Right now the other giraffe is pacing around like someone stuck in the waiting room.

Poor thing looks awfully bored. Don't most birthing suites come with a TV nowadays?
Do they know if she's in actual labor or are they just preparing for it?

Very cool. But I'm beginning to feel like I'm watching the same scene in a continuous loop. Head down, head up, stomp feet, other giraffe paces. And...

Youtube suspended their feed for "violating policy on nudity and sexual content". The park has a post on FB that they will be doing a FB live starting at 8am ET.

I cannot even believe the idiocy of some people. I cannot imagine that this is considered nudity and sexual content, unless you are a VERY strange person. As the guy on the video said, "This is why we can't have nice things." Someone has to come along and ruin it for everyone. Sigh...

it looks like it's still live to me on youtube... she's not doing much but switching her tail back and forth. She's got to be pretty uncomfortable! When will that (cute) baby giraffe come, darn it! (hopefully not during the meeting I have to attend, lol)

Did you know that giraffe have to give birth standing up? There was a conservatory who assisted with giraffe births and they mothers kept dying. They finally figured it it was because they had the giraffe laying down and neck not elevated.

How long is the typical giraffe labor? Poor thing must be bored out of her mind (not to mention terribly uncomfortable carrying around a 200lb baby in her tummy).

I keep thinking that it is awful to have her in such a small pen. I wonder if, like humans, being able to actually walk might help.

I keep thinking that it is awful to have her in such a small pen. I wonder if, like humans, being able to actually walk might help. I wondered why they had her penned up. If its to keep a closer eye on her, or if that zoo doesn't have better accommodations for their animals. Our zoo here has a large, comfortable (IMO) outdoor safari area for their giraffes, but it's one of the best zoos in the country so not sure how other zoos are nowadays. The giraffe in the background has been there for at least a little bit, so maybe there isn't anywhere else for them to go....

I watched a giraffe being born a couple of years ago and it was in the same kind of pen. It was amazing! Unfortunately, that particular baby died later in a freak accident.

Our zoo has a much bigger inside area for the giraffes in the winter.

I keep thinking that it is awful to have her in such a small pen. I wonder if, like humans, being able to actually walk might help. I have been watching on and off all day and they did have their outside doors open for awhile earlier in the day. They did not get to go out together since they said the male does not participate in birth or caring for the baby, and can sometimes be aggressive, but first the male's door was open for a bit, then later the female's.
