I think the Republicans may have just gifted Democrats in swing states a giant cudgel come 2018. There are a lot of Republicans against this pick primarily in rural areas that don't have private or charter school options.

My husband is a public school teacher.
He has worked at the same school for 16 years. During that time he has been teacher of the year 4 times and nominated for teacher of the year 12 times.
Today he started looking for work in a new industry.

melissa - trust me - in my district we were paying 6 figures for an art teacher. A high school art teacher. You are correct about regional pay differences, but this is a first ring suburb to one of the poorest cities in the nation. Regional differences like this do not require a national solution. The vast majority of teachers nationwide barely make middle class wages, even after decades in the profession. And you know what? Good for a district that pays its teachers like the degreed professionals they are. Are doctors and lawyers paid less in your city because it's a poorer one? You bring students up by attracting the best talent to your schools, not by running them off with low salaries and excessive demands.

You reap what you sow. Again and again.
Mark my words....I think this will be another nail in the coffin of the Republicans. I think they are more scared of Trump than the people. But people will remember when it comes time to vote.

I'm not shocked, but I'm still exceptionally disappointed. I'm disgusted with the way my two Senators completely ignored their constituents on this one.

My mother was a teacher for over 25 years (she left to raise us and went back to work). She taught in a small rural school district making less than $30k with no benefits.

What happens if we go to vouchers, and here is no private or charter school to send your kids to, and the public schools fold? What happens if your voucher for the only private school in your area won't cover the cost of full tuition, and you are unable to make up the difference? What happens if your child has a disability, and the public schools fold, and none of the private or charter schools will accept them? Are all of these children not just as entitled to a basic education in this country as everyone else? I have not seen/read anything that can answer those questions. How can you be for something when there are no answers to the above?
And I swear to god if anyone mentions Obamacare and we have to pass this bill to see what's in it as a rationale for this I am just going to lose my ever loving mind.

But people will remember when it comes time to vote. I agree with this. This isn't about political ideology. She is completely unqualified. I'll definitely remember. I'm about ready to join the Democratic Party today, even though I am a fiscal conservative. But at least the Democrats still care about Education. The Republicans proved today they don't. Except for the two Republican Senators who were brave enough to vote against this confirmation. Sadly, they don't represent me, but I'm still tempted to send them each a handwritten thank you card.

Are doctors and lawyers paid less in your city because it's a poorer one Yes they do. The salaries are rising due to development of a new medical corridor, which is bringing in new medical technology and more patients, but in general the (non-public sector)salaries in WNY are based on what the market supports. I would make 2x as much in NYC in my profession. I also believe in merit pay. Just because you have longevity doesn't mean you deserve a raise.

There are a lot of Republicans against this pick primarily in rural areas that don't have private or charter school options. Churches all over rural America will be setting up "schools" to line up to take tax dollars w/low-to-no accountability or oversight from educators. You think education is expensive. Wait 'til we have whole generations of uneducated/under-educated youth trying to find a job in Automated America where the jobs require critical thinking skills. We'll have uneducated, unemployable youths roaming the streets for a score or a mugging. - just like so many other nations w/under-educated unemployable youths. Different religions, different ideology, same outcome.

Not the highest performing, but one of the best compensated. And they only contribute about 5% to their health insurance. I personally pay full boat and that is 17,800 for family coverage per year. WNY Teacher salaries (My district is #4) WNY school rankings (my district is #53)

I'm glad I left teaching.
I'm glad my twins will graduate from high school next year.
When I have grandchildren who are ready for school, I should be ready to retire from the University, and I can be their homeschool teacher if necessary (or maybe just start a charter school for them and take their vouchers).
My family will survive this educational catastrophe, but I worry about those who lack resources.

I looked at both seethruny and the wny salaries page. I see some 6 figure salaries but googling shows me these are primarily superintendents. I would guess that they would make 6 figures in a large district in an expensive state. Six figures for educating thousands of students to compete in our world seems to compare favorably to the eight-figure salaries (in the tens of millions) for those who bring in profits for shareholders by playing golf w/the right people.

I'm not aware of a teacher shortage. In fact, there are many certified teachers who cannot find employment. We have a teacher shortage in Oklahoma. Our Republican governed state cannot (or will not) afford the pay the neighboring states like Texas offers. Look beyond your own city, your own state, Lauren.

The Republicans want uneducated children as those are their future voters. While I don't have any underage children or grandchildren and I left teaching years ago, I am so sad for our children and teachers. The Republicans have just given a big fuck you to our future.

I actually question whether those two Senators were as brave as people say. After all, they knew she would still be confirmed. It's not like they had to stick out their necks that much. It wasn't a dangerous or courageous move at all. The more I think about it, I think it may have been done intentionally. I think it was confirmed today that our system does not work as intended. We were taught that our representatives in DC are there to represent our local interests. The phone calls, letters, emails, etc. have been unprecedented in this situation, and all of those efforts have been ignored. They're not there to represent their constituents at all, and that's just frightening.

Atrocities for American Children. We now have 100% proof that it literally pays to buy off congress. And you know what really ticks me off? Pat Toomey's phones have been turned off for days. On his facebook page, he claims it is because he was getting too many calls from out of state people and he only wants to hear from his constituents. Really? But you can accept $60K in donations from an out-of-state donor and then vote for her for a Cabinet position which she is highly unqualified for. And IRL, I do not know a single Republican who was in support of her. My Republican DH is losing all faith in his party.

A teacher at our rural school, in her 28th year of teaching, made less than the brand new entry level employee (her son) at our chain lumberyard. That is disgusting!

I am in the state ranked #50 for teacher pay. I am well-paid, but I have seen time and again that education is not valued the way it is elsewhere. Educated elites? Ivory towers? Respect for no-nothing's who have big mouths but haven't spent a minute in front of a class?
I am looking for something outside of education now as well. I love the kids, but without the support and respect of the people, I no longer wish to do it.
