Happy Monday! I can't believe another week has flown by! I had a busy weekend with my family at a water park on Saturday and at my FIL's pool yesterday. My sore hip appreciated the break and I think it will be ready for a run tomorrow morning. Off to do my strength training so I can deal with the problems I woke up to this morning. Gotta love Monday mornings.

Good morning! I ran before dinner last night, so today is a day off for me. I walked the dog for 2 miles this morning, so I did move around a little. We are going to the Redskins v Browns game tonight, so it will be a late one. I'm supposed to run again tomorrow, but it may be a struggle. But, it will be worth it - I do love football and we have good seats.

Sounds like you had a fun weekend in the water! I went to the beach and ran on the boardwalk, then we stretched out doing yoga on the sand, then played some beach volleyball.

Had my long run yesterday, 8 miles. No run today. Moderate 4 mile run planned for tomorrow. I'm kind of freaking out over the 1/2 marathon coming up in less than 2 weeks. Eeeek! It's going to be a whirlwind between the air travel, the time change, and the fun planned. I'm not sure I'm going to get much sleep. It may be a fast walking 1/2 marathon and not a running one.

@oldpeanewname - I just ordered new shoes and wanted to pass along the link to Running Warehouse in case you've never shopped there before. They have a great return policy and often shoes are on sale. I'm lucky in that I wear a 7.5 in my Nike's and that means I can fit the largest kids size. I just bought two pairs of kids shoes on clearance for the price of one women's pair. Two day shipping is free and you can return them for free for any reason within 90 days if they don't work. Can't beat it! elaine - Have a great time at the game tonight! annabella - Looks like a great place for a run! anna*Banana - That's how I feel about my upcoming half in September - it will be a crazy short trip! Hopefully worth it, though. MaryPea - I run outside and I think about my safety. There is a lovely rails to trail trail here and I generally don't run it by myself during the week anymore. On the weekends there are enough people that I feel comfortable doing it solo. So I run around my neighborhood and I honestly worry more about dogs off leash than anything else. I carry my phone with me and use the Road ID app (free). When I start it up it sends a text to my husband with a live link that he can click on to see where I am and it sends him an alert if I've stopped moving for 5 minutes. Sometimes I think I need to carry mace or something but I've heard that can harm me just as easily so I just try to be sensible and hope that nothing bad happens.

While there are some gorgeous trails through parks around here, I only run on sidewalks and running paths that border busy streets in my neighborhood. So, I'm not worried about assault. I'm mostly worried about being hit by cyclists on the sidewalks, cars in crosswalks, or my own clumsy self tripping. I always run with my phone, so wouldn't hesitate to hit 911 if there was an emergency.

MaryPea my biggest concern is being hit by a vehicle, happened to a college student a few weeks ago and to a man by a bus last year. Both had headphones on while crossing the street and were killed. With my sunglasses on and music I have to say my peripheral vision is not the best. Where I run there are tons of other runners.

Not only is that app great for peace of mind, it's awesome if you have somebody waiting/watching for you along a race route. Instead of trying to estimate when you'll be at a certain point on the course (which can be difficult at large races when you don't cross the start line until 10-20 minutes after the start), you can just include them on the alert text (it works for up to 5 numbers) and they can look at the link to see your progress. I used it at my last half & it was really handy. Here's a link - looks like you can get it on iTunes & Google play.

Hi everyone. Tuesday here already I did 15km yesterday at my goal marathon pace and today was a hill run. anna*Banana well done on your 8 miles and you'll do great in the 1/2 MaryPea I do all my running outside, mostly early in the morning. It's pretty safe where I live and I do several runs by myself and a couple with a group. I don't really have any concerns about personal safety but I like to be visible to cars and I also wear a light so I can see the ground well and don't trip!

Just finished a 3 mile run tonight. Really only my second run since getting back into training. It was slow, but I'm not worried. Even running at 8 pm, it's still nearly 90 degrees here and muggy. That's slight breeze made it a bit better though. I was a bit stiff since I did a 28 mile ride on my bike yesterday morning.
I run mostly outdoors as well. I always carry my iPhone just in case, but I run in a nice suburban neighborhood along the sidewalks. Plenty of people out running, walking, etc at this time so I don't really feel unsafe.

You ladies are doing awesome! I'm so proud of all of us. Ugh, I was at my Dad's yesterday and wanted to try out his treadmill since I've never used a treadmill, but would like to get one. Anyway, I get on and ask him to show me how to use it. He decides to be "funny" and turns it on and up to a 7 instantly. Needless to say I was injured. My foot is cut and all scraped up. I was so mad! I have a 5K this weekend, and now it hurts to put on my shoes. I'm going to wrap up the sore spots and try to run in the morning. I have to get some mileage in this week! On another note, I started my new job at the gym today. It's really easy, but it was fun listening to the classes going on and listening to all the pumped up music. I'm getting more songs for my workout playlist.

I'll admit there are plenty of shady people around here. We had a woman "molested" and killed on the local running trail not a year ago. That freaked me out pretty good. While that is always something I think about I'm more worried about cars hitting me and or dogs when I run local to my farm. On the military base, where I run my long runs, I don't worry about much of anything... I do carry a pellet gun for the dogs. We have an area that I refer to as "crack ally" and there are times when you can't be sure the pit bulls are in the house and those things kill goats and chickens on a pretty regular basis. I would not hesitate to give them something to yip about.

My husband has a road ID bracelet and he is ordering me one as well. He has also thought about the app. We have a lot of trails around here and I feel safe in my little town however I am leery about going down by the golf course after dark. Many of my friends do not share my apprehension. I am trying to comfortable going on our river trail by myself.

Has anyone read The Cool Impossible by Eric Orton. He was the running coach for Christopher McDougall author of Born to Run. I got a copy and asked my husband to read it first. It is not about barefoot running, rather it is about strengthening your feet. I am hopeful it will help with my IT band issues and help move me from only walking to running.
DH is halfway though and has already built the appliances to have us both start the program. He is hoping it will help him with his hip issues.
I was wondering if anyone had any tales or experiences to tell.

I'm just in from a 38 minute run where i fought with myself the entire time to keep going. Decent pace (yay!) but i rubbed a sore spot on my arm (again). Today's run was later than yesterdays - not sure if that's what made it harder but i did it.

I would like to get a dog to run with, but then I think what a huge responsibility that is. lol I am planning to get some mace to take with me. I meant to pick some up the other day and forgot.

Got in 2 miles this morning. My foot did fine bandaged up. I use iSmoothRun though, and it seems to be messing up on me. Somehow my time keeps getting slower and slower. It says it took me almost 20 minutes to go one mile. I KNOW that's not right. And I measured the same distance going out and coming in. For the same street it measured .14 one direction and .21 the other way. That's not right either. The other day I did 5 laps on the track and it only counted 4, but it counted the time for 5. I've got to figure out if I've messed up the settings or if it's an iSmoothRun problem.

Week 4 day 2 of C25K this morning! The first run I've had where the whole thing was miserable. Darn humidity - it's like running under a warm wet blanket even at 5:30 AM.
But I did it. I used a GPS app and I went 2.2 miles at an 18 min pace (gulp). I'm really slow! But that included 10 total minutes of warmup and cool down so my active pace was probably a bit faster.

I was suppose to run 3 yesterday but after chasing my 1yo niece all day I had to pass! Today calls for 5 miles, most likely on the treadmill. It's my last week before tapering do I'm happy for that!
I wear a road id and carry my phone. I'm not worried about where I run because when I do there are people around and it's on a semi busy road as well. Luckily my neighborhood is pretty safe but I do aka ways run with one headphone in to hear traffic and other people.

Thanks for mentioning that Road ID app, Yoki. I do go through a short, woody trail and across a dam on my route, so that app will be a nice "better safe than sorry" extra to have with me.

I need to start posting in this thread to help keep me motivated. I have actually been pretty motivated on my own the last couple of months but I'm sure the day will come that I need the extra push.
I power walk, not run. I was doing a 10k (give or take a couple of tenths of a mile) 5 days a week but I had to cut back on that. I was getting a lot of blisters on my toes and feet. I seem to be able to go just over 4 miles before the blisters start rubbing and hurting. I am using mole foam sometimes and that helps a lot. But, I have also found that if I keep my power walk to somewhere between 3.5 and 4.5 miles, I can then come home and get on the elliptical for about 30 minutes and my feet don't suffer as much.
I have one area that I find a bit creepy that for the most part, I avoid. For instance, I live in a master planned community. There are a lot of tunnels that go under the roads within the community for the runners, walkers, bikes, etc. but they are not lit. There is one that I can take to get to the other side of the road but in the bright light, I can't see if anyone is in the tunnel until I am almost in it. Then, there is a trail that has some areas that someone could easily hide. I was talking the other day with a friend who runs. We were talking about the paths we take and she was talking about the same creepy spots I was. So, I guess it is not just me. LOL
Anyway, I am doing very well with my speed walking. I can usually walk my first 3 miles at about a 12:30 minute mile and then it slows to about 12:50 - 13:00 per mile. I went on vacation and got on a treadmill one day while there. On a treadmill, I walked 5 miles at a pace of about 12:15 per mile so slightly under 5 mph.

I will have to check out that app. I usually text my DH or my DD and let them know I'm going walking, where and about how long. I carry pepper spray on a lanyard. I have been bitten by a dog and there are so many around here that are off leash that I just don't trust. I have had to spray one dog that was coming after me. It wasn't a direct hit, but it got his attention and he left me alone. I don't like doing it, but I also don't like being bit. It hurts like HELL!
