I got a few less expensive inks today at michael by hero arts (dye based) and the images are not that sharp. I remember using (I think) Stazon years ago, but not sure tht's the best choice for card making.
What;s your favorite ink for stamping? Going back to joanns tomorrow to buy. Thank you!!!!

I'm surprised you had issues with HA. Could it be the stamp? I find that cheap stamps don't stamp well. Also, HA has different formulations of inks - dye and shadow. I find that the shadow inks don't stamp as well for me.
Personally I use My Favorite Things, Hero Arts, Simon Says Stamp, Stampin Up!, and TH Distress Inks. My favorite is MFT Hybrid ink.

I love Stampin Up and Papertrey Ink. Also have used Stazon with good results.
ETA just saw you were going to Joann's - but seriously love SU and PTI if you don't need them ASAP

Go onto YouTube and look up Jennifer Macquire - she does an ink comparison video which you may find to be helpful. There is also another couple of youtubers who do the same.......this may point you in the right direction

Technique is another issue. Don't press too hard. When you stamp, count to 10 ... The ink releases from the rubber faster than the paper can absorb it. Stamp on a rubber mat, yes your stamp has rubber padding, but you will find better results on a rubber mat. Get one of the new stamp positioners like the "Stamp Perfect" type.

I just did a book of ink swatches with all of my inks. The best stamping by far was Altenew (and I only have the cubes so that says a lot about them). I also have Ranger (regular dye ink), my favorite things dye ink, and stampin up. Some colors of Ranger stamped well, some didn't. MFT was better than stampin up but most of my SU pads are pretty old.

No tips on inks. I am kind of in the "old" on inks. I still use Versafine for most of my stamping & SU for my color inks mainly. I own all the major brand black inks.
Everyone has already posted great tips for stamping. I am going to add another one. Use an eraser on your newer stamps. It helps get a beautiful impression. I erase my stamps that are old too. I will stamp a few times on a piece of scrap paper too to give them stamp some "use" before doing a final impression if the stamp is new.
Hope that helps.

One thing that I love about Ranger Archival and Ranger Dye inks are that they are water-resistant. I find that some brands of ink, even when completely dry, smear a lot when touched with even a little water. There are some other brands that are also water resistante -- I think Simon Says Stamp, Hero Arts, and Lawn Fawn. I thought MFT is very vulnerable to water, which makes it good for techniques. Have you found the reactivity with water to be a problem? How is Altenew about this?

The ink you use depends on what you are trying to achieve. Are you stamping on paper? What kind of paper. Are you stamping, daubing, smearing? Are you working on wood, metal, cloth? All these kinds of things enter into what is the best ink to use. Here is a place to start www.tsukineko.co.jp/english/common/pdf/surface.pdf#zoom=100. I am not sure, but I would guess some of the other ink companies have similar charts.

Probably no surprise that the one with the least waterfastness is the one that stamps and probably blends the easiest. Attachments:

Probably no surprise that the one with the least waterfastness is the one that stamps and probably blends the easiest. In my limited testing, I have found that purples tend to be the least waterfast, regardless of the brand. I need to test this hypothesis further. I just got Stampin Up Blackberry Bliss and it smears a lot even after one week of drying. It is much more smeared than your Stampin Up sample.

I'm going to try to do some additional testing on my different colors too. I'm becoming quite an ink collector.

Gale -- This is so interesting. It's strange how some of the Altenews bled badly, but that one didn't at all.
Blows my theory about purples . . .

Gale - What paper are you using? You get really good coverage.

Versifine is my go-to unless I am using my copics, then I use memento. Distress inks are good for some techniques, but create a more distressed appearance.

I've always used memento but even after a fresh reinking I wasn't getting a good solid black image. I bought a MFT hybrid pad to try and it stamps SO nicely. I haven't tried it with copics yet. Gina K also makes a black that is supposed to work with copics. It's also supposed to work with watercolor but it smears for me (on the Neenah classic crest).

I've been letting my stamp sit longer before picking it up as Don suggests and have noticed it does give a nicer image. Thank you Don I love Versafine for my sentiments, Memento for images I'm going to color and Altenew for my layering inks.

My favourite ink for stamping is Altenew crisp dye ink.

If I haven't used a stamp in awhile or am using a new one, I wipe it with a baby wipe before picking up ink the first time. It kind of primes the stamp so ink sticks to it AND releases better.
Like others have said, for a crisp image, you need cs made for stamping.
How is the stamping going?

Here is the results of my ink / water test. They all survived a couple of drops of water on them. FYI -- The Umbrella brand is scrapbook.com's house brand. The Wendy Vecchi is her series of Ranger Archival. The results didn't surprise me because I tried to purge non-water fast inks from my collection. What got me started was when I was making a card with MFT inks, my finger was just slightly moist and the ink bled noticeably.

doglover , how do you like umbrella crafts inks compared to HA? I have been very pleased with the Umbrella inks and consider them very comparable to the HA inks. I'll try to do some coverage / spreading tests to show you in the next few days. The samples I showed are double-stamped with my stamping tool.

My SU inks are so very old they are starting to dry out, and I didn't buy the reinkers. It's time to update the ink pad stash.

Based on how reactive they are with water, I'm rethinking my decision to get all of the altenew inks. I used a dark blue to blend on a card yesterday and my barely wet finger (from cleaning a stamp) really caused a big reaction on it even though it was very dry. Luckily in an area that I was planning to trim off.

From what I understand, Lawn Fawn, Hero Arts, Gina K and one other (maybe my favorite things?) are made by the same company.
