Back in mid October (Columbus Day weekend) I helped out at Special Olympics. I was on my feet from about 4pm until 10:30pm. I had on sneakers, so pretty sensible shoes. The next day we went to Six Flags and again I was on my feet for several hours. Actually, we sat for about 1.5hrs waiting on the girls. I again wore my sneakers. The next day, my feet were really sore. But I wasn't surprised. However, the pain has continued in one spot on my heel. It hurts the most after I wake up and get out of bed to walk on it. Goes away some and is sore a bit throughout the day. Doesn't really matter what shoes I wear. I don't wear heels. I wear my boots (all of them have a low heel), my uggish type boots or my sneakers. Any ideas?
Totally unrelated, on my other foot, right below my ankle, it feels like my skin is rubbed raw. Been that way for several weeks. There isn't a rash or anything that I can feel that makes it feel this way. Honestly, it feels like my leg did when I had shingles 12 years ago. But it's only in that one spot on my ankle.

Maybe the spot under your heel is plantar fasciitis. I had that a couple of years ago. I had to take NSAIDs and do tendon stretching with my toes on a block and my heels up and down.

Huh. Didn't think of that. I'll look into that.

Hurts most in the morning and then feels better as you move is a pretty classic plantar fasciitis sign. A stretch you can do is just when you're in bed (on your back), flex your foot and toes back toward your knees.
Another possibility is a bone spur, but you would need an x-ray to see that.

Another vote for plantar fasciitis. The special stretches worked for me.

Husband fought plantar fasciitis for several months. Your symptoms are classic. A few things he did that helped were to freeze a water bottle and then roll it with his foot, stretching exercises and taping the foot (you tube it). He also ordered a heel insert from Amazon that worked well in his workboots. My physical therapist sister also had him purchase what looks like a plastic rolling pin (I think from Big 5?) and roll it on his calves to stretch out the calf muscles. He was skeptical that this would do anything since the pain was in his foot, not his calf, but she was right... somehow it helps.

Another vote for plantar fasciitis. I would go and get it checked and get started on some exercises. Otherwise, it can linger.

I agree that it sounds like plantar facitis; OR, what I have--- which is horrrribly painful sometimes!!! Although you didn't say WHICH part of your heel hurts, google "Haglund's Deformity". My awesome physical therapist has helped me a LOT; but unfortunately, I'm at the point of surgery being mandatory! Hope you get some relief soon!

Excellent advice above.
My one question: do you have diabetes? I ask because it can cause changes in sensation in the feet (the "rubbed raw" feeling you mention). If not, then I'd say it's probably something rubbing on a nerve, e.g. an inflamed tendon. I wouldn't worry about it unless it's really painful or bothersome. But definitely take the advice on self-care for plantar fasciitis.

I had surgery on both of my heels within the past 15 months. I assumed it was plantar faciitis for the longest time. When I went to a podiatrist on the first heel that had it, I found out it was Haglund's Deformity. I had never even heard of that! The doctor told me that on a scale from 1-10, mine was at least a 9 1/2. Ugh. With that being said - please go get it checked out. Don't assume it's plantar faciitis, like I did

Definitely have it checked into. I have plantar faciitis. I have had it for years. Things I do to keep it under control are never, ever going barefoot, taking an anti-inflammatory, having orthotics made, and only wearing certain shoes (Alegria, Dansko, and Croc Athens around the house). I also do exercises and use a frozen water bottle if I feel it getting bad but thankfully that hasn't been in about 10 months.

It's on the bottom part of my heel. Sort of on the edge of it and towards where my heel goes into my arch. I am sorry you are going to have to have surgery. Save Excellent advice above. I do agree with the planter fascitis posted here after reading that info. Will be looking into the self therapy options.

To the OP: I feel your pain, literally. Mine feels a little better if I don't work out or walk too much, but the minute I go back to my normal activities it comes back.

I'm interested in rolling pin too. I have bone spurs and must keep up with stretches. I'd like something I can use more discreetly when needed.

Where you describe your pain is exactly where my doctor diagnosed PF is. It really sounds like it.

The roller may be one of these. My DD is a long distance runner and uses this on her calf muscles when they are tight. calf muscle rollerI also have plantar fasciitis and I also think that is what the OP has. Tight calf muscles can make it worse, so yes, this would help.

Yes, that looks like what he has. He got his at Big 5 Sporting Goods store and it is navy blue and aqua. Works really well.
