My husband and I went to the beach today, La Jolla Shores if you're familiar with the San Diego area. Anyway - we always bring our camping stove so we can grill hot dogs for lunch. You have to stay on the grassy area behind the boardwalk/sand if you want to use your grill. We scoped out a spot away from the many, many large parties and laid down our towels to relax. While we were firing up the grill for lunch the ice cream man drove by. Tons of kids from one particular party came running through our little area and trampled all over our towels and clothes! Granted they are just grungy beach clothes but come on! Of course none of the parents said anything to their kids... So we decided to just ignore if, until they all came back running from the ice cream man and back onto our towels! At that point my husband asked them to stop running all over our stuff and one of the boys apologized. Well some time goes on and it is clear the parents don't have a clue about beach ettiquette either because two of the moms came barging through our spot to go across the street to smoke a cigarette! There was more than enough room in front of our towels to walk by without disturbing anyone, but behind us there was a big bush and tree so there was limited space. I was just shocked that people were so brazen about walking through other parties areas! Other than that we had a lovely day . Thanks for letting me vent!

OK, that's just crappy! I know it's not the end of the world or anything, but I'd be steaming. Some people have no couth!

Next time bring a spray bottle with you! You can put it on mist to cool yourself down and turn the nozzle to 'stream' when people are rude and inconsiderate!

I would be pea-livid, too. I hate confrontation but would be tempted to say something to the adults.

That is really rude. If I had a few second's warning that they were heading for me, I'd stand and put my arms out and tell them to stop running and walk around my spot. Most kids, I find, don't mean harm, they're just excited and unschooled in the right way to behave and I blame the parents. If my son was heading to the ice cream man and looked like he was going to cross your area, I'd be yelling out at him to go around you and not step in your space. The adults have no excuse. Stepping on your towels? Ugh. I guess you could stand up and ward them off too. Or, upon their return, wait for them to go to their spots and then go walk all over their towels to make a point. Yeah, yeah, two wrongs don't make a right. But I would have felt better. And there is a slight chance they would get it. Or I could get punched, depending on the size of their group.

It was enough to tick me off especially because the boys were a least 8 or 9, so old enough to know better. But I was even more shocked by the parents behavior! No wonder the kids didn't have a clue...

How hilarious is it that I have a spray bottle with a good stream for when my cat jumps on the dining room table? It is getting packed up into the beach gear next time!

My husband is a lot more willing to say something than I am, he actually loudly said "Excuse me!" While the ladies walked through, on their way back they seemed to get a clue and walked around.

That happened to us last year when watching the fireworks. No ice cream trucks, but stepping all over someone else's blankets when there is plenty of room to walk around is just crappy. Then you have the nerve to set up your blanket ON TOP of ours??? Sigh... at least we weren't dealing with sad and wet kids like you guys were. Hope you enjoyed the beach anyway.

I have long legs so I stretched out as far as possible to make it clear we didn't want people just stomping through. I was more than understanding of the little guy who apologized, he was genuine and coralled his friends away. I'm not usually one to say something to another person's child but it was clear the parents just didn't care.

I'd like to think I'd speak up to the adults. The kids, no, they can't help poor parenting but there's no excuse for adults being that disrespectful!

I feel like kids here in San Diego have almost no manners, my neighbors kids were always riding their bikes over the lawn of the person who lives on the corner...my dh always used to say "my mom would have had my hide if I tried that" they would also run through peoples yards when the ice cream man came. Personally I find the whole ice cream truck thing creepy, it plays this annoying music and then says hello....its like the beginning of some sort of child abduction horror movie. Sorry kids stepped on your stuff, that sucks!

Grom Pea, I actually assumed they were from out of town because I know from growing up here the first rule of the beach is to not walk on other peoples towels!! My father was a beach lifeguard here while he was in college so we were always told how to respect the beach and others attending.

Ack. There is a beach etiquette, but dang if not everyone knows it or bothers to follow it. Don't shake out your towels upwind of people, step away as much as possible and gently shake downwards. Don't walk over people's stuff/area. It is just rude. And for Pete's sake, don't set up your chairs directly in front of someone that got there early enough to stake out a place that doesn't have someone in front of them so that they have a direct view of the water. (The exception of course being if that person has set up 15 feet back, but still-don't plop your chairs directly in front of them.) I am a life long beach goer and get a little first world annoyed when people don't consider the people around them.

That's incredibly rude. I hate when people walk too close to my set up on the beach because just walking kicks sand onto your stuff.
BTW...can we still be Pea Livid over here or do we need to think of some other intense level of anger since the NSBR was so rudely yanked out from under us?

That would make me mad! My husband and I would have been saying something as soon as it happened. Our kids would be in so much trouble if they did that! What's going to happen to these bratty kids when they become adults? When no one even bothered to teach them manners as kids. Many parents just don't care about their kids it seems. Sorry this happened. I can't stand when people ruin a beach day.

That would have ticked me off too. There have been times where I was temped to put police tape around our area because people are so rude. My kids learned beach etiquette the first time we went to a beach.

I agree with anxiousmom and add, Please don't feed seagulls near me. I don't like feeling like they are dive bombing me and the kids and don't want to worry about them snatching at the kids snacks or worse, pooping on someone.

Good point, although I very those neighbor kids I used to have would have run right through your towels and let their dog poop right next to you without picking it up...thank goodness they moved they were an awful family, from the kids to the parents, who had a mariachi band and would play at full volume all the time. Dh thinks that's why the original owners sold us the house, lol.
