Oh wow, I just thought I was going to see the baby delivered. She was standing all weird and then her front leg would buckle. Then she started squatting and I was like, YES, THIS IS IT!, and she just plops down. Nothing but her laying still now like she's ready for a nap. That was some effort to lay down though, bless her sweet heart.

Ds6 and I just looked (nothing new, just pacing the pen) and got talking about how long a giraffe is pregnant for.....google says 13-15 months. Which begs the question, could it still be weeks till delivery? I thought someone upthread said giraffes don't show outward signs of labor, if true, how do they know it'll be soon?

I am guessing they have a good idea of when the pregnancy happened, plus the vet said that based on mammary development (and probably some other measurable signs as well) they feel like it's very close. What they don't know, is if labor is actively occurring, or just close. I would guess that at most, it would be a few more days, probably not weeks. Fingers crossed it's soon because I am glued to this sweet giraffe and not getting anything done, lol!

DD told me April has had 4 calves before this one so they are probably familiar with her symptoms. The vet was in with her yesterday and that was something to see. I wouldn't want to tangle with a quick moving laboring giraffe. She was not having any of that man trying to get all up in her personal business!

I wish they would clean her pen. I'm sitting here in the middle of a blizzard , switching between April and the Decorah eagles.

Someone just came in & cleaned out the pen a little bit. I've been watching her stomach for the past 10 min & it appears that the baby is quite active right now. You can see bumpy movements in her tummy. So cool!

I, too, got all excited for her tail to be up, then-- poop. (literally)
she better not go into active labor while I'm in my car on my drive home! LOL!!

So I watched the 2015 Dallas giraffe cam. The live feed I was watching went away for a bit and they offered up other giraffe births. That's a l o n g way for a baby to drop! Then hope Mommy doesn't step on the baby! Bundle of nerves I am! If April doesn't give birth before my bedtime, I think I'm good! LOL!

I wonder if some type of feed is happening. I clicked in about 5 minutes ago and they came in and cleared the poop and let the father in for a few minutes. Then I got out and went back in and the same feed happened.

Yeah. I just tried to look and it's not a live feed. I'm able to FF or reverse the video.

Yeah. I just tried to look and it's not a live feed. I'm able to FF or reverse the video. I think it's live for me, I can rewind but not fast forward. Sometimes my feed glitches and I have to refresh the page and then hit play again and it will be ok. Maybe try that?

I am west of the zoo, but in the same time zone and it's 8:45pm and dark out. Even after refreshing my screen, the sun is shining in the video so there is no way I am looking at a live feed.

I can't see a live feed either - it's showing daylight.

That's strange....my feed is definitely night time and they have the lights out in the enclosure, except for April's side which has a bit of light on the right hand side.

Here's the current feed. It changes at least daily because they have a limit to how much time can be on one video. Apparently they're saving all of the live video feeds.

The best way to find it each day is to go to their youtube channel and click on the one that says "live now".

Does she ever sleep? I have seen her sitting/laying down, but still awake. I have yet to see her sleep.

One time she bent her neck way over and rested her head on her bum. Made my neck ache to see it.

Does she ever sleep? I have seen her sitting/laying down, but still awake. I have yet to see her sleep. I saw the zoo answer this question somewhere...maybe in fb comments or possibly back when the live feed had chat....they said giraffes don't actually sleep all that much and only for 5 minutes or so at a time due to them being prey animals. Poor things, I am exhausted for them! Edited to add: just googled and found out they only require about 30 minutes of sleep per day! Wow!

Early Saturday morning here, east coast. Just checked on the poor gal thinking SURELY overnight that baby would have been born since I always miss these things live. But nope, poor thing is still pregnant.

I was sure I'd miss it overnight too. 30 minutes sleep, after walking all day on those long legs sounds tiring. Thanks for factoid, moonglowe21
