another run this morning where i had to fight w/myself to keep going but i did! 40 mins, 3.5 miles. whoot!
Made a revelation yesterday - i think my running shoes are killing me. that ankle pain i mentioned a while back? it's back. I think it's my shoes - they are the same model i've worn forever (brooks adrenaline), but the last time i had my gait reviewed they told me that this shoe might overcorrect my pronation. Sure enough, i think that is what is causing my foot pain. So (thankfully i have a flexible job) i am going by the running store on my way into work today to get a professional opinion.

I think they create other problems in the leg. Have you tried adjusting your gait yourself? If it's foot strike you can fix that yourself. I had to change my foot strike when I started having problems with my toes bumping into the toe box and PF. It was about 3 weeks of conscience running, which meant slower running, with a shorter stride. But success! And not running to exhaustion helps too. Which this humidity seems to be an issue with, lol. Just beginning my run in 80% or more humidity is exhausting from the first step. BTW, I've become a real fan of the Hoke One One. I don't think I can run in anything else now...

Yes definitely go to a running store to get fitted. Makes all the difference!
I ran 3 instead of 5 yesterday but will try to make it up later this week. I realized it helps a lot to watch netflix instead of listening to music,

Got my 4.15 miles in just now, and it was a struggle. The heat and humidity just kick my butt! My weather app says it is 85, but feels like 89 because of the humidity. Blech!
I loaded Disneyland into my weather app and was happy to see that it is cooler there than here, and it hopefully will only be in the upper 60s - lower 70s when we run.

got my new shoes! I'm now a Brooks Ghost 7 wearer. The guy there said that i need no stability now (neutral, i think he said), so i am excited about my new shoes for the run tomorrow!

and my new shoes are awesome. My ankle feels better already. Short run this morning (30 mins) because i had to get on the road to work early, but it was great.

Been a slug for the last two days. I killed my first pair of sneakers(adidas - something or another) and I'm afraid of my new ones. Bought them Monday night, but was kind of rushed and they didn't feel quite right when I put them on in the a.m., so skipped walking/jogging. Bought different ones Tuesday night, and I'm still unsure, so I skipped Weds to avoid dealing with them.
And here it is thurs and the bag is stare-ing at me and I'm procrastinating. I probably should have gone to the running store, but instead just went to the outlet mall and tried on a bunch of running shoes looking for something comfortable. I just couldn't justify pricey running shoes for my 13-14 min fast walk/jog. It isn't like I'm burning up the road. Maybe in a few months, if I keep at it, it can be my reward.
I wish I could just fix my trusty old sneakers. When did I become such a creature of habit?

Okay, I can totally understand not wanting to spend the big bucks on good running shoes, HOWEVER you will be much more likely to keep at it and still jogging a few months from now if you start out with good shoes. If you have shoes that just aren't right for your feet, at best you are setting yourself up for a series of unpleasant workouts, at worst you may injure yourself. Either way, it makes it less likely you'll stick with it. You've already skipped several days this week because of them. Treat yourself to shoes from your running store that someone has helped fit you. Please! You and your health are worth it.

I went to my gym (to workout) for the first time today. I did 3 miles on the treadmill. It was definitely easier to keep going on the treadmill, but I was soooo shaky when I got off. I'm sure I looked drunk walking across the gym. LOL

I went to the gym twice after my dog walking. I did the treadmill -- running for 15, walking inclines for 15, and then elliptical for 15. My hip is still hurting, so I'll probably stick with the elliptical for a bit since it didn't hurt at all on that. I think the mrtyl exercises are helping, but it still hurts to run. Sucks to be over 50. Right when I think I've got it together, something else starts hurting.

happy Saturday y'all! everyone still out there?
I'm now walking on the treadmill in the morning instead of outside. It's too dark in the early morning so i switched. There are pros and cons to both... any who, still getting a good run in every morning.
And for those that were talking about eating healthier, i started Weight Watchers a few months ago and although it's slow, i'm down 16 lbs too! I would like to lose another 15 lbs but so far so good!

I'm here. I skipped my runs this week for a variety of (boring) reasons/excuses. Hoping to manage a long run of 8 tomorrow morning when the weather is supposed to be cooler & less humid. I got my new shoes that I ordered so I'm looking forward to breaking them in.

I may need to switch to treadmill running this week. I think I've hit a wall with the heat/humidity and progressing any further on my C25K program. Even at 5am it's 85 degrees and the air is like a wet blanket.
Any tips? On bad thing about the treadmill for me in the past is that it's way too easy to just stop if I get tired. If you're a mile from home on the road, you have to keep going just to get home.
I'm not sure I can make myself go out and start week 5 in this weather, though, so trying the treadmill might be a better option.

I walked every day except for yesterday and today. It is just too freakin' hot!!! High is around 99 and heat index 105+. I might get in the pool later and do some kind of exercise

It is too dang hot around here to run right now. I'm trying to get some time in because i have another triathlon coming up but I am desperately falling short. Running in 100 degree temps with about 98% humidity is for the birds!!! m

Love them normally but this most recent pair is a tad short on my foot. I think they changed their design a bit this model according to my running store. I think I may need to go up a 1/2 size myself. I have a neutral gait with some under-pronation so I am surprised they put you in this shoe if you are pronating. I would have thought you'd wear the Glycerin or the other Brooks shoe maybe. Maybe even an Asics shoe. let me know what they tell you! meredith

A coworker s suggested watching TV...doesn't keep me interested. Another coworker suggested loud music + a movie with closed-captioning on so you have to read it. that might work for me, maybe for you too?

For the walkers, I have a question. My daughter and I were talking and complaining about our hands swelling up when we walk. It takes some time after our walk for them to go back to normal. Is there anything we can do to stop them from swelling?

Is there anything we can do to stop them from swelling? That happens when I walk on hot days. I looked it up and it is normal, they aren't sure why it happens, and there isn't much to do to prevent it. What you can do that helps a little, although it looks strange, is to alternating raising your hands for as long as you can (30 seconds per hand) while walking if your hands are swelling. Having them above your heart will help with the swelling, but won't prevent it as soon as you drop your hand below your heart. When you get home, soak your hands in cool water and then sit in the middle of the couch with your arms up across the back of the sofa, as if you were sitting next to someone and wanted to put your arms around their shoulders. Keeping your hands up above your heart will help the swelling go down more quickly.

Hi everyone - you all seem so accomplished with this running thing. I am 50 with asthma and I am training for my first 5k on October 4th. I am worried; right now I am running for about two minutes and power walking for about 1 - 1:30 minutes. I know that I should be focusing on finishing the run, but I am afraid of not having a decent time. People I know will be apart of this run. What's a decent time? I am hoping for under a 12 min mile.

WELCOME! At your age, Jeff Galloway would recommend not shooting for anything faster than a 12:30 mile. Given your asthma, you may want to think about 13:00 miles. Especially for your first race. Walk-run-walking is the way to go at our age. It actually allows us to have faster mile times and run consistently. Being a very competitive person, it has been VERY hard for me to accept the mind shift necessary for me to successfully train for and run races. At 51, if I train too hard, or try to go too fast, all that happens is that I injure something and then it takes my training back three steps as I have to take it much easier in order to heal. If you can, please let go of trying for any particular time for your first race. Instead, aim for finishing with a smile on your face, enjoying the experience!

Baseballmom23 - Welcome & congrats on training for your first 5K! Elaine gives great advice & speaks the truth about the run/walk method. (I do it, too!) I think that a "good time" for a race is when you finish the race with a smile on your face, pride in your accomplishment and no injuries. If that means you come in last, so be it. (Although if you run any portion of the race at all I can almost guarantee you won't.) No one who is running the race - even if they finish it in 20 minutes - will look down their nose at your time because they'll be happy you're out there participating. You're doing great with your intervals and you'll do great at your race!

Like many, the heat has been a factor with me going out to run. At 51, I follow Jeff Galloway fairly religiously and only run 3 days per week. I also walk my dog 2 miles every day, so that is my consistent exercise. But I do 2 4-mile runs during the week and then a longer run on the weekend. Again, when I say "run" I mean a walk-run-walk process. My typical training times are between 11:30 and 12:30 miles.
