Humor me ... A person goes through the car wash. There are kids drying on each side of the car. The kids split the tips as most people just hand out a tip through the driver's window. A particular driver hands one kid $2 and the other kid $5. What would you think was the driver's reasoning behind it?

Maybe they know the kid they gave the $5 to.

I would assume they know the kid on one side personally. It isn't just a kid drying cars but a nephew, neighbor, best friend's kid... something along those lines.

They didn't realize the kids split the tips, they only had 2 $1's and a $5 and they thought $1 wasn't enough, so they gave their $2 to one kid and the $5 to the other?

They assumed it would be pooled then halved but wanted to put something in each kid's hand - stretching, I know

They didn't have change for a $5?

More details ... they asked the girl if she had change and gave her the $5 and asked for $3 back. They gave the boy $5, did not ask for change and he did not know that person. Am I a bad mother if I wondered if it was a reflection on what kind of job they did? The girl was my DD.

I think that is bad. If they are drying the same car, you should tip the same. Very odd that someone would do that.

That's weird. Of course, I think a $7 tip for what was probably a $5 car wash is weird as well.

Yes, that was a ridiculously high tip, although the wash is more than $5. I just couldn't help but wonder if the person was making a statement as to the quality of the work on each side. I didn't say that to my DD, but it did cross my mind. Ann

I can't imagine asking for change on a tip.
I would tip both workers the same or not at all.

Maybe like a lot of employers they think males should make more money than females.

It was one tip from one person, when your daughter was drying cars. How good/bad could she possibly be at drying cars?

Honestly, when I first read your OP (before your update/additional info) I was going to suggest that maybe the tips reflected a better attitude or quality of work.
Or maybe the guy was just a jerk. Or couldn't do math. Or wanted 3$ to buy something at his next stop and he didn't have any other cash with him.

Thank you. I'm sure you are right, but we are having some issues right now about a proper work ethic and the value of a $, so I guess I just overreacted.

Don't blame your DD car drying skills! For goodness sakes, why so quick to blame her?
Maybe the guy was just a jerk. Maybe he believes that men should make more. FFS, maybe he's a pedo and prefers boys over girls.
Shrug it off. It was a matter of a few dollars.

Here's my take on it -- people are just odd. I see things each and every day that makes me think that quite often. I don't mean it as anything more than an observation and a way to amuse myself with people watching. Here's a prime example. Last week on the train, there was a guy sitting there with both a bucket style hat and a bicycle helmet on. He's on a train and obviously doesn't need either one. Oh and there's a wide open shelf to store personal stuff so it wasn't a lack of room to put at least the helmet somewhere. No harm, no foul, not my business and it doesn't matter to me the whys of his head gear but people are just odd (IMHO).

If your daughter's work was up to standard, I'd just assume the customer was a sexist asshole. Maybe they didn't like your daughter's hair, or that she had big boobs, or not big enough boobs. Or that she looked smart, or stupid. God knows with people but I'd make sure I'd let my daughter know not to get too vested in what some random idiot thinks of her. What matters the most is what she thinks of herself and if she's honest and hard working, then that's good enough.

I would let it go. There are a bunch of crazy and not so crazy reasons why the person may have done it, and you'll likely never know which, so just go with the person being a little odd and don't make it be about DD at all. It was just drying a car.

You said "they" gave tips. Was there money out of both sides of the car at once, and the driver was just dumb and didn't ask the boy for his change, even though they intended to tip both of the kids $2 each?
