I burn water, so salt & lemon/lime pepper compose my simple spice repertoire. As an unaffiliated/independent voter who opposes racism (& most other -isms), I find this author hypocritical & prejudiced. Also, I'm surprised some posters on this thread are supporting this company, after they vehemently condemned the owners of Hobby Lobby, Chick-fil-A, etc. for publicly sharing &/or aligning their company with their personal political/social/moral views. Chick-fil-A was condemned for the substance of their beliefs, not for the act of sharing them.

I don't have a problem drawing a line in the sand where racism and bigotry are concerned. The point of the Penzey's email, and the point we've been trying to make to you, is that we DO draw that line, and while you may be offended, we're not going to stop drawing it for the sake of unity. Wrong is wrong. I guess you all thought liberals didn't have morals? I don't know. I'm not surprised or confused that Trump voters don't want to "explain themselves." What is surprising and confusing to me, is their refusal to decry the appointments of two men (so far) with well-known racist beliefs and ties to high-level positions, coupled with a simultaneous call for us to unify behind these despicable people. Well your broad brush isn't any better than his. Making assumptions about people and then acting differently towards people is hurtful. I do not like being treated a certain way because people are making assumptions about me and decided it was ok to call names and be nasty and seperate 'them' & 'me'. So you all rock on with your ASSumptions about people and create your little exclusive clique and treat people poorly and when the world goes to hell in a toilet you can just blame Trump. Yea that'll work. In reality in the last 10 days I've been bashed ( irl ) by people who proclaim to be against bigotry because of something I'm assumed to have done. Not even sure where the assumption came from. But it's getting old and it's hurtful and I'm tired of divisive 'us' vs 'them' shit from anyone. It's equally as wrong. But apparently according to you and the guy from Penzys it ok to treat me like shit because somewhere along the line someone must have decided chubby middle aged white women from north NJ must have voted for trump. Without even getting to know me and without me even speaking. Go to hell- it's not ok. It's just not. Wrap it up how you want to in order to justify it to your self, make yourself feel better and 'superior' to those you deem 'unfit' but it's still bigotry and discrimination. I'm tired of being abused because I 'deserve it'. Apparently our country is filled with a bunch of bitter bigots who feel righteous attacking others based on assumptions It's sad really. If you didn't vote for Trump, none of this is directed at you. I'm not sure what your problem is.

If anyone knows of a good diy spice that tastes like Penzeys fox point seasoning please share. I've heard good things about trader Joe's spices. We don't have that store here though. We don't have whole foods either. Trader Joe's, at least the local ones, has a very limited selection of herbs and spices. You really aren't missing anything besides low prices on maybe a dozen very basic seasonings. ETA they do carry a nice variety of different salts and peppers, though. Penzeys sent me a free Fox Point last time I ordered. If they do that again, I'll send it on to you if you like. At least you'll know they didn't make any money on it. She can buy spices from her local grocery store matching the ingredients from the fox point label. The point is Penzey isn't any better than other brands, they just market themselves well and charge more.

They are priced under what you pay for McCormick's spices, etc. and they are fresher.

Felt obligated to chime in here, since I am generally the one posting the Penzey's deals.
I received my latest order today. My cats love to play with the wrapping paper packing material. I took a picture of them and emailed it to Bill Penzey, along with a quick message of support.
I will admit to giving my business to some companies that I don't agree with politically, simply because I like their products. The aforementioned Chick Fil A comes to mind. And I also give my business to many companies that I have done no research on and have no idea where they stand on the issues. Hey, a girl needs her Always Infinity, right? But it makes me happy to support a company that I DO agree with on issues, and that is open about their stance on those issues, so that if you do want to "vote with your dollar", you can do so in an informed manner. I will continue to post Penzey's deals for the peas that want a great deal on a great product, and I hope that I can do so without those threads becoming a battleground.

Try ordering from my favorite spice shop, Savory Spice shop, based in Colorado. I get ALL my spices from them, I think they are better than Penzeys ANd yeah, I'm kinda done being preached at by any business. I didn't vote for Trump, but this hits me the wrong way. Savory Spice ShopThis is where I order my spices from. A+ Jen

I'm sorry you've been treated badly by people in your real life. I don't think either Bill Penzey or Merge espoused deciding how someone voted (regardless of the facts) and then attacking them for voting "wrong." I'm not even sure either of them espoused verbal attacks on any individual who did vote for Trump. Maybe I'd better go back and re-read the originals. I thought they were talking about holding the mass of people, in a more general sense, who voted for/supported Trump responsible when he actually does what he said he was going to do and it's BAD. Because it IS going to be bad, I think.

I thought the same thing when I was reading last night, but I just didn't want to "go there". A person can live for 50/60/70 years, and come to there own conclusions about moral issues based on what they have seen in that time. As long as those are the popular opinion, then they are applauded. A person can live for that amount of time and decide the best moral standards to follow were described thousands of years ago, and that person is admonished. It does seem a double standard to me. I'm sorry you feel that way. To me, the difference is this: the beliefs of the Chick Fil A owners, Hobby Lobby, Trump/Pence, etc. are to marginalize certain groups of people by denying them the same basic rights the rest of us enjoy, based on their own moral standards. The beliefs of Penzeys are to stand up against that marginalization/discrimination by calling it out for what it is. I get that it may be difficult for some people to read, and I also get that the original email may have been unclear in characterizing all Republicans as having voted for a racist candidate (when some chose not to vote for Trump). But to me, this is not about two different but equally valid points of view. In the case of this particular election, this is about choosing to support a racist, misogynist candidate vs. choosing to speak out against him. That is not a double standard in my opinion. That's a simple matter of right vs. wrong. And if I may gently beat this dead horse one more time: this is what those of us who are angry about the results of this election keep telling all of you. This is not a simple political difference, and it's not a matter of two competing but equally valid ideologies. One of the candidates in this election spent his whole campaign expressing racist, bigoted, misogynistic views, and "you" voted for him. That was "your" right, but "we" are still going to draw certain conclusions from that, especially when "you" are silent on the subject of every frightening cabinet/advisory appointment. "You" keep accusing "us" of not listening to "you," but "you" are most certainly not listening to "us." (All the quotation marks to signify a general use of the terms you and us, and not direction toward any individual here.) Agree completely. It is a false equivalency to say that the people being hurt by actions equals the people being hurt because they supported the candidate whose actions hurt people. In other words, if you actually experience racism, sexism, etc. it totally outweighs being hurt because people think you might be racist, sexist, etc because you supported Trump.

80%? Where is that number from? I think it is a stretch. I have heard that 25% of eligible voters, voted for DT. If you add in those who didn't vote with those who voted for the other three candidates. Last I read, the numbers were very close. So the approximate percentage that didn't vote for him is about the same percentage that didn't vote for her.

It is hard to avoid McCormicks, it is all that stores except for Whole Foods, carry around here - and I live not too far from you. The McCormick plastic bottles with red caps for common spices, and the glass bottles with green labels for spices like curries, garam masala, smoked paprika, etc. Fresh oregano in the half oz - tall bottle size - for $3.95 at Penzeys
Fresh ground Cumin for $3.45 for short bottle $5.95 for tall bottle.I don't know when the last time you went spice shopping, but when I've needed something immediately for a recipe and run out to the grocery store, I have been shocked at how expensive the tall bottles are. Ground cloves, for example, are insanely expensive in both the small or tall bottles.

Each candidate received approximately 60 million votes. That's around 20% of the total U.S. population. Therefore, 80% of Americans did NOT vote for him. Many people can't vote (too young, not citizens, convicted felons) and only about half of those who can vote, did vote. And more than half of those voting, voted for Hillary. That's where the figures come from.

But the bruhahaha with Hobby Lobby was that they were trying to foist there religious beliefs on their employees, through their health care plan. I'm familiar with the controversies surrounding various companies whose owners publicly reveal their political/social/moral views, & the outrage that they dare disclose them as business owners by some members/posters. I find this spice company owner guilty of making assumptions about a group of prople & labeling/treating them differently as a result, something he claims to oppose.Thankfully, we live in a country where we are all free to express our views!

elaine I think the short Penzey bottles cost the same as the tall grocery store bottles but I'll check again next time I go shopping, just went yesterday, wish I had seen this thread before then. I go through bottles of Trader Joes cumin and curry powder and whole foods 365 Turmeric and coriander. I bought Penzey's sweet curry and Garam masala and didn't notice any freshness difference. In fact I already have Cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, black pepper, nutmeg, ginger in my cabinet so there was no need to get a small bottle of a combo.

I appreciate that he spoke out against hate and discrimination. I'm sure he knew that he might lose business for taking a public stand, and decided that speaking out against what's happening to this country was more important than selling more spices. I admire him for his courage and conviction of principles, and I'm feeling the need to change up ideas for my Christmas list and go make a large order. Thank you for sharing his letter-I wouldn't have known about this since I wasn't on the email list.

Mural of Flavor is another must-have blend.

All of the blends I've tried have been great - some of my favorites are Mural of Flavor, Tuscan Sunset and Fox Point. I've been really happy with the quality and freshness of everything I've gotten from Penzeys.

You know, I am amazed at what this place has become. I have been here and the old boards since my kid was born. She will be 16 soon. I have come and gone a few times, but I think it is now time to go for good.
I will tell you that I did vote for Obama the first time around, because I believed all of his talk. I personally felt he didnt do what he "sold himself as".
As time has gone on, I have gotten really tired of how this country has become.
I decided to vote Repub.. There was no way I was voting for Hilary. Maybe if there had been a candidate for the dems (of which I am registered) that had their own mind and stance, I would have voted for them.
So, since I voted republican, not necessarily Trump, but Repub. I am now all kinds of nasty things, racist, white supremacist, hater ect. Yeah, because you know me personally.
I am sick to death of it all. Why sit here and read things that many of you say to people you do not even know.
So I'm done too.
Commence at calling me yet more names.

Perhaps your anger would be better directed at the candidate you elected and the Republican Party who are nominating and appointing racist, sexist, anti immigrant white nationalists with what they think is your support. And I still don't understand how people thought they were only voting for the parts of Trump they agree with, and could cut out the undesirable racism/sexism/homophobia/xenophobia. The totality of the candidate was elected, and an awful lot of people have a problem with a government of racism/sexism/homophobia/xenophobia.

It has been interesting everyone's viewpoints. I thought I would chime in 1 more time with what portion bother me the most:
If you are lucky and younger family members are still coming over for Thanksgiving, before it's too late, take a moment and honestly think about how your actions must look through their eyes. Simply saying "I never thought he'd win" might be enough. But if you have the means, leaving a receipt from a sizable donation to the ACLU or the SPLC accidentally laying around where you carve the turkey, might go over even better.
In my mind, he is making generalizations about families and youth as well as suggesting that a donation will atone for what he considers "wrong" To be honest I'm not sure I've seen anything that shows a breakdown in the voting by age. So what age are the "youth" referenced in the e-mail.

To me, that refers to college-aged through young adult children who still come over for Thanksgiving, rather than hosting their own with the families they started. Old enough to understand what Trump stands for, and know what a receipt for a donation to a group would mean, but young enough to still go to their parents' for Thanksgiving.

So what age are the "youth" referenced in the e-mail. I am admittedly terrible at remembering exact statistics and their source. However, I did see a breakdown early on that showed something like 72% of people ages 25-35 voted for Hillary. (Please, if someone finds the exact numbers, don't criticize me! I am sure my numbers are off. All I know is that there was definitely an age correlation - younger voters tended to go for Hillary, older for Trump.) I also found that reference to "make a donation to make up for it" kind of weird. I think I understand what he's getting at, but it was definitely awkwardly phrased.

If I could duplicate based only on the ingredient list, anyone could easily copy any packaged food. Amounts matter. I'm hoping someone knows of a recipe that would come close. We've been buying the fox point in the 2 cup jars so that gives an idea of how much of it we go through. It's really expensive so making my own would save some money too.

It's not that complicated, you just like salt, pepper and shallots (mix of onions and garlic)in all your foods. I pretty much do that already,. Just season and taste. Add some chives if that makes a noticeable difference or its just for color.
