Our only hope now is a pack of angry centaurs. Are you channeling Harry Potter, or is that just where my mind went? First thing I thought of.... the centaurs carrying off Umbridge. ![](http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/r481/2peasrefugees/Smilies/flamingmad.gif)

Whoever Senator Richard Burr is he said this: "Betsy DeVos has dedicated her life to improving education, so I am glad she will continue to fight for all children as Secretary of Education. Attempts by Senate Democrats to stall the President’s nominees only distract from the very real struggles of North Carolina’s families seeking the best education for their children." I guess he's probably North Carolina, but I'll verify that in a minute... But how can he possibly say she has "dedicated her life to improving education" ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ? omg, when has she been dedicating her life to education? Maybe the fancy private school education she had, and that she could afford to give to her kids. How can he actually SAY something like that? omg

Lauren, I get that you are pro-vouchers, but how do you get past the grizzlies?
Unless you whored yourself out to her, DeVos was simply an insane nomination. Anyone who supported her has severe credibility issues and has shown themselves to not have any rationality or sensibility.

You reap what you sow. Again and again. Mark my words....I think this will be another nail in the coffin of the Republicans. I think they are more scared of Trump than the people. But people will remember when it comes time to vote. I agree with this. This isn't about political ideology. She is completely unqualified. I'll definitely remember. I'm about ready to join the Democratic Party today, even though I am a fiscal conservative. But at least the Democrats still care about Education. The Republicans proved today they don't. Except for the two Republican Senators who were brave enough to vote against this confirmation. Sadly, they don't represent me, but I'm still tempted to send them each a handwritten thank you card. Welcome to the Dark Side. ![](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) We have cookies. Seriously, the Democratic Party is a big tent so check it out if you're interested. I also think sending the two dissenting senators a thank you card is a fabulous idea, and I'm going to do the same.

I am so angry I can barely type. So. Angry. This paves the way for the demise in TX public education. I cannot believe how blatantly the republicans disregarded the will of the people. It was very difficult to get through to my republican congressmen. Asshats. I am so mad. Did I mention I'm mad???
I have a PhD in curriculum and instruction. I fear for our schools, for the children who will be left behind in un-funded public schools when all the other students are sent to private schools/for profit charter schools. Disgusting. So much for ever having well educated people in this country. You do realize that our children will be our caretakers/scientists, our leaders of the future??? I'm convinced that they are trying to turn us into a fascist state.

From all the polls that I have seen and comments on FB pages of Republican Senators, I don't think that they voted the will of the majority of their people. On this one, I think that the kids are going to pay the price of Washington being bought off by the big dollar donors. Trump could have easily found someone for that cabinet that has some experience in education. More of the bottom suckers from the bottom of the drained swamp, being put in high positions in the government. She should fit right in with the buddies from Wall Street that now helping to run the government. Good job. Glad that my kids are no longer in school, but I do worry about my grandkids. agreed. i worry about ALL kids. Mine are grown and I don't have any grands. the future of our country depends on a well educated populace

I am in the state ranked #50 for teacher pay. I am well-paid, but I have seen time and again that education is not valued the way it is elsewhere. Educated elites? Ivory towers? Respect for no-nothing's who have big mouths but haven't spent a minute in front of a class? I am looking for something outside of education now as well. I love the kids, but without the support and respect of the people, I no longer wish to do it. I'm so sorry.

I'm not sure why this one got to me more than any other cabinet positions. I couldn't even tell you who the prior education secretary was. This ignorance and lack of qualifications of her for this position really got to me; I did contact my senators, more than once. Glad mine are done with school and I don't have grandchildren yet. This whole thing really scares the crap out of me. It should concern all of us regardless if you have children or grandchildren still in school. These kids that rely on public education are the next generation of doctors, teachers, politicians, etc....it effects everyone in one way or the other. No, they are not. In the grand scheme, the kids that rely on public education won't need an education because they will be sent to the military. Why educate someone who is going to die in a war? When Trump said he was going to drain the swamp, we misjudged his words. He couched his language to purposefully fool people into thinking he was going to change from the status quo. When he said drain the swamp, he meant destroy the establishment completely. His picks for Education Secretary and EPA and the rest are people who are meant to destroy, not improve. It makes me wonder what other promises he made that he intends to keep that was misinterpreted. It also infuriates me that congress is not doing their job and is allowing this megalomaniac and the Bannon to systematically destroy everything we hold dear.

I shitting bricks over this confirmation. My two kids have IEPs and my son is in an SDC class. It is already hard enough to get appropriate services. Now this will just make it 100× worse. On top of that dh is a teacher. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/mYSUyHtG9Jrcmm_ydVcK.jpg) This may be the nail in the coffin that pushes me to homeschool. Both kids have been previously. Their private services were WAY better than what the district ever gave.

@myshelley - I'm sorry, I'm really sorry that your DH has to make that choice
I'm still in disbelief - this woman is not qualified, has no education experience, and so many people voiced their opinion on her, and still they do this? I've called and emailed my senators several times this week, and the last today I said I will support their opponents in the next elections.
We have to do better for our future!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you to all the teacher peas and everything you do--I know you are doing your best to make sure we even have a future. And I will be sending thank yous to the 2 republican senators - really good idea.....

Atrocities for American Children. We now have 100% proof that it literally pays to buy off congress. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170207/4547cdcab8bbc99bfae8492bf2a2069f.jpg) And you know what really ticks me off? Pat Toomey's phones have been turned off for days. On his facebook page, he claims it is because he was getting too many calls from out of state people and he only wants to hear from his constituents. Really? But you can accept $60K in donations from an out-of-state donor and then vote for her for a Cabinet position which she is highly unqualified for. And IRL, I do not know a single Republican who was in support of her. My Republican DH is losing all faith in his party. Exactly. Out of State money is AOK. So donate to their opponents. Funny how they never mind out of state money, just out of state phone calls.

So do people hate her because shes wealthy and lacks experience? I fully admit I don't know much about her or the position why will this create a teacher shortage? why will this hurt teachers? what do you mean voucher? for what? for who? You might want to read the thread from the beginning, along with this one link HERE and this one link HERE and there might have been one more but I can't find it. She is in favor of taking public education tax dollars and using that money to give vouchers that could be used for charter schools or private schools. The problem is that the amount of the vouchers would likely not cover the entire cost of the for-pay schools available in many areas, so the net effect is that the neediest kids will stay in the worst schools only now those schools will have even LESS money available to educate those kids. This in turn will affect teachers because who wants to work in unfunded public schools with crumbling infrastructure teaching needy impoverished kids (some of whom may also have special needs, are not native English speakers and many of whom are already coming to school unprepared to learn)? It will also affect lily white kids like mine in good suburban schools, because money from our property taxes that has been earmarked for funding the public schools will be siphoned off by wealthy people in my community who are already sending their kids to private religious schools anyway, only now they will get to use the vouchers funded by general taxpayer dollars to get a break on the expensive tuition. My kid gets a high quality education in her public school because our community actively supports our schools, plus we have VERY dedicated educators and an active, engaged PTA. Even so, if it wasn't for the dollars that our PTA raises annually, my kid's school wouldn't have half of the library books, STEM resources, computers, iPads, smart boards and other niceties they currently have that help our kids learn. Our PTA also completely funds the payroll so we can have full time music and art teachers. So yes, vouchers will definitely create a negative impact all the way around regardless of who the kid is or which public school they go to.

It wasn't a dangerous or courageous move at all. The more I think about it, I think it may have been done intentionally. I think it was confirmed today that our system does not work as intended. We were taught that our representatives in DC are there to represent our local interests. The phone calls, letters, emails, etc. have been unprecedented in this situation, and all of those efforts have been ignored. They're not there to represent their constituents at all, and that's just frightening. I totally agree with this. There have been a number of polls going around that past 2 weeks and there was an overwhelming vote against her being confirmed. We the people are not being represented at all!
