I'm watching Tamron Hall right now (I just love her, so smart and love her haircut) and she just showed a clip of Cardinal? Timothy Dolan and he said it wasn't all tension and that Trump leaned over and told Hillary how talented and tough she was and she told him that no matter what happened, they need to work together. I thought that was interesting. I just saw that too. I often wonder to what extent they were ever actually friends or friendly, and to what extent they are able to maintain any level of professional distance from their conflicts during this campaign. I get the sense, "not to any extent," but then I hear things like this, and Donald's statements about her at the end of the second debate describing her as a fighter sounded sincere. I also wonder to what extent the problem with the jokes was not so much the jokes themselves, but the fact that we're all reading them through the lens of this really awful campaign. Anyhow, the "she hates Catholics" joke was ill-considered given the audience, and I think that she should have left off the Statue of Liberty joke given that she has been hammering him as sexist for months, so it doesn't come off to me as a joke. The one thing I actually thought was kind of awful was Donald's joke at Melania's expense -- whatever you think about the two candidates and whatever your feelings about Melania, I think this campaign has to be just a horrible thing for her to be going through (I don't think she ever considered either that she was going to have to do a bunch of public speaking or that the entire country would be talking about her husband as at best a dirty old lecherous man and at worse an actual criminal), and getting laughs off of her public misstep was cheap. I'm hoping she is going to have him sleeping on his gold-plated couch for some time.

OMG that guy looked like he had a stick up his ass all night didn't he!! Everyone knows you're supposed to smile and laugh, no matter how annoying the other candidate gets. Hillary just kept laughing at Trump's jabs. Even Trump kept laughing at Hillary's jabs. But Rudy Giuliani? I'm going to repeat my concerns of a week or two ago. I think he's showing signs of being not up to intellectual par anymore. He used to be quick-witted. The old Rudy Giuliani would have known to laugh, even if he was being poked a bit. Not anymore. I agree I've seen him on a few shows and he isn't the same man post 9/11 or when he ran for president.

I only caught clips of it, too, but the account I read about it said that Donald's speech started off good, but then it seemed like he went 'off script' and started the harangue that got him booed. He's *okay* if he keeps to his written / scripted message, but he just can't seem to help himself; he doesn't have the self-control to stick to the script.
And I agree, it totally wasn't the time / place for re-hashing the debate topics.

I've watched these for years and I was shocked. I've never seen anyone booed before. Trump has been going to these since he was a kid; I can't fathom what he was thinking. I also think Hillary's speech went too far but didn't cross the lines that Trump's did.
Didn't Hillary look great last night? I hope I look as good as she does at her age. In love with her gown. As always Melania looked amazing. I like watching people do dressed up - it looks so fun to me.
Totally off topic, but I was thinking about this when watching last night.
People forget that in many ways New York society is small. These are the people Trump has socialized with for decades. If he loses the election, I wonder what it will be like for him. Like him or not, you have to admit he had a strong brand before this. Now his businesses are suffering, he is alienating long term acquaintances and my guess is he will be dealing with a lot of legal problems when it is over. If he doesn't win, it looks like he might go forward with developing a new cable news channel, but I can't imagine life will ever be the same for him.

The end of Hillary's speech was amazing.
I think the concept of a roast at a charity dinner for children is a bit strange, however, she was a lot more civil in her jokes. Hers were little digs; his were flat out insults.

I agree with everything you said. My only comment is that I think it's completely unfair that people feel sorry for Melania regarding her husband's sexual assaults, whereas HRC was and has been vilified for not only staying with her husband after his affairs but defending him, just like Melania did in a couple recent interviews. (This is not directed at you epeanymous, just an observation)
I also feel bad for her, just like I did HRC and other then her obvious speech plagiarism and trying to reconcile my feelings of having nude soft core porn pictures of a potential First Lady out there for the world to see (which otherwise I'd have no problem with), I have no issues with her.

I have to disagree with the peas who didn't like the Statue of Liberty joke, I thought it was funny. That being said I read an article about her best lines for the night. Could someone please explain this on to me?
12. People say⊠Iâm boring compared to Donald. But Iâm not boring at all. In fact, Iâm the life of every party I attend. And Iâve been to three!
I'm missing something here.

I watched it and for the 1st 10 minutes of Trumps speech I wondered what the kerfuffle was about.
But the last 10 minutes of his speech was over the top. I think we make too many concessions for him.
I was tempted to say.. meh.. not as bad as I imagined.
But we have lowered our standards so much to accommodate him as a "viable" candidate that our standards are pretty non-existent.
So Congratulations Donald... you weren't as horrible as you could have been.
Hillary.. we expect better from you.
Doesn't this just represent the double standard with which we treat boys and girls??

Trump announced to the entire dinner audience that Hillary hates Catholics. (It's a Catholic event put on by Catholics, to honor the first Catholic candidate for president.) Yes, he did. Contemptible. What is contemptible is the disdainful way the Democrats write about Catholics in their e-mail and have actually started liberal organizations in the Catholic church whose purpose is to foment a "Catholic spring". It looks like a good many of you missed that story:

Doesn't this just represent the double standard with which we treat boys and girls?? ^^^ interesting that you put it that way... on NPR this morning, I heard a commentator say that comparing the two of them in this manner is sort of a 'false equivalency' because they are so different in their experience, etc. So the fact that there is so much negative about Donald Trump (his comments, his business dealings, etc.) that we (the media, the public, etc.) are looking extra-hard to find all the negative things about her as well. But if it was any other 'political' opponent instead of Trump, the negativity of this campaign (as it relates to Hillary) most likely wouldn't be happening, because in the commentator's opinion, the issues surrounding Hillary Clinton are not out of the ordinary for politicians in general. (and I'm paraphrasing, but that's basically, the gist of it was sort of comparing apples and oranges, and Hillary Clinton as a politician is suffering by the comparison.) ETA: as to this quote regarding the WikiLeaks comments about the Catholic church: âThere needs to be a Catholic Spring, in which Catholics themselves demand the end of a middle ages dictatorship and the beginning of a little democracy and respect for gender equality in the Catholic Church,â I've heard a fair number of news stories recently about the Catholic church (in regards to Zika virus & birth control, womens' place- or lack of it- in the Church hierarchy, the Church's position towards the LGBTQ community, etc.) and I think it's probably a fair assessment to say that a number of Catholic Church members THEMSELVES would actually AGREE with that statement!!

Didn't miss it, but Trump said Hillary hated Catholics, and these emails weren't to/from Hillary. So if Donald supporters aren't willing to hold him responsible for what he personally says, not sure why Clinton supporters should hold her responsible for things other people say.

Didn't miss it, but Trump said Hillary hated Catholics, and these emails weren't to/from Hillary. Many in the Catholic church seem to think that Hillary "owns it" because Podesta, her campaign manager, was involved. I'm not justifying anything, I'm just reporting.

I think both candidates should be ashamed of themselves. That dinner has always been about setting aside political differences for one night and engaging in self deprecating humor and raising money for charity. Both of these candidates disappointed me. I agree completely. They were both acting like spoiled 10 year olds. I am not a fan of either, but I thought Hillary would have taken her high road. It would have made me think a bit harder about voting for her. You expect this from Trump, I had higher hopes for her. I am still undecided..... Comments like this puzzle me. (Not picking on you purplebee--I agree it's usually best to take the high road) Why is it always up to Hillary to take the higher road?

I watched both speeches, and both are typical of who these people really are. Donald sees only the bad, only the parts that are "horrible", and makes the country/world seem beyond redemption-except for what he can do to fix it. Hillary sees that things can be better, but that there is a decent starting point-that we can all work together to improve. I felt it was very much the same as the RNC and DNC - doom/gloom vs need for improvement.
Both had some decent jokes, and both went over the line at times. And, as we have seen a lot, it's all about him, while she seems to (at least on the surface) to see herself as part of an improvement, not the improvement itself. Which is why I'm supporting her more than him - from what I can see, her flaws are things she has said or done, and his seem to be characteristics of who he is.

Perhaps you are not familiar with the progressive history of the Catholic church in America? Catholics were central to the labor movement and had a tradition and history of serving the poor. For many Catholics, the allegiance of many modern Catholic church leaders to the Republican party because of abortion is the break with tradition and history.
