I went to the gym twice after my dog walking. I did the treadmill -- running for 15, walking inclines for 15, and then elliptical for 15. My hip is still hurting, so I'll probably stick with the elliptical for a bit since it didn't hurt at all on that. I think the mrtyl exercises are helping, but it still hurts to run. Sucks to be over 50. Right when I think I've got it together, something else starts hurting. I know! The aches and pains you never knew you'd have! lol I have to keep telling myself the overall benefits out weight the other stuff. Do you find you can run past the aches and pains and get on the other side of it while running? I know there are thresholds one needs to get over and passed sometimes. My right hip is just a mess from a couple of falls off of horses when I was in my 30's. When I run it keeps it from hurting, but I have to run into mile 3 before the initial pain starts to subside. Nutty, I know...

My last long run was suppose to be this morning but my brother bailed on me and I don't like running alone in the dark. Said we can do it tomorrow but bailed already lol! So, going to run on the treadmill, maybe 6-8 miles tomorrow.

Hi everyone - you all seem so accomplished with this running thing. I am 50 with asthma and I am training for my first 5k on October 4th. I am worried; right now I am running for about two minutes and power walking for about 1 - 1:30 minutes. I know that I should be focusing on finishing the run, but I am afraid of not having a decent time. People I know will be apart of this run. What's a decent time? I am hoping for under a 12 min mile. I'm just going to echo everyone else here. Once we seem to hit this mysterious age, the whole game plan changes. First, it's all about staying injury free and finishing. To worry about time and such makes us push too hard. There's a beauty in accepting what is and embracing it. I'm also going to echo Elaine here. The Galloway method is just, plain and simple, the perfect method when you reach this magic age. I've run my whole life but had essentially given it up a couple of years ago because I was constantly suffering from stress fractures in my feet. I won't bore you with my health issues, lol... Suffice it to say, using the Galloway method I run. I run and train 15-20 miles per week. Not to shabby for a 55 yo with multiple health issues.

I have also worn Adrenalines for years. Love them normally but this most recent pair is a tad short on my foot. I think they changed their design a bit this model according to my running store. I think I may need to go up a 1/2 size myself. I have a neutral gait with some under-pronation so I am surprised they put you in this shoe if you are pronating. I would have thought you'd wear the Glycerin or the other Brooks shoe maybe. Maybe even an Asics shoe. let me know what they tell you! meredith They hooked me up with Brooks Ghost and i love, love, love them. He said i definitely need neutral stability shoes now. GHOSTS!!! I knew there was another Brooks shoe in that line up that would work for you!!! I have loved my Brooks shoes and just can't even consider wearing anything else now. Glad you got some new kicks that work for you! meredith

Thanks Yoki & Elaine - I appreciate your words. For so many years I have been told I can't run, because of my asthma. So, its a script in my head that I am trying to break. How often do you guys run? I work out with a partner once a week and do yoga once a week. My 3rd work out day is usually some weights and/or machines and power walking on the treadmill. Like many, the heat has been a factor with me going out to run. At 51, I follow Jeff Galloway fairly religiously and only run 3 days per week. I also walk my dog 2 miles every day, so that is my consistent exercise. But I do 2 4-mile runs during the week and then a longer run on the weekend. Again, when I say "run" I mean a walk-run-walk process. My typical training times are between 11:30 and 12:30 miles. I have his app on my phone and I am starting to get use to it. Thanks for letting me know that you walk-run-walk your distances.

MaryPea - congrats on the weight loss - that's awesome! I'm glad you got some new, comfy shoes. Merge - I don't have access to a treadmill and live in NC so I have no choice but to deal with the heat & humidity. I run as early as I can in the morning, try to hydrate well and remember that "fall PR's are made in summer heat". I also take pride in just how sweaty & disgusting I can get at the end of a run. octoberbeauty - I hope the Glow Run was fun and not too hot! suzastampin - My hands swell up, too. I usually try to shake my hands out every so often and make a few fists/release the fist. Baseballmom23 - My goal is to run three times a week. Four miles each on Tues/Thurs and a long run anywhere from 6-13 miles on the weekend (depending on where I am in my training schedule for my next half marathon) for a total of 14-20 mpw. I try to get three days of bodyweight strength training in (squats, pushups, planks, tricep dips, leg lifts, etc ...) to keep everything else strong, toned & happy. My runs are also run/walk intervals (currently 2:30 run, 30 sec walk). My pace is all over the place (I have no problem taking extra walk breaks if I need to), but a 10 min/mile is fast for me. I'm usually in the 10:30 - 11 min/mile range. Anna*Banana - If something still hurts at about 2 miles I figure it's pain and I need to walk. If it goes away by that point I figure I've finally warmed up. (Part of the reason why I hate 5K's - sometimes I feel like I've just barely warmed up & it's already over!) I do not always follow my own advice and I'm sure I continue to run when I shouldn't be. candygurl - Good luck on those miles today! @oldpeanewname - Great job! I use Runkeeper, too, and love that I can go back and look at all my runs.

Just got my 4 miles in. Have I mentioned how much I hate running with a cast on? I really needed to do 6 miles today, but it just wasn't going to happen. My first mile was 11:04, but my 4th mile was 12:30. . I'll be so happy when this thing is finally off.

The Glow Run was HOT!!! It was still in the 90's at 9 last night. Crazy hot! It was also very crowded and unorganized. The packet pick up line was so long that they had to start the race without our stuff. Most people had to go back later to get their bib/glow stuff/shirt. We ended up staying in line after it cleared out and ran in the last wave [HASH]7). So, I was disappointed in the organization of it all, but I still had fun. I also made some new friends. That makes the heat worthwhile!

oh the pepper spray on a lanyard is a great idea! easy to reach to get out of harm's way.
I so didn't want to run today but got on the treadmill and said, ok I will do 4 miles since that is how long the episode is. Did my 4, got off to use the restroom and hopped on for 2 more. Than I couldn't leave that episode with 20 min left and did another 2, so got my 8 in! I am really happy I was able to go that long on a treadmill and actually wanted to do 2 more but didn't have the time. My last long run till the half!
Oh I was watching The Killing on Nexflix. Totally am binge watching the show and I only have 2 seasons left;(

I was supposed to run today but instead we drove to Fredricksburg VA to pick up a W/D, Fridge and gas grill from DS1. He and his wife just moved into an apartment and guess who gets to store more of his stuff. He has *promised* he's going to retrieve it all and bring it home so it will get moved when the military moves them in December. I *promised* him I'm dropping it all off at his doorstep if he doesn't come get it, lol. Anyway, never got my run in. But I'm struggling with muscle spasms in my calves these days. I've looked at the experts and while there's lots of people that will say it's not enough magnesium or salt or what have you, they've yet to figure out these ghost leg muscle spasms in runners. They've got some theories but no concrete causation. Frustrating... 1 week away from the half marathon and I DO NOT FEEL READY!
