We made it 6 weeks I changed cable providers at the beginning of July and dramatically cut back the number of channels we had. No one missed the channels, but the new contract didn't include a DVR and we only made it 6 weeks before I caved and added one for an extra $10/month. It was the PAUSE button we missed the most and I hated that many shows On Demand wouldn't let us fast forward through commercials. Could you/do you live without a DVR?

We changed cable providers last month and we have a DVR for the first time ever (and it's cheaper than what we were paying without one!).
But honestly, it wasn't that big of a deal to me to not have one. Pretty much everything I wanted to watch was available on On Demand 24 hrs after the original airing.
It's nice to have one, but I wouldn't be devestated if I went back to not having it.

I love my DVR. We have one on every TV I love FFing through commercials or parts of programs I might not want to watch. So I guess that would be not very long

Dumped cable 2 years ago and with it went the DVR. We actually dumped cable because we DVRed everything. 90% of what we watch is on Hulu, Netflix and Amazon. My kids do get frustrated at my parents house though because they can't pause.

Most of the shows we watch are from the DVR or on Demand. We are spoiled being about to ff thru a dvr'd show, sometimes it is annoying to sit thru commercials. Not to mention you can watch the shows so much quicker.

Wouldn't want to live without it. We record everything we want to watch and watch after the kids are in bed.

We DVR every program we watch. My hubby works shift work, so we rarely watch in real time. Besides I love to FF thru the commercials.

I can not imagine life without it anymore. Saves my sanity.. if the kids need something and I am at a pivotal moment in a show....no biggie, I can pause it. Works in reverse too- "Hey, LJ, please take out the trash?" No real need to argue. He can pause the show, do as asked and get on with it. I'd be lying if I suggested they don't argue or whine but missing something critical on TV is not the reason I just love having the flexibility. I have been binge watching West Wing and I know I have tons of shows DVR'd that are waiting for me

Like others, we DVR pretty much everything so we can watch without commercials. We also DVR all sporting events for the same reason.

I've never had either and you don't miss what you've never had. I rarely watch TV though so it's not worth the price for me.

It was three days with us. And it was mostly ME.. I couldn't take it anymore.. We went from Directv to regular no cable TV for about three days. I was ALL onboard. Oh yeah, it killed me. And plus no menu.. didn't even know what we were watching 1/2 the time. Never again. Well maybe never again..

Since we've never had it, I'm voting that I could last forever without it.

Oh, the horror..the thought of me not having my DVR! I use it everyday, all day and watch my shows at night. It's usually 100% full and still lets me record more when it is. I love that thing!

Never had one. I don't watch much TV though. It's rare that I can't watch it later on demand or just watch something else on Netflix.

I record just about everything I watch. I don't ever want to go back to being a slave to the tv schedule or have to wait for a rerun if I miss a show. I like to watch stuff on my terms, I have recorded every episode of the new series "Satisfaction" and "Rush" but I haven't watched any episodes yet, I will binge them soon and not have to worry about commercials!

We've never had one either. Not big television watchers. When I do watch, I use the commercials as incentive to get off my butt and do a quick task.

We have DVRs, and the kids use them all the time. I think I've used it once - to record a football game I was worried about missing. I could live the rest of my life without a DVR and not feel deprived.

I loved mine! But, when we dropped to basic cable I had to say good bye to my best friend. It only took about a month to get over it, when the next cable bill came in $100 less than it had been.

I didn't answer the poll because there wasn't an answer that really fit me.
I was an early-ish adopter of DVR, having gotten one in 2002. And as of April of this year, I would have told you that I couldn't live without it. But now I have, since early May. And while I really, REALLY miss it when I watch live TV, I haven't actually watched much live TV since then. I've watched tons of shows on Netflix and Amazon Prime, but not regular TV.
I will have a DVR again, and look forward to it. Hopefully in time for the fall TV season, but I'm not holding my breath (we have to find a house first). But yes, I can live without it, after all (I just don't want to.)

I never want to be without a DVR again. I can find most of the stuff I watch On Demand but you can't fast forward through the commercials and the shows are only available for a limited time. I love saving up weeks worth of episodes in my DVR and then watching them all at once. Plus the pause button, plus the fast forwarding. Totally worth the $10/month.

I chose "Couldn't live without it". We only have it on one TV because I don't want to fork out an extra $15 per month to get it on the other TV. It often frustrates me watching TV without it. I always reach for the remote so I can rewind to hear something I missed, or just to FF through the ads, or to pause if someone comes in and starts talking to me. Plus the convenience of being able to set up a series link to tape every episode of a show, things like that I would not like to go without.

I don't have cable but like the convenience of the DVR for recording a series and being able to fast forward through the interminable ads. I hardly watch any live tv now.
