JI promised some tips & tricks for the newbies. Anyone who has already played, feel free to jump in with some tips as you think of them. I will copy and paste yours to this first post when you do, and I may add more of mine as they occur to me later.
1. Read the rules thread before you start. I print it off so I have it in front of me when planning what to do. As bonus points are added periodically, I print off the longer list (maybe once per week if there are a lot of new things added).
2. Count your points in your "SPOT" in the Stats thread.
*****Some people copy and paste the rules into their message, and add points to each line each time they finish a project.
*****I find it less confusing to add a date line in my post for every day I earned points and then list what the points are for.
*****Either way, you should keep a running total in that stats post.
3. For your first creation, don't forget that you can give yourself at least 3 points if you registered in February (1), created a page (1) and this is your first creation (1). So 3. But check the bonus points to see if you can add any more to that total.
4. Starting March 1st, you can ADD rules to the list. You do this by posting in the Rules thread. If you choose your suggested additions wisely, you can end up with extra points and extra fun during the month.
*****You can suggest adding points for something you do all the time on your projects. For example, if you always use your own handwriting, and that gets added, you will get an extra point for every project.
*****If you really want to challenge yourself and try something new, then suggest that as a bonus point. For example if you haven't used your stamps in ages and you want to dust them off and use them, then make a suggestion like "Use at least 3 stamped images on a project" and you will get extra points every time you use those stamps.
*****If you are playing along with the challenges here, you can add them as suggestions for a new rule, and maybe you can earn a point for using Chinagirl828 's stash challenge list, or DawnMcD 's diecut of the month. If you are playing along with crystalb 's stash-ket challenge, you could throw down a bonus rule that you need to use "at least 3 old and at least 3 new" items on a project, or something like that.
*****Your suggestions can include types of projects (eg birthday cards) or topics (say Christmas) or media (say using burlap or canvas), as well as techniques and products (say using paint or ink with a stencil).
5. Other people will be adding suggestions, too, and those suggestions get added to the Rules list sporadically. You can't claim points for those rules until they actually show up in the bonus points list, and you can't go back and give yourself points for something that shows up in that list AFTER you have already claimed points for a project.
6. You don't need to share your creations, but for me that was half the fun. I started out trying to link my Flickr photos to there, but I found it was easier to upload photos of my projects directly from my computer to the Get It Scrapped Gallery.
7. Don't forget that you get points for commenting on other people's creations in the Calvinball Gallery (1 point for every 10 comments), so don't forget to check in there regularly.
8. Watch for the Leaderboard message at the end of each week. When the form is posted, you can add your current running total to that form. When the form has closed, the organizers will post the Leaderboard to let us all know who has the most points.
9. Some points have limits or restrictions attached. (One point a week for publicity, one point for every TEN gallery comments). Most bonus points can be claimed every time you meet that rule (so if "use paint on a project" is a bonus rule, the you can get a bonus point for every project on which you use paint). But keep checking out the One Time Only bonus points. Add THOSE up when they apply.
10. Just have FUN!!!
