The small check cashing thread got me thinking. While going to the bank is often out of my way, it is never more than a mile or so out of the way. Hell even now when I live in the country, I still get to town at least once a week or so.
Wells Fargo's ATM, I just have to put the checks in, it reads it, and then deposits it. I don't know if other banks have that.
So are banks really that inconvenient?

Our credit union is kind of a pain sadly. No close atms, no fancy apps or online banking without a $6 a month fee. But I get my accounts for free which is much cheaper than most banks that charge a ton for everything. I just have to go in once a month to do my banking. It's about twenty minutes away.

Good point about the credit union.
I do wonder about the fees though. I don't think we have fees at Wells Fargo, but maybe that is because we've been customers for 30 years?

Sort of. We use a local bank that only has a few branches. That said, it's a real rarity that we do any branch banking, so it isn't a huge deal for us.

I use a small credit union. There is only one branch locally which is about a 20 minute drive out of my way. I try to couple any bank errands I have with other errands I need to run in that town but I still only normally go that way about once every couple of weeks. They have decent hours for a bank and their services are wonderful which makes it totally worth the inconvenient location. They came out with an app to deposit checks using your smart phone last year and I've been using that. But for some reason it hates my payroll checks and always comes up with errors on those.

Mine are only a little bit inconveniently located; my main bank has a branch in the nearby grocery store with extended weeknight hours. And Sunday hours. Which is why I picked it in the first place.
And I can walk to my credit union, from home or from work.

I don't love the bank. I don't have an app for mobile deposits and I don't use ATM deposits. So when I have a deposit I have to go in or go through the drive thru. Because most banks are cutting back, it's always a long wait. Long like 4 drive thru lanes and if we're lucky, one teller to run all 4 lanes. Often, one of the lobby tellers is running back and forth from their drawer to the drive thru.
For me, it's not convenient because the service is poor. (but it's not the tellers fault...or even necessarily the fault of the individual branch...it's corporate decisions to save money)
I also don't like going to the bank because EVERY SINGLE TIME they try to sell me products I don't want. Every time I thank them for looking out for me, but I know what products they offer and when I'm ready and interested, I know exactly who to talk to.

My biggest PITA about going into the bank is dragging the non-school aged child in with me. I live in a rural area, but I have to drive to the closest towns for everything anyway, and they each have an abundance of banks. My regular ATM, where I stop at least once a week anyway, lets me deposit checks right at the ATM, and spits out a receipt with a pretty little picture of the check on it for me. So I just do that.

My bank closes at 5. When I commuted to my old job, I could never get back in time to get any banking done. Kinda frustrating. Now, my job is in the same town as my bank, and I can drive thru at lunch.

I bank at a small credit union and there are only 2 branches I can go to. Neither are close to my house or work so I never go to the bank. I get cash off my debit card at the store. I have 2 checks in my purse right now from mileage at work, one for $110 and one for $149 and they are from May and June. That's how often I make it to the bank! July's mileage check is coming next week so I should probably get there...

I have no local bank so yes, yes it is. Thankfully, we bank almost completely online or via app. When I had a large sum of cash, we had to drive 25 min to find a shared banking branch. We love our banks though, get great service and with the online options it isn't too big of a deal.

I live 250 miles from my credit union, so I was very pleased when they got a mobile app that allows me to upload checks. Prior to the app, I would mail checks in. The only checks I get are mileage/expense checks from work so it wasn't a big deal.

I think they are. I have a decent amount of $ sitting in checks around my house right now. I even lose small checks since I'm ordinarily not that organized. I also don't like it when 17 yo DD gets paid by check for babysitting. She has a number of checks she's never gotten around to cashing.
We bank with Wells Fargo so they are around just not convenient.

My bank has a branch right by our house so not really inconvenient. Although they may think I am inconvenient to them since if I actually have to go in... I bring a large tub of change

Mine is very convenient. Wells Fargo. Acct is free with direct deposit and it's located inside the grocery store across the street from my house.

We don't live in a military town any more. We just opened a Chase account as a secondary banking choice. So between the two banks we have no issues.

Even our small little town has 4 different banks. I'm a member at 2 of them.

We use a credit union where both DH and I have direct deposit. It's not in a convenient location for us. Very rarely do we actually go to the branch. We have free ATM use at WaWa and 7-11s, and now they have added mobile deposits, thank goodness!

My bank charges me if I go into a branch since I have a virtual account. I sometimes have cash from craft fairs that I need to deposit and don't like putting it in the ATM. I've opened up another account at another bank to avoid the fees. Kind of a pain though.

It's not inconvenient for me.
It's just a drive thru and it's pretty fast.
I go to the bank several times a month as my kids get checks from relatives and my DH gets checks for stipends that are not part of his regular salary.
I'd say I go 2-3 times a month.
Not a big deal.

We have accounts at 3 different banks:
Our main checking/savings accounts are at a local savings and loan that used to be a credit union. I don't go there a lot, because dh's and my payroll are both direct deposit. I have a 2nd job that I get a live check, so twice a month I have to go deposit that check. Not really inconvenient - several branches around where we normally roam, but if we go out of town, there are no branches or ATMs.
We have a savings account at a credit union where we used to have our checking account. The branch in our town has no drive thru, so kind of inconvenient strictly from a convenience point of view. And the hours are a little less convenient than I would like.
We have a money market account at a 3rd bank that we opened because that was the bank we chose for DD's account (who is going to college out of state - wanted her to have easy access to her account, and there are tons of branches of this bank where she is going to college). Not super convenient because there are only about 3 branches in the local area, and they aren't really close to places I go regularly, but not totally inconvenient. But I don't really have to do a lot of business there, so not a big deal.
All 3 banks have apps, but none of them offer deposits in that manner. I mostly use their apps to check balances and do transfers.

The bank is not far from home, but they have "banker's hours" most days (10-3), which means that they're only open when I'm at work. Saturdays they are open 9-1, but I find it hard to get there when we have so much else going on.
Our main account is at a credit union. That is horribly inconvenient to get to if we need to make an in person deposit (used to be convenient, but we moved), but we prefer it to the bank.

Well, yes. I bank at a big national bank with ATMs pretty much on every corner. But everything I do is online, direct deposit, etc. so the hassle us remembering to go to the bank. First world problem I know.

My credit union only has one office and closes before I get out of work, so if I need to do any banking I need to go on my lunch hour, and it's about a half hour round trip. Fortunately I only need to go if I have to deposit checks, which doesn't happen often. My friends know that if they write me a check for something it may take a few weeks before I cash it.

I do everything online. I haven't been inside a bank in a very long time. And I think it was to pick something up from a friend of mine that worked there.

Most credit unions use a co-op system or shared branch. You can check this website for a location. I worked at a credit union for 10 years, & surprising many members didn't realize they could make a deposit or withdraw money from their credit union at a different credit union. Here is the website.
