Thing. Born and raised in California. If the argument is that it makes more sense as "think" wouldn't it actually be "you have another THOUGHT coming?" Grammatically, yes, it would be another thought. But this is a non grammatical colloquialism that doesn't follow the rules of grammar. Trying to force proper grammar on the formula is why people think it has to be "thing" without following the logic of the sentence. There was no first thing so how can there be another thing? However there was a first think so there can be another think (logic, not proper grammar) I live in Hawaii and I use think. I agree with Voltagain.

The original word is "think," but it was bastardized and now "thing" has become common in speech, too. But it doesn't make as much sense when you break it out like someone drew it out for me:
It's think because right there in the set up, this phrase uses "think" as the verb, so the noun version becomes the play on words. "Thing" doesn't refer to any other word in the phrase -- i.e., fill in "credit" or "work" as your thing and it doesn't make sense. The saying is about repetition, so you have to repeat a word!

Definitely "think" for me. I've actually never heard anyone use "thing." West coaster here and have never heard it as thing.
I can still hear my mother saying ......"you've got another think coming young lady" when I thought I was going to get or do something that was NOT going to happen.

Well now. I was brought up with 'thing'. Had never heard of the 'think' version until someone mentioned it on the pet peeve thread. I've done a bit of reading. Both versions are widely used. The first recorded instance of each was in the very early 20th century, which likely means that both have been in use since well before that, so over a hundred years in both cases. 'Think' was the earlier of the 2, but not by enough of a margin to conclude definitively that it was the original phrase. Linguistically it does seem most likely that 'think' was the original, and was corrupted into 'thing'. Clearly enunciating the two consecutive 'k' sounds in 'think coming' requires conscious effort: in casual or rapid speech they will naturally run together, and the phrase then sounds almost if not identical to and could so be misheard as 'thing coming'. OTOH, it's very unlikely that someone unfamiliar with the phrase could mishear 'thing coming' as 'think coming' so the corruption is unlikely to have happened that way round. (Little test here: if you use 'think', ask your kids - if you have them - what the phrase is. Don't be too horrified if one or two of you have kids who think it is 'thing'!) Because they sound so similar, once you know one version, even though you may think you've never heard the other version, that might not be the case. They're close enough that your brain can subconsciously rationalise the difference so you 'hear' what you're expecting to hear, even if that's not what was actually said. Case in point, I thought I'd only ever heard 'thing' but I discovered that 'think' was used in Downton Abbey. I've watched every episode of that, and never noticed... As far as the logic goes, both versions make sense. Grammatically too as it happens - think is a noun as well as a verb. The first thing in the 'thing' version is the thing the listener thinks. The second thing is the other thing that will actually happen. That said, using 'first' and 'second' is misleading, as it implies they are sequential, which they're not. 'Another' in this context is being used synonymously with 'different' so: "If you think this thing is going to happen, you've got another (different) thing coming (than the one you expect)" The two versions mean essentially the same, but there are subtle differences in how they're used: - Think: if you think thing is going to happen/is true, you need to think again
- Thing: if you think thing is going to happen/is true, that thing ain't happening/true
But ultimate intention of both: if you think thing is going to happen/is true, you're wrong. I still prefer 'thing': besides the fact that 'think' sounds distinctly unnatural to my ear, and although I can appreciate the word play, it seems to allow the possibility of reaching the same conclusion as before after thinking again. If I ever use the phrase, I mean "if you think this thing, it doesn't matter what you think, that thing is not happening". Bottom line IMO: both are valid, it's pretty much impossible to be sure which is the original but after a century of use of both I'm loath to describe either as wrong. Anyone familiar with the phrase will understand someone who uses the other version (in intention if not precise interpretation), and is only likely to notice the difference in written form. Or you could read 44 pages of all those arguments and more: you're welcome.

Do any of the 'thing' users have the context of a statment in which they use it? It would be like: "Oh, she thinks she's going to take credit for all my hard work?! Well, she's got another thing coming!" This is how we use it here on the East Coast. I've never heard it any other way.

It would be like: "Oh, she thinks she's going to take credit for all my hard work?! Well, she's got another thing coming!" But then using "thing" doesn't make sense in this context; "another think coming" would be the follow up to the initial "she thinks." To me, you'd have to say "Oh, she things she's going to take credit for all my hard work?! Well, she's got another thing coming!" which doesn't make sense at all... and is why I beleive the correct usage is "think." See? lol That makes sense. I say thing, but I imagine that it started out as thing, was quoted incorrectly as thing, and the phrase changed in some areas. I love language quirks!

Surely it's more likely to have started out as 'think', just because of the context it's used in, and then in some areas changed to 'thing'.

I've never heard or read "think" until this thread. My thought on it is if someone already thinks they're right, why would they THINK again until someTHING COMES along and proves them wrong, causing them to think again.

Dh and I both have heard it as 'thing coming' I grew up in Australia, dh is from the Midwest, near Chicago.
The context I always believed it to be was the 'thing' being an unexpected happening or surprise result.

Thing. IMO, think makes absolutely no sense. I hear it like, "If you think that's the way it is, you've got another thing coming." Meaning you're not going to get what you think you're going to out of that situation. Basically what you're going to get (the THING) is something different than you expect. ETA: I'm from the Midwest.

I've always thought it was a veiled threat, So the 'thing' coming would be consequences.
