Every night at dinner we talk about our daily strength and struggle...the best part of our day and something we would like to work on or wish were better. I thought it might be fun to do the same here...thanksgiving edition! High: I was super excited to get to snuggle this little sweetie...only 2 weeks old!  My struggle: I have a cousin who is a hot mess that we don't really talk too much because it's just always something. She's got an adult son who came to dinner with his girlfriend and they fought the WHOLE time. Like telling at each other to the point where my dh took him outside on my aunt's porch for a 'what the actual eff, shape up' chat and when we left my kids were like 'what the heck was that???' So awkward. I couldn't help but laugh though, my favorite quote of their fights? "Why are you lying? You can't even lie through your teeth, you don't have any!" Hoping to jeebus they break up before Christmas, because I'm sure they will show up for gifts. I think we might take a little trip over the holiday if they're still together. I can't listen to that again. Yay, family! Ha |

We had a really peaceful, immediate family dinner that turned out great (if I don't mind saying so myself). The best part… I won't cook again until Monday.

Highs...the food was great with lots of leftovers, we spent wonderful time with our daughter and her family and after spending 39 Thanksgivings together my husband actually offered to go Black Friday shopping with me for the first time! I am super excited about that.
Lows...our great grandbaby was sick last weekend, then I got sick, then his mama got sick and then he got sick again. So they didn't make it to dinner, but my husband and I took them lots of goodies.
BTW: they are both feeling better tonight.

The best part for me was passing out and having a wonderful nap after we ate from all the tryptophan (in the turkey). The worst part was that I made ham, not turkey.  Cute little baby in your photo, Steph. |

Highs- Dh's turkey turned out really good. He was quite pleased with himself! We had his sister over. As well as his cousins but she came an hour early. I was very uncomfortable with it.But I went with anyway. We've had a very turbilent rocky relationship since their mom died last year. This is actually the first time i"ve seen her since the funeral. She was pleasant. I was pleasant. (swearing under my breath and rolling my eyes in my head) but I was pleasant and but my best game day face for Dh. She suprisingly was pleasant and not overly obnixious like usual.
Lows non really except that every muscle in our bodies hurt. And my dog is still recovering from lyme disease and not walking. But Dh's cousin who stays with the dogs when we're out of town stayed after everyone left so he could see Duke and Pia. (since we keep them in the back room while we had dinner and every body over.) They both loved that but especially Duke. It really perked him up. He had a rough night last night but he's doing better. It's just been really hard. He wanted to sit and wanted his cousin to rub his belly. He hasn't wanted to do that. Thanksgiving was good sidetracktion for everybody.

High: it was a small dinner with just DH, sister, and 3 nieces. So much laughter and fun. The smoked turkey was fantastic!
Low: DH put too much cream in the duchess potatoes and they deflated while they baked. They were delicious though. Crispy on the outside, cheesy creamy on the inside. The last time we made them they were beautiful, tall and honeycomb shaped.

The high was spending time with my mom and my DD. DH played a game most of the day and Mom napped a bit, but DD stayed downstairs with me and acted as souls chef and dishwasher when I needed a break.
The low was that the turkey wasn't completely thawed. I hadn't gotten to the grocery store as early as I'd hoped and I hadn't gotten the turkey in the soak as early as I should have. I had good intentions, but when DD said let's go do whatever, I went! When I realized the turkey was still frozen, I asked did they want Chinese or Italian!
LOL. No one was upset with me, which was a good thing. We put everything away and DH went and got Chinese. We'll have Thanksgiving tomorrow and it'll be good.

High-- celebrating Thanksgiving with my new sister-in-law – her very first American Thanksgiving (she's from New Zealand).
Low-- being on the verge of winning Munchkin, only to get hit with several curses in a row and a particularly deadly monster – and losing (spectacularly) to my stupid brother…

Highs: my aunt who had a heart attack and angioplasty several weeks ago, and then more stints put in with another angioplasty on Tuesday seemed to be doing well. My uncle is using a walker but seemed better than he had been; getting out of a chair is difficult but other than that he was moving decently. My mom, who is 87, is also using a walker; it was at her house, but my brother who lives next door and I took care of pretty much everything so she just had to sit in a chair and give some directions. A bunch of my cousins were there and everyone gets along. We saw pictures of the newest baby, born Nov. 4 and are looking forward to Christmas when we will get to meet him in person. The food was great and we had plenty of it, so we have leftovers in the fridge.
Lows: my sister-in-law has been feeling sick for three weeks and was diagnosed yesterday with two ulcers in her stomach. She never came over from next door, which was okay since she said she still wasn't feeling well, but she was giving my brother some grief because he was busy making mashed potatoes and the dressing and putting the turkey in at my mom's and wasn't "spending any time" with her. She's got a bunch of issues anyway but it was adding to the stress for my brother.

Highs- my divorced outlaws both came with their respective spouses and there was no drama, I got to see my pregnant sister and my parents and family that I love, my DD played nicely with my cousins DD.
Low- I had a panic attack and started shaking. Went and threw up and everything was fine again,

High sleeping through that Fantastic Beast movie.
Low having to do all the work by myself. Everything, all the cooking, setting the table, clean up, dishes. As my DH's family all sat in my living room chatting, and laughing and having a great time. I will NEVER invite them over for a holiday again.

azredhead ....ohhh, I hope your precious doggie gets better soon!  And sooo happy he had such a pawsome time today!  @peasville .....  Aww, don't feel bad....I totallllly need a sippie cup, too! I am sooo clumsy, it is SO annoying !!! StephDRebel .....ohhh, that SWEET, smooshy newborn!! I can't !! And thank you for making me LOL (the tooth part of your story!)  HIGHS---1. Watching Macy's parade and making some verrrry snarky comments with my fun brother and hubbs. My brother is VERY funny and can get me laughing even when I'm in the worst pain! 2. Watching the Westminter Dog Show---!! So fun! And even MORE fun to watch our three doggies' reactions to the show!! One of the hosts---John O'Hurley? (the one who played Elaine's boss on "Seinfeld") ----We didn't notice in previous years that he makes some very cute/ funny little comments...hee hee....we only wish he made MORE ! For example, when the CUTE basset hound was walking, he said something like "yes, I'm sexy, I know I'm sexy!" ...... (sidebar---watching that made us want to watch the pawsomely funny movie "Best In Show" ) 3. Being able to cook and bake ---which I LOVE to do----but some days, it's VERY hard with chronic to acute pain issues. My pain levels were horrendous on Monday, Tue, and Weds; so I had my doubts about today. Not that DH and brother wouldn't have cooked----but I ENJOY it and WANTED to. The Good Lord gave me an almost pain-free day today, I am SO thankful!!!!!! 4. The next best thing to being with our families/ friends, I am extra thankful for seeing lots of piks and videos of them on Facebook, reading about the peas' Thanksgivings, and had a BLAST learning wayyyy more interesting trivia about my fave movie " Planes, Trains, and Automobiles !!!  5. My brother making me laugh all. day. long, annnd such a FUN idea that we're going to have a trivia contest about said movie, with PRIZES. LOWS--- (more like semi-lows)
I hate to even call these "LOWS", because I am really blessed and thinking of all
the people out there who have very serious, horrible things going on in their lives!
1. Although SO happy to have my brother visiting, I missed alllll of DH's and my extended families! I am VERY close to our nieces and nephews, plus, we have one great- niece. On the other hand, I am SO happy that my sweet Dad lives near all of them and is a healthy, independent 85-year-old! I miss Dad a lot, but he'lll be visiting us soon One VERY LOW thing is that with my myriad of medical issues, we can't do our usual, FUN road trip to be with both sides of our families for Christmas. We have NEVER missed going there for Christmas, and honestly, I'm still in almost a weird disbelief about it. And not only our precious families, but not getting to see one of my bestest friends in the world is also sad. But---here's the HIGH------she and her awesome hubbs and 2 sweet daughters might fly here to see us! They were already talking about a visit, but now that I told them I may have my hip replaced soon, they're MORE eager to come So sweet, eh? She and her sweet hubbs are also both RNs....they said "We will fly to you and be your personal nurses" Between them and their two preciousss daughters---WOW, it'll be soooo great to see them !!!!!! 2. Not being able to take a lovelyyyy, long walk with "da pupps" after dinner among the gorgeous orange, yellow, and red trees ---AND the weather was just gorgeous!!! But I WILL be able to once I get this $*(&#+ LEFT hip replaced, plus the RIGHT foot surgery I need ---GAH !!  3. This is just a silly one......(awww....poor me---get out your tiny violins !) I was sooo looking forward to our millionth viewing of "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles", but after our lovely dinner and DH & brother watching so. much. football. , we didn't end up watching it. But no biggie----definitely tomorrow !!

My day was pretty darn good all the way around. The best part? The older boy came home without telling me. He came in on Wednesday and spent the night at his dad's (along with my youngest.) Silly boy kept it a complete secret from me, even texting me like he was still in Louisiana. I haven't seen him since last Christmas and was feeling all maudlin yesterday morning worry about him being alone on the holiday. The younger boy volunteered to pick up me up and drive over to my mom's. He rolled up in the yard and I glanced out the window only to see another person get out of his truck. I couldn't see who it was but figured he had picked up a stray for the day. As I walked out the door to greet him, I realized it was my older son and I swear I burst into tears and couldn't stop hugging him for five minutes. I was a big puddle of mama love.  The rest of the day was pretty darn good too. Lots of family, lots of laughing. After dinner while everyone was lolling about in a turkey coma, we ended up watching a family favorite 'Young Frankenstein.' We pretty much can quote it chapter and verse and you would randomly hear people in other parts of the house shouting out along with the movie. Not sure if there was a low. I had both boys there, other family, I ate enough to feed a small family, I have enough leftovers to make me happy... |

High-having everyone together is always a happy-maker for me. Two kids, three grand babies, my brother (who had been estranged for years) and a dear friend. And a politics-free zone all day.
Low-one of twin grandsons screams and cries about everything - a real drama queen. That's especially hard to take with a house full of people. I hope this improves by the time he's 18...

Ooooh...Steph! That baby is the cutest!
I'll start with my lows...We live about 3 hours away from family. I was looking so forward to seeing everyone. I try to go back home at least once a month, but my sciatic nerves can't take being in the car that long most of the time. So the last time I was home was the beginning of October. Then what happens...I start feeling sick on Tuesday. Wednesday comes, and my throat is scratchy, my nose is runny and my entire body aches! We have little ones in the family and I sure didn't want to pass on any germs to them. So I stayed here.  My boys did go up north on their own so at least my own family was represented.
The highs...I had a nice quiet dinner. Went to the local Price Chopper and bought turkey slices and pre-made gravy. It wasn't bad. I already had most of the ingredients I needed on hand. So I made a hot turkey sandwich, mashed potatoes, corn, cranberries, deviled eggs and macaroni salad. Only thing missing was dressing. Oh, I also bought a half an apple pie and vanilla ice cream. So I had a good meal...just me and my cat! LOL!
I also caught up on a lot of shows, watched about 5 Christmas movies, and made some real progress on the afghan I'm crocheting for my sister! So I was lonely, but I made do and it's all good. My boys will be home tomorrow, so enjoying the peace and quiet right now!  |

High: I got the house decorated for Christmas.
Low: DD had to work. She is a waitress, so we are planning on our Thanksgiving for this Saturday. By the time she had gotten home at 7:30 she was exhausted. She didn't get a break or lunch so she was starving. A customer yelled at her and she was crying. Then she counted her tips and felt a little better. Lol!

DD invited her best friend over (her parents traveled to Germany for the holiday and she didn't want to stay w/ gramma for Thanksgiving). My step-son came over AND I think we may have finally gotten a contractor to remodel several parts of our home that is in DESPERATE need! Lows: While "sneaking" some extra turkey from the pan, I got grease on my shirt. Boo! Another shirt bites the dust! |

High...being with our oldest daughter who cooked a great meal...seeing our two grandkids there and and my daughters landlord was there...nice man
low was my son in law ...he is staying at the landlords house...I think the marriage may be soon coming to an end...I really liked Kevin but he does have issues and won't see a doctor...
The kind of low for me...having this cancer out Weds...so want it over...
finding out my sisters oldest daughter had a aortic aneurysm last week, she is home now, I just found this out yesterday morning...my husbands niece a few weeks back ,she is only in her 40's had a brain aneurysm and is very slowly recovering... been a rough couple of months here...but we are survivors...

Highs - I only cook one meal a year and I was proud that everything came out well. My mom and brother drove down and my son had a friend over. No one fought and there were no awkward moments. In my family that is a gift in itself
Lows - I didn't get a much needed nap! We also have very few of the good leftovers to enjoy today.
I am totally editing the lows on my post: Thanksgiving Sat my mother decides that I'm hiding the fact that son's girlfriend lives with us, which she doesn't, so when I tell her not to concern herself (in a nice way) she gets up and leaves without a fare thee well. Then Sunday my husband and son get into an actual fight over absolutely nothing, totally initiated by my husband. At least we made it through the actual Thanksgiving day. |

I'll start with the low...I was cooking like crazy and DS didn't get out of bed until 11:45. DD came over and was on the couch reading the Black Friday ads from the newspaper. I texted my BFF that the shit was going to hit the fan. I got them into the kitchen and it was all good from there. I even made my grandkids help with the dishes. It was a great day. I am blessed that our son and his children traveled here for the holiday. DH is recovering nicely from his latest medical drama. My single BIL came, too, and was a lot of fun. We played games after dinner and watched Christmas Vacation. |

High--My brother-in-law's gratitude when I tackled the post-dinner piles of dishes. He's on permanent disability with a back issue and doesn't have a dishwasher. He said it would have taken him a week to do the dishes.
Low--I know everyone in my extended family voted for Trump and I've been having a REALLY hard time--it's been like mourning--comparable to other losses through actual deaths I've experienced. I phoned my father two days ago to wish him and my stepmother happy Thanksgiving, giving the reason that we were going to be having the meal at my brother-in-law's. The actual day, I texted my nephew's wife, whom I adore, wishing her happy Thanksgiving and asking her to convey my wishes to other family members, including my brother and SIL, and nephew, because things were tense between us politically before the election. I didn't trust myself to remain neutral if anyone said anything to try to provoke me.
Later, on Facebook, my nephew's wife was in a photo non-ironically wearing a Chinese-made "Make America Great" red hat. So now I have one more person to mourn...

High: We're with my husband's family in Ohio, had an absolutely fantastic Turkey Day. We also opened Christmas presents as is our tradition, since we can't manage to all get together for Christmas.
Low: Found out that my niece will be having a field hockey tournament every Thanksgiving from next year till...2022, I guess? So this could very well be our last Thanksgiving all together. I'm kind of having a hard time with it. And I'm in postmenstrual cycle tears and general depression too. It just hits me every so often. But we'll all have fun together today.

Low: missing my Phoebe (of course)
Stupid non-relevant low-that my mom has to wake up at the butt crack of dawn every time she visits us and start doing idiotic and loud "cleaning." I have been working a ton of hours (teaching) and wake up today at 6am to hear her moving trash around, cutting plastic containers open so more would fit in the trash can, etc. My son has a trash can in his room where she is staying and she decided that it needed to be emptied at 6am. Our kitchen trash cans were relatively full after cooking all day hence cutting pieces up and shoving them in. She ALWAYS does this when she stays here. Yesterday during the day she laid in his bed eating all of our pita chips. The night before Thanksgiving she left spinach dip that was supposed to be an appetizer the next day out and the dog ate it. But suddenly 6am when the house is totally quiet is the right time to "clean."
She is one of the worst house guests ever and then will act put out that I get pissed off. She always talks about how busy we are and how we have to go go go for my son's activities. I just wanted one freaking day to sleep in!!!!

High: Played a new game and got in two rounds of Euchre with my boys and my brother. Plus, all food turned out well and everyone enjoyed the meal.
Low: a couple of family members were missing this year - had to be at other side of the family. Missed them.

I had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
The highs were that both of my boys were here, along with DIL, DS, DN and her two young sons. The food turned out wonderful. My DN's one year old woke up from a nap and then wanted me to hold him, where he promptly fell back asleep. Everyone contributed food, including my DIL and both DSs.
The lows, we didn't get started until after 5 because my sister had to work. That made for a short visit. It's all good though, the family Christmas party is next weekend and I will see them all again then.
Almost forgot, my niece's 3 year old "won" a package of Post It Notes during on of our games. Before he left he had his mom write things on them like "bedroom door" and "lamp" so my house was peppered with blue notes on everything. We had to take photos of that, I just wish we had taken a photo of him with the plethora of notes he left.
