Thanks to everyone for your help.
I made a 2 page list of all the beaches you liked and looked up the milage from dd house from each of them. Folly Beach is only 4 hours away and I rented a house on the beach for 12 there. I'm so excited! This trip will be our 50th anniversary celebration.

It could be cool in April, but there are many NC beaches to love. Emerald Isle is my favorite - great family beach.
What are you looking for - small group or large group; lots of activity or sitting back and relaxing?

I currently live in Nags Head but I prefer the southern beaches near Wilimington. Bald Head Island is my fave.

I went to Wilmington last August and had a lovely time. The beach was fantastic.

What are you looking for - small group or large group; lots of activity or sitting back and relaxing? Family project ..8-10 people.( 6 kids:18-11). The kids usually mostly do their own thing while adults hang out and wait for them and try to keep their bellies full. We would do some sightseeing, and would not expect ocean to be warm. Would like a house.2-3 days.

I love the area around Charleston SC. Beaches are gorgeous and there is a ton of stuff to do in South Carolina.
I like Kiwah Island.

While not a beach person, I'd recommend Carolina Beach, NC. (If you decide to expand your search to include SC, please consider Kiawah Island.) Hope you & your family have a safe & fun trip!

Thanks everyone. Looking at all of them. South Carolina is not a longer trip I was happy to discover. And we've never been to Charleston.

I love Hilton Head, SC but for my 60th bday in the spring we are going to Kitty Hawk. I think Corolla is lovely. Nags Head is a great beach.

Check out Holden Beach, NC. Great beach for walking, even at high tide. lots of really nice, ocean front houses to rent at very reasonable prices.

Check out Wrightsville Beach NC. We have serval others within a 30-40 minute drive...carolina, kure, brunswick, topsail, southport the list goes on and on. We have a quirky downtown, plenty of resturants, activities, historic homes, aquaruim and some of the best doughnut shops(yep had to be said)....check them out Wake n Bake.

I've been to beaches up and down the Atlantic Coast. I think the Charleston area (and particularly Kiawah) is hard to beat. We'd retire to Kiawah if we could afford it.
That being said, we also love Hatteras Island and the beaches in the national seashore. They are remote, not crowded and pristine. That also means less amenities and activities so that may be a deal breaker for some people.
Myrtle Beach is fine for what it is - an urban area along the coast with thousands of rental units crammed into a small swath along the coast. Many people prefer this type of beach experience - condos with lazy rivers and indoor pools, hundreds of restaurant choices, lots of entertainment and activity options, lots of shopping, lots of golf.
If you're looking for a happy medium, Hilton Head is a good option. Lots of restaurants, activities and shopping with a more thoughtfully laid out coastal community. Hilton Head is great for biking.

Thanks. Urban is not what we want. We've been to HH and it was too urban for us.

Then you definitely don't want Myrtle Beach!
ETA: Isle of Palms, Sullivan's Island, Folly Beach and Seabrook are all beach areas near Charleston that have less cost prohibitive options than Kiawah. Unfortunately, you can't access Kiawah's beaches at all unless you are staying on the island. I think that may also be the case with Seabrook.

We want to go in April. Looking at houses to rent and it seems they are cheaper and more plentiful in Myrtle Beach. I don't think anyone recommended it. Any reasons for that? I would avoid Myrtle Beach proper. It's more congested, lots of high rises and hotels, and not as family friendly (IMHO). I haven't stayed there in years, but that's the general consensus about that area. In NC you might like Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, Topsail Beach, Emerald Isle, Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, Holden Beach, Oak Island, Bald Head Island. In SC, you might like North Myrtle Beach/Briarcliffe area Beaches, or south of Myrtle Beach (the city), the more family oriented beaches are Surfside Beach, Garden City, Pawleys Island, Litchfield Beach. Debordieu (pronounced Debby-do) is very very nice but expensive. Some villas/condos, mostly homes, many for rent - very quiet and laid back. Hope this helps!

If you think Hilton Head is too urban you would want to stay away from Myrtle Beach. I'm shocked to hear it's cheaper though. Are we talking actual whole house rentals right on or very near to the beach? We are Outer Banks lovers. I need to break out of our comfort zone and try some of these other NC beaches that I've never tried. In the Outer Banks we live Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo. They are quiet smaller towns. Most attractions are a short drive away. We love it because the beaches are so uncrowded. It's nice because you can have fires on the beaches at night. Even though at kids are grown or almost grown, they still love to chase the ghost crabs that only come out at night around with flashlights. This year I've promised my daughter she can try parasailing. Here's the house we're renting this year.

There a family in our school who loves loves Myrtle Beach. They like all of the mini-golf, commercialization stuff because they say they are Active people. They like options if they're tired of the beach or weather is bad. It's so.so not our thing we've never been there, we've mostly gone to Hilton Head Sea Pines and the Outer Banks, with odd trip to Wilmington and Bald Head. Apparently we are slugs not Active. I think it depends on what you like. I'm more mellow now and could read or chill in a crowd if necessary. If the price difference is huge maybe I need to rethink Myrtle Beach.

Another one that says avoid Mrytle Beach. Hilton Head is nothing compared to Mrytle Beach. And Hilton Head is extremely quiet depending on where you stay and time of year. April will not be bad at all. We always stay in a house in Sea Pines on the water, and it's always so, so peaceful. Yes it's busy to get to the grocery, etc., but we know back roads and things to avoid from the "tourists." LOL! We have been going for 27+ years. Hard to count anymore.

It seems there are more beach house for good prices on Myrtle beach It is not like it used to be. There's an increase in crime within the city limits. So either go to North Myrtle Beach or a bit south...Surfside, Murrells inlet.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to keep looking at all your suggestions. We would really probably enjoy one of the state parks so I think I'll start with a list of them and look for housing nearby. I think my wish list is too long.
