And if you read the comments people are defending this. I'm losing faith in my country. What is happening? ? I have no answer to any of the questions everyone has asked in this thread. It horrifies and saddens me. But I will say one thing and that's to pass on the advice of my pastor -- "Do not read the comments!" She's been telling me this for several years and I always give in. But no longer. I am done with comments and in fact I just posted it publicly on Facebook. lol. And I tagged my pastor. No more comments. No more comments. I think you are right. I have to stop. It's too upsetting and depressing. I just got done reading a Fox News article someone had shared on Facebook about Obama and Trump meeting today and wow the thing people were saying. Things like "we are locked and loaded", "Obama is a traitor" etc. I am just done. I can't read that shit. I am so disgusted with my fellow Americans I can't stand it. I've decided instead I need to find out how I can volunteer to help elect more democrats, that is way I'm going to do to help.

I have been so sad to see the meanness that has come out. Trump's rhetoric has given permission to others to let their racism shine forth. Those kids chanting is just sad. I am a republican and I could not vote for him. I voted third party. I fully expected Hillary to win. This is what I was always afraid of with a Trump presidency and here we are.

I wish these schools could have some kind of way to help these kids understand the truth of the situation. Such as explaining the difference between legal and illegal. I can't tell you how many times I've read inaccurate statements over the past few months. "Trump wants to kick out all immigrants!" etc. No wonder these kids are thinking these things.

Yes! This is what we all need to do, organize and volunteer and stand up against all the "-isms" that Donald Trump espouses. Immediately following the election, when we were all still in a state of total shock that half the country chose this awful man as our president, a friend of mine posted "There is about to be such a wave of volunteerism and activism hitting this country, the likes of which the Democratic party has never seen!" Yes. I've already been thinking about this, and my church and others in my area are beginning already to talk about how we can be visible out there. We need to show the country and the world that the evangelical Christians do not speak for Christianity. My friend who is a rabbi is talking to other rabbis about making their opinions more known. There is an inter-faith group here in Northern Virginia that includes all different types of Christians, and several types of Jews (Reform and Conservative that I know of for sure), and many Muslims from the large Islamic Center here. This is where I'm focusing my efforts for now. My son also says we all should join the ACLU. I'll have to look into that, but of course there are many secular ways to be involved beyond my Christian focus above. I'm just looking at that first because it makes me SO MAD that the conservative evangelicals cause those who are not Christian to think that defines Christianity. As soon as we all move out of the grieving stage we'll be good to go.

At one of our local schools, students have been chanting "cotton pickers" at the minority students and giving the Nazi salute. This is a nice, white collar school district. High income, highly ranked for academics and safety. . 😮😮😬😬

Of course it "can". But it never happens here. the only discussions on illegal immigration that I have seen on here all include "building a wall to keep Mexicans out" and screening based on their religion. That is making it racist.
I think plenty of people on here could have a discussion about how illegal immigration affects our country, but when it spews into hate speech then I see no way to have a decent conversation about it.

I grew up in South Texas. We went to Mexico border towns EVERY SINGLE SUMMER. My mom LOVED the clay pots and we'd buy these big clay pots with her intentions of putting plants all over the patio, and the next summer when we went again, those pots would still be sitting on the porch with no plants in them yet! lol. Regardless, I wanted to say that there are areas of the river that are extremely narrow...easy to cross over on foot. People in Mexico know this. That talk to one another and they plan where to cross. Those are the areas that need the wall. We always got stopped on the way back to Corpus Christi (home)...we always got questioned, sometimes searched. Ranchers who live in South Texas will find dead people on their ranches. I'm talking about the BIG ranches that are vast. It's really sad. But these ranchers are forever having to deal with damage to their property or people breaking into their homes. More information here... South Texas Ranchers

I'm not saying (and I doubt Trump is saying) that a wall would stop 100% of those coming here illegally. But it will make it more difficult and thus easier to control who enters the country. I had a discussion with a taxi driver today... how big do you think the wall will need to be. To actually be a deterrent? I am thinking it needs to be tall enough that you wouldn't be able to use a ladder..so 2 or perhaps three stories. maybe even 4 or 5 stories.. But then how wide? The taller.. the wider it will need to be.. or deeper so it doesn't topple over... Then if people have a flat surface on top that will make it easier.. so it will have to be angled in such a way as to not be able to get over. And the Mexican border is approximately 2,000 miles long....

But for an awful lot of people in this country, it is about race, the chanting shows that. And the statements Trump made about all Mexicans being rapists etc. doesn't seem like it's about immigration either. And if Canada can secure their border well without a wall, why can't we? If it is about immigration, how about campaign pledges to increase border patrols, checkpoints funding etc. not "build a wall". Just want to point out that Canada only borders the US and Americans aren't trying to get into Canada illegally. So Canada doesn't have the same issue. Give it 6 months!!!!

Um, that wall will have to be monitored. Do you think just plopping a wall up will keep out people? They will find a way over it or under it. You know, like they already do with the border. So no, it won't free up any resources. It will strain them. And let's not forget the cost of upkeep and repairs from nature and people tearing it back down/punching through it. Because they will. That cost isn't a one-time expense. The 51M per year we currently give Mexico would more than cover it all. That won't even begin to build it! Yet alone maintain 2,000 miles of wall

if you don't want to be called a racist or homophobe unfairly, then you have to denounce these things. Nope, I don't. There frankly is not enough words in the entire world that would stop the left from slapping untrue labels on those they disagree with. So, no. It isn't going to happen.

I wish all of the students involved had to see the experiment "Brown Eyes/Blues Eyes. I had to watch it as a freshman in college and it really showed the power of believing you are superior. My friend's husband was told this week that he would get tossed over the wall when Donald Trump took office because he wouldn't approve an electrician's work. He is Hispanic and was born in this town.
