What does this mean? We already have some cities with stores that charge for their bags. Is this for any store or just the bigger grocery type stores? What about a little store in the outlets? I work at one and wonder if we will have this law there too. And if it doesn't apple to the smaller stores then where do they draw the line?

Stick up a link so that those of us who do not live in California see what it's all about and we might respond with an opinion! We have to pay for bags in the UK (with certain exemptions) so I am interested in the proposal.

We've paid for all our disposable bags in Scotland for years. Really no big deal at all, and it's drastically cut down on bag waste. All bag sale revenue goes to good causes. I've nothing bad to say about it. Use reusables or pay a small fee for a disposable. Simple and effective.

Our county banned plastic bags several years ago for any grocery or store that sells food (Target, Walmart, etc.) I think this ban would have been for every store like Macy's, Penneys, etc.

In Hawaii there are no plastic bags. You can buy the reusable bag at stores like Walmart or bring your own. Some stores give paper bags for free.

In some counties in Washington State (not all of them), bags aren't banned but they aren't given freely. Usually a charge of 5 cents per bag and those bags are paper, not plastic. Ticks off my husband to have to pay for a bag so he will stumble out the door with his arms loaded, crap flying everywhere. Really silly...

It can be a pain in the rear when traveling too We have 3 cars and the RV and it seems no matter how many bags we have they are never in the correct car/rig to use when we need them It can also be a surprise if you didn't realize you crossed a county line that does have bags

I am fine with them gone. once you get used to bringing along your own bags, you don't even miss them. California really needs to limit the use of those. I'm tired of seeing them flying all over the freeway, stuck to the bushes on the side of the road, and pressed up against the chain link fences here and there.

Supposedly here in town Walmart is now charging 10 cents a bag and they are smaller bags than they were yesterday. I hope the cashiers will now be a little nicer about those that bring their own bags.

Isn't this the one where the grocery store can't keep the profits from selling reusable bags and when you failed to bring your own bag, they charge you like ten cents? I thought the prop was forcing the stores to give that money to some other organization but I forget who

There were two props in CA that had to do with plastic bags - Prop 65 and Prop 67.
Propositon 65 · Requires plastic bag fees be directed toward specified environmental projects - NO at 55%
Proposition 67 · Bans single-use plastic and paper bags - YES 52%

I thought the prop was forcing the stores to give that money to some other organization but I forget who Yep, there were two different props about bags. #65 redirected the money stores made from the sale of bags. #67 was a statewide ban on one-use bags. #65 was defeated and #67 passed.

I live in Florida and we don't have the plastic bag law but I have been using reusable bags for several years now. When I go to Walmart, I select my cashier carefully because many of them are rude about me bringing my bags!

In my NorCal county, we've been paying for bags at stores for a while. They started out at 10cents, but now we pay 25cents per bag. There are no traditional plastic bags - either paper or recyclable plastic ones that are heavier.
Many stores give you a 5cent discount per bag if you bring your own.
I'm pretty much in the habit of bringing my own bags everywhere.

Here in South Australia we have had a ban on plastic shopping bags for at least 10 years.
You do get used to taking your own and it really isn't a problem.
We have just been travelling interstate where there is no ban and we were given bags at the supermarket check out with only one item in it so there are just so many wasted bags in that state.

They need to have a proposition about plastic bags? 😳 Anyone can write a Proposition in California and if they get enough signatures, it goes on the ballot. Our most interesting one this year was Prop 60 on the use of condoms in the porn industry (which I have to say everytime it comes up that it is at least one issue Democrats & Republicans agreed on - vote no . Many communities in the state have single use plastic bag bans in place already. SaveSave

Places that have plastic bag bans - do you still get plastic bags for take-out food? What about for stores like Macy's or Michael's?
I live in So. Cal. but everywhere I shop (including grocery stores) still gives you plastic bags. I just want to know what I need to prepare for.

It passed. And is in effect NOW. Went to Stater Bros for 2 items. Had ds with me. Forgot my reuseable bag. Had to pay 10 cents for a bag.
So grab reuseable bags and take them every trip

I don't know how it will work in CA, but Austin has a plastic bag ban. We stopped at a subway for lunch one day, not thinking about it. Instead of the sandwiches slipped into the plastic bag like they do everywhere, they just gave them to us wrapped in paper on the tray. When we were done I asked for a bag to take half the sandwich home, it was paper. When it was being discussed in San Antonio, there was a lot of histrionics about people having to take luggage to the grocery store to get their groceries home because they wouldn't be able to afford the reusable bags or the fee. It did not get enough favor to make it on the ballot. I would appreciate a plastic bag ban. I think some of the baggers at the store are in a contest to see who can use the most bags. I have to race them to get my milk in my basket before they bag it. Save

We've had this for a few years now. Any grocery store, CVS, any store that sells food charges 5cents for a bag. What drives me crazy is I will go to a non-food store but who happens to sell a candybar at the register, thus qualifies to charge for a bag. When I go on vacation it's so refreshing to purchase something at CVS and not be asked if I need a bag where I have to think and decide if the item can fit in my purse.
