "older" and have heard that term for ages. I've been known to use it myself.
So they say it around here!

We say it in our family all the time. It is kind of likr saying geting ones panties in a twist for something minor.

I've never heard the term. What's the context? Greenlegume on 2peafaithful's vent post used the term as follows: Keeping score on "likes" is a dangerous game to play. It's like setting yourself up for unnecessary butthurt. It almost seems like a Southern thing, but I grew up in the South and never heard it? So it's not from some movie or tv show or book?

The first time I remember hearing that term was when the movie Clueless came out. I was 12 and it immediately exploded at my school. It's never gone away. I hate the phrase and will never use it.

Thanks YooHoot and @peano Based on a couple of responses, maybe it's a West Coast thing?

So they say it around here! It's not a new term at all and it's definitely not a pea exclusive thing. Just google and you'll find tons of explanations, gifs, etc

I've seen it used online, but only in the last year or so. Never heard it in person though.

My good friend's teen son uses it quite frequently, usually to say "well you don't have to act all butthurt about it" or something equally as dumb.

I have been saying butthurt as long as I can remember. I grew up in AZ and have heard it here in WA where I have lived for the last 20 years.

The word butthurt was officially added to Urban Dictiknary in 1999, which means it was in widespread usage prior to that.
Yes, I hear it IRL and can't really remember a time when it seemed new.
I'm in TX.

I am just a cranky old lady, but I do not like that phrase. I think everyone above has summed up the meaning nicely, but I think there are other, less vulgar ways of expressing the same idea. I've never heard it used in real life and I don't want to. I hope my students don't ever start using it in the classroom either. I will be giving them a quick lesson on synonyms if they do. I prefer to be vexed when things don't go my way.

Not something we tend to say in the UK.

I first heard it a while back. In the context of somebody being upset over something but a mix between pissed off and pouty or blowing something out of proportion and stewing on it. Somebody might say "Stop being such a butt-hurt little bitch and get over it" or "Oh god, she's really gonna be butt-hurt when she finds out we went without her".
DBF absolutely loathes that word, and always cringes when I say it. But you know, sometimes it just fits the context. IMO, at least.
