This is just a vent but I bought 8 lbs of strawberries yesterday afternoon at the grocery store to make jam to can. I've never canned anything before so my husband's Aunt was going to help me. So this morning I woke up to 5 of the containers (1 lb each) completely moldy! Yuck. I figured the strawberries would be OK sitting in my kitchen overnight, but I guess I was wrong. I found my receipt and have already talked to the store and they will refund me for the mold strawberries, but it's just the point that they should have lasted longer than just overnight, and now I have to go back to the store (20 miles away) before I can make my jam

Yeah sometimes it seems like they go bad crazy fast. Glad they are at least refunding your $$$.

That is ridiculously fast but I always refrigerate strawberries which slows it down to a degree.

If you soak them in vinegar water for a few minutes then lay them on paper towels to dry, they will keep a lot longer. Vinegar kills any spores that may be on the berries. Then keep them in the fridge.

That stinks. Strawberries are so finicky, that I find I pass over them often.

Then keep them in the fridge. That's interesting-I'm going to try that. The last batch of strawberries I purchased from Harris Teeter were gross after two days, and I kept them in the fridge. I should have taken them back to the store but didn't.

Wow,that's awfully fast. I miss the old days when you could pick your own strawberries, cherries, etc instead of buying them in bags or containers.
Glad they are going to refund your money.

I've never tried the vinegar water thing, but I've heard it works very well. It would probably behoove you to try it if you're making jam, anyway, just as an extra precaution against contamination.

Will the vinegar have any residual effects on my jam. I've never made jam and don't want to mess it up (I also don't want to ruin my jam with moldy berries).

I know I should have refrigerated them, but I didn't have room for 8 lbs in there.

No, it is just a teensy amount, and it is an acid anyway. If you're worried, rinse them off before you make the jam.

Glass jars? Would plastic work? I have some plastic storage jars that would be the right size. We keep berries in the fridge but they do get sad looking quickly.

I've never tried the vinegar thing either! Good to know.
I bought plastic containers from Costco a couple of years ago that have silver inside the plastic. It said the silver retards bacteria growth and keeps your food fresh longer. I also bought strawberries that day. I washed up the containers and put a few berries in the new container and few into a regular plastic container. Both had those snap on tab lids. I could not believe how long those in the new container lasted! The berries in the old container started to get mold within 3 days. The new container didn't look a day older. I left them there just to see how long they would be edible. I was really impressed to see they lasted over 2 weeks without showing any signs of mold or decay.
I just had some fresh berries on my oatmeal this morning that I bought about a week and a half ago at Costco. I love those containers. They were still firm and fresh. I haven't read up on whether or not I'm going to get some creepy disorder from using them. I'm just happy to know I'm not waisting money by buying the big sized fruit containers at Costco. I can actually buy three different kinds of fruit for just me and it will remain edible until gone. I think the containers were called Oh So Fresh or something like that. Absolutely worth it.

I hate when that happens and I like grocery shopping. It just chaps my hide to have to shop for something twice.

They have u-pick strawberry farms here and that's what we usually get. I keep them refrigerated or frozen though. They do seem to go moldy fast from the store.

We got 4 quarts of strawberries in the CSA share today. DH and I have already eaten one. I just put the rest in the fridge unwashed. I doubt they'll last more than a couple days. They are sooooooo good. The local ones are much more fragile than the ones from the supermarket, but they're really tasty.

I remember once picking two crates of strawberries. The next day I went to make jelly and most of them were unusable. BLEAH. I freeze right away now. Lucky the store will refund you!

I do the vinegar rinse and it works really well, especially if I store them in a Tupperware or Rubbermaid produce container.

Vinegar works like a charm. Each week I buy a couple of containers of strawberries, dump them in a the sink filled with water and vinegar (I never measure how much, guessing for a sink full of water I use about 1/3 cup vinegar. I soak them while I unpack the rest of the groceries. Doing it this way, the berries last at least 5 days in the fridge

And you don't have to rinse them afterward, the vinegar evaporates.

Thanks for the vinegar tip.. I rinsed what is left of my strawberries in water and vinegar and they are in the fridge waiting until I get to the store tomorrow so I can work on my jam. I will definitely be using this tip in the future as I have thrown away many strawberries over the years!

I've never heard about rinsing strawberries in vinegar. That's a good tip, I'll have to try it.
