We have a Target shopping center about 7 minutes from our home. Recently, there has been construction going on across the road from the shopping center. Yesterday they put up a sign that says "Aldi's coming soon!". From the looks of the construction site, it doesn't look like it will be a huge store.
What are Aldi's like? Do you like them?

We've had an Aldi's for a year or so but I have never been in there. I keep meaning to check it out but I forget about it.

We've had an Aldi here for about 5 years and shop there regularly. I save a ton of money on groceries every week. You have to be careful with the produce, because sometimes it's not super fresh, but other than that it has most of the staples we need. We usually go to Sam's for meat and some frozen items.

Ours is a small bare bones kind of store. They have low prices compared to other local stores, but not a lot of variety. Good for basics and if you're not picky about ingredients. Ours has a lot of processed food that we don't buy. I don't shop there much because I do better stopping at the farmer's market, local dairy and Trader Joes, but I know a lot of people who love Aldis. Just remember to bring your own bags or boxes and bring a quarter for the shopping cart. Oh, and they also only take cash or debit cards.

Oh, and they also only take cash or debit cards. That is good to know. One opened near me last week. I haven't been in yet because the parking lot has been full and I hate crowds so I'll wait to see if the initial "check it out" excitement thins a bit before I go. But since I don't use my debit card and only sometimes have cash I probably won't a frequent shopper.

I LOVE Aldi's. The one closest to us is currently closed for 2 months for a major remodel and I'm going through withdrawl.
We are Wegman's shoppers as well and while that is where I get the majority of our produce and meat, we do almost all of our other shopping at Aldi's.
They do have a lot of processed crap, but they also have tons of healthier options, especially within the past 6 months or so. Almond milk, Greek yogurt, steel cut oats, organic options, gluten free etc... the list of better choices seem to keep growing.
Ours has a great selection of "fancier" cheeses including gorgonzola, feta, etc. I'm also pretty sure that many of their cereals and condiments are name brands, just under the Aldi label.

Ours just opened this spring. It's very nice, well lit and open. I get a lot of our snacks there, usually almonds, dry roasted peanuts, some crackers and chips. Their cheeses are good, too. I was introduced to Dubliner cheese by Aldi. Yum!

I like ALDI. I just wish the US stores carried some of the same things the Germany stores carry. I get my basics there. They usually have inexpensive household items. I bought a rolling rack there a while back.

I haven't been. Most people like it for the prices, especially for produce.
The main issue I can see is they don't carry a lot of specialty foods like low sodium...things I use on a regular basis.

Love ours. Regularly get blueberries for 99¢ a pint. Their gyros kit is a great fast meal and their baking goods and spices are cheap and good. Also their chocolate is fantastic.

And don 't forget your $.25 for the shopping cart Not a fan because I try to stay away from processed food and the produce is "iffy " at our store.

Add me to the LOVE camp. I shop at Aldi weekly & am able to get 90% of our food & household needs there. I started typing out a list of things I regularly buy, but it's too long. Yes, there is packaged junky stuff there, but there are also tons of healthy options that cost significantly less than anywhere else.

We have an Aldi's and while I don't do a ton of shopping there, it's come in very handy with the big Market Basket strike that's been going on in New England this past month. I've been picking up a lot of staples that I refuse to pay much higher prices at our other grocery store options. The produce at our store is usually decent and if you're not brand picky you might love it.

When our Aldi first opened, the milk was cheap for at least a month...maybe even more. (and by cheap...it was $1.99 per gallon...but now that I'm thinking about it...it may have been even less)
I visited regularly but wasn't terribly impressed with most of the stuff. For example, their cereals are off brands, and the boxes are smaller. I get much better pricing at Kroger.
Their milk has gone up in price, but if I'm there I'll pick up a gallon. The stuff that I've found makes a difference in my budget are some of their cooking spices, flour, sugar, oil etc.
Their produce is hit/miss and I'd never purchase their meats. I've never seen anything that even remotely interested me in regards to meats.

And you would be surprised most of their items are name brand things just with their private label on them.
And ours has Tyson chicken way cheaper than anywhere else.

I love Aldi. I usually go there first and buy what I can, then go to Walmart or another grocery store for the harder to find items. They do have a lot of snack foods that are really cheap, but they also have lots of other staples at great prices. I have good luck with the produce and cringe when I have to buy something at the store closer to home because the price is so much higher. I have not had any problems with meat, either. There have been a lot of healthier options for staples such as canned veggies and organic broths, noodles, etc as well as snack foods that are organic, natural, gluten-free, etc.

Not a fan either. Our's in not in a great section of town, which may be why, but it was always very dirty inside and the selection and items were below the quality I like. I'm glad to hear others like it. If there was another near by, I would give it another chance from the responses here.

we don't have one here but one opened by my mum last Autumn and she's always raving about it - and she sent me a care package at Christmas with German cookies and chocolates that she bought there.
There's one opening later this year in St Augustine - it'll be about 2 hours from me but we visit there several times a year so I'll have to make a point of checking it out. We're rural and the town we're nearest to is a sleepy country town so not many options so I'm used to having to drive an hour or more for options - Trader Joes is about an hour away and I always stop in when we head that direction

love love love them. Their pastas are good. Blackberries are crazy cheap. Their European treats are great. Their bake and take pizzas are huge and very inexpensively priced. They have great Havarti cheese. Produce as mentioned above, can be really good or not so hot. Their dairy brand is the bomb; their greek yogurt tastes so much better than that crazy tasting Chobani. It's on a par for flavor as some of the better tasting brands. Milk is still ridiculously less expensive than other stores.
Their snacks are better priced; they have their own version of Pecan Sandies we love, and a lot of variety of specialty chips like flavored chips and pita chips. You can't beat their staple item prices such as sugar, flour, spices, olive oil, cooking oils, and the like.
We don't like their pasta sauces, and not their hamburger. To DIE for though, is their pork tenderloin, at a fraction of the cost of other stores. Tasty, too!
Cases of water are super cheap as well...and they have a lot of cool frozen treats, as well as some decent frozen entrees and fish.
I like their house wines, too.

My former hairdresser always said she thought the cottage cheese at Aldi was the best; she really liked that.

I love Aldi. It's a bit out of the way for us, so we only go once a month or so. They usually have very good prices on their milk. I also buy all of my staples there, rice, pasta, sugar, flour, baking items, etc. They also usually have very cheap fresh mushrooms and cauliflower at my store, the broccoli, lettuce and fruit don't seem to last as long as some of the other produce. They also have some very good cheeses and I've had good luck from wines at Aldi as well - cheap, drinkable, and unpretentious, without tasting like rotgut swill. Oh, and most of their chocolate comes from Germany, so it's STELLAR - they also have traditional German goodies around Christmas time like lebkuchen, stollen, and marzipan chocolates.
Ditto that - I will CUT a bitch for spending my Aldi quarter out of the console. Also, you might want to bring your own bags - they have nice heavy plastic bags available for purchase, or you can scoop up an empty food box in a pinch, but that's one of those places that I actually remember to take in my reusable bags.

Ill just add that I don't think it's anything to write home about. Milk is pretty cheap and produce can be a good buy. I would not go out of my way to go and I never have the feeling that the Aldi near me is very clean.

I pick up a few things occasionally- could never do my regular grocery shopping there. As already mentioned, the chocolate is great and the Havarti dill cheese is wonderful. I like the salt and pepper Kettle chips. I also picked up a huge bottle of Sangria for like $6- haven't opened it, yet. I don't like their brown sugar- smelled bad and had a weird consistency. I haven't tried any of their other staples. Produce is iffy- most of the time it has to be eaten within a day or so.
I really have to take my time and look- easy to miss things.

We don't buy all groceries there, but DH eats a lot of eggs and their price is always cheaper. Usually pick up other things while in there...ours is brightly lit and very clean. You get your cart quarter back, it is just the way they keep the carts from being left all over the lot. You insert a quarter to get your cart, you get it back when you park your cart. Surprised this idea hasn't caught on with other stores.
