I made a trip to Savers yesterday. I found some good stuff. I found a new, condiment server with its tag still on. It's rectangle shaped with the attached lid that you push back. There are four pieces that fit into the container with room underneath them for ice. The attached lid is a nice feature for outside use. A vintage glass sugar dish with a stainless lid and spoon. I like the Pyrex sugar dish I got the other week but it's awkward for the kids to use so I'll switch to the one I got yesterday. A Lia Sophia necklace with abalone beads. A vintage faux cameo pin in a regal setting set with nice stones, perfect to dress up a winter coat.
Hoping that my good luck would continue, I also stopped in at Goodwill. It was a dud, but it never hurts to check.
There is an auction tomorrow night. If I think I can handle the cold I'll go. It's supposed to be really windy and cold tomorrow. Last week I wore a parka, used foot warmers and a lap blanket and was still cold. But, I do love a bargain and maybe the cold will keep some of the competition away.
I was thinking of all of you on my way to work this morning. Sitting on the curb was a free French Provincial bureau. It was in great condition and easy to imagine with a new paint job.
I hope you all have fun and success on the hunt this weekend. Don't forget to report back on your hits and misses. I love free furniture finds like that, it always kills me when I don't have time our transportation to pick it up, more than once I've called dh to go check something out when I've seen it by the side of the road :-)

Sounds like some of you have made some great finds this month! I had lunch with a friend today and took the 'scenic' route home, stopping at 2 thrift stores I rarely visit. One reason I rarely visit them is that they don't have much that is worth sorting through. The other is that one is a Goodwill store that is overpriced. Today I say a new skein of Red Heart yarn....for $3.99! With a coupon or sale, it would most likely cost less than that at Michael's or JoAnn's. They think very highly of their donated merchandise.
The other is a local thrift store and I did manage to find a nice handpainted needlepoint canvas for just $4.00. That will eventually be listed on eBay. Then I stopped by my normal thrift store before heading home. Nothing good in the fabric/craft or scarf departments today. However, I did get a new in box set of Anthropologie glass magnets for just $3. That will go into my gift drawer. I also picked up a 3" herb pot from the Botanic Garden line of Portmerion for $3 as well. After looking on eBay, it appears the herb pot originally came with a saucer. It will still be a cute little pot to set out on the counter.
It is supposed to rain tomorrow so I plan to stay home and work on more eBay listings. There weren't any garage sale or estate sale listings that interested me enough to get out and get soaking wet.

But when it's just the two of us together and we don't have any time deadline it can be a lot of fun. Slow and steady wins the race is her to a tee. Because of it, she sees things that other people miss.

I'm almost afraid to jinx us, but we've been really fortunate this month. I made two different trips to Savers and found a total of 3 Bakelite bracelets on the junk jewelry wall for .99 and $2.99! Two are bangles and one is a stretch style. Another day I stopped at Goodwill and found a whole bin of colorful plastic silverware just sitting on the shelf and it all turned out to be Bakelite. It wasn't priced so I asked how much it was (expecting it to be a LOT) and the manager said "oh, it's the regular silverware price". I bought all 82 pieces. The most surprising find were some Disney figurines. Someone had donated about 15 from different movies, but 3 of them were Pinocchio characters and looked very primitive. My SO other joked that it looked like someone painted them at Color Me Mine, but there was a mark on the bottom that said Brayton. I looked it up quickly and found out Brayton Laguna was the very first company ever licensed to make Disney ceramics and Pinocchio was the first movie they released characters from. These particular figures were from 1939/1940! Turns out they are super rare. I just can't believe something that old survived all these years and then just got tossed into a Goodwill bag.

A not too local scrapbook/craft store closed this week. I went there at 10 and a sign said they weren't opening until 12! So I went back. I bought about 30 divided sheet protectors that were individually priced. I also bought paper, 1/2" scallop punch, Kiwi lane templates, 1 sheet of stickers, and 1 sheet of cardstock stickers. My kids were in a play that was based on fairy tales and I was very happy to find paper that had Little Red Riding Hood images. I also LOVED the sheet of Carta Bella camping paper. Now, I want to buy the collection. It was all 45% off. There was a lady there who had terrible gas. I honestly left early for that reason and I probably saved some money.

So here is my update on the auction house tag sale. I bought a vintage pottery bowl in orange, black and white. I also got a vintage grater that I am considering putting those tiny battery operated LED lights behind and using on the kitchen wall. The last things I bought were some book pages that I think I will frame and hang in the parlor.
I was sad that I had put aside an enamel dish and when I went back to my pile of stuff it wasn't there. I asked about it and one of the owners had put it somewhere else. It looked like it must have hit the ground because there was a tiny nick in one corner and a line in the enamel that wasn't there before. Because of the damage I didn't buy it. Kind of ironic that I had her put the stuff aside for me so I wouldn't drop it while I was looking at other things.
That awesome Fisher Price merry go round was there still but it was damaged this time. It was covered with thick sooty dust that wouldn't shake off and two of the labels had started peeling off. What a bummer, I should have bought it the first time I saw it when it was in great shape.
My sister bought something like eleven things, mostly glass. She bought a large, red frilled top, hobnail vase. Two white hobnail vases in unusual shapes. A blue piece of Fenton with the clear glass frill. Blue satin glass, two piece candy dish with a bird in a nest... All very neat stuff.
Our hearts went pitter patter when one of the owners said that what they had out was only a small amount of what they got from one living estate. What they had was from storage and none of the three floors of the house they are emptying. Apparently the attic is full, but it was just too cold for them to spend any time up there. So, we're both definitely looking forward to a return visit when they have their next sale. Hopefully our other sister can come with us next time.
One her way home from my house my sister stopped at both Savers in our area. She definitely enjoyed a day long shopping spree.
Antique shop had some beautiful German steins and Toby Mugs that hadn't sold at their last auction. They were awesome so I can only imagine how wonderful the ones were that they sold at the auction.
Check in again tomorrow to read my post about Saturday nights auction!

I went to the auction Saturday night. It was cold like I expected but not as cold as the previous week. I was prepared for it and had foot warmers and a lap blanket. I really expected it to be less people than usual because of the cold but it was jam packed. A lot of people who hadn't been there since November were in attendance. I hope that it is an indicator that we will start seeing better merchandise.
I spent more than usual but got some great things.
There was nothing good in the new merchandise.
Only two boxes of Special K nourish bars purchased from the new food portion.
I bought three packages of book plates and people were looking at me wondering what I wanted them for. I'm not going to use them as book plates, I want to frame a couple of them. $1 for all.
Two plastic trash cans. Nothing special about the one, but the other one is a blue recycling one with the recycling symbol in white print. I got them for the recycling one for one of the kids bedroom. I don't think a bedroom really needs two trash cans but am realistic about how my child is when it comes to trash. I washed it and brought it into their room and immediately they started sorting. Awesome.
Cutco knives. I had some spirited competition. I won the bid and then promptly one hits the ground when I'm handing them to my husband and the tip got bent on the paring knife. Ugh. If it hadn't been a concrete floor it wouldn't have gotten damaged.
Six Pyrex bowls. Surprisingly, only one other bidder. Usually Pyrex goes for a lot at the auction. Two matching patterned pink in graduated size and one plain pink. One patterned blue and two plain blue. $15 for all six.
Two unused, vintage Coca Cola t-shirts in the classic red with white print. $2 for the pair.
And, last but not least, a box lot of five boxes of random stuff. Wow, was there some seriously gross stuff that went straight into the trash. There was also some decent stuff like new in the package hardware, a new package of shower curtain rings that are the same as the ones we already have that I'll save in case I ever break one when I change the shower curtain and liner, well over 100 drapery hooks (which I knew my sister needed), a pocket calculator, pocket tool kit in a zippered leather case, some crazy vintage knit/crocheted crafts so silly/weird that they make you laugh and perfect for those white elephant swaps, and other random decent stuff that I don't want. Of all five boxes, I threw out one, am keeping or giving to family one box, and dropped off to the cat rescue people for their next tag sale three boxes. Pretty sweet for $1.
I wanted some yellow Fireking coffee mugs but they lumped them with some other Fireking mugs and a Jadeite mug and went for more than I was willing to spend.
They had a Jadeite bowl that went for big bucks. The winner definitely overpaid for it. There were a lot of scratches in the bottom of the bowl. I hope they realized it prior to bidding.
Some things went unsold. One great deal was a pair of lawn chairs that looked pretty new, $2 for at least $100 worth of chairs. There was a hand carved chair that looked like something out of a fairytale. I think it went for something like $10. I thought the auctioneer was going to choke, he was definitely expecting it to go for much more.
With up to 24 inches of snow expected today and more snow in the forecast for the weekend there is a good chance that next weekend the auction could be cancelled. I hope so, it's going to be too cold and messy.
Thanks for listening. I hope you have a great bargain/find to share with us.

On a whim I bid on an antique child's tea set and won. I'm not entirely sure why I did that because I have two boys but it was too cute to pass up and under $25. I also won an auction for some 3D glasses for our tv, I hope they suck less than the cheap pairs we have. Luckily they were only $8. Sadly I was sniped on the auction for a painting I liked but I really didn't have a spot for it anyway. Reminds me I need to go pay and arrange pick up.

Best...story...ever! A friend and I went to a designer consignment sale in our area. It is held once a year and in a closed down Macy's. We were looking at purses and she loved a dooney & burke bag. Used and $40- but in like new condition. She bought it but had wished it was cheaper. So we get in the car and she looks in the bag...$20- cash inside a zipped pocket! She ended up getting a great bag which retails for $275- (I had to look it up) for $20-! SCORE!

I went to Savers with my sister, and my niece ended up meeting us there.
My sister and niece each found something. Nothing caught my eye.
I noticed that there were a lot of things in housewares that were there a week and two weeks ago.
We went out to eat afterwards so it was a good night.

Today I stopped in at Goodwill. It looked like a lot of people have already started their Spring cleaning, the store was really full. They got in a huge shipment of books. To visualize it, imagine a traditional square playpen 3/4 of the way full with books. That's a lot of books. I only bought one thing (which I'm very pleased with), a new in the package, 49 piece, Lego Spider Man vs. The Venom Symbiote, for $1. A new mini figure for our collection. May you all have the Luck of the Irish if you head out bargain hunting today.

So proud of my scores this morning at a yard sale! DD is pregnant. And broke. I'm using that as an excuse to buy cute baby things. Went to one yard sale today and got a pile of baby clothes that is 2.5 feet tall (that's a lot of baby clothes!) for $15. Mostly baby essentials like sleepers and onesies. But some really nice outfits too. Probably 25 basic white newborn/0-3 month t-shirts and onesies. About twice that many colored/patterned onesies, several baby nightgowns, blanket sleepers, blankets, bibs, socks, etc. At the same yard sale I got this: www.kidsii.com/brands/disney-baby/60059-finding-nemo-sea-play-walker for $5. MSRP is $65! Looks brand-spanking new. Lady said her neighbor gave it to her to sell because she didn't like walkers for kids.

Today was a big goodwill day, picked up my 3d glasses which work and the tea set. Won 4 auctions that were really one mid century modern tea set divided in 4. I hate it when they do that because I'm afraid someone will bid on part of it. Someone did, but only on one part so I paid $1.05 more than the base price, I got 11 cups and 10 saucers for something like $33, they have cool mid century modern snowflakes on them, very different from your traditional tea cup with roses.
We hit goodwill after dinner since it was next door and I found the same brand of ice cream maker I had as a kid for $2.99. Originally I was considering buying one online but it was about $30, glad I held off! I also found 2 Harry potter ties for $1.99 and $2.99, so I'm all set for when the kids want to do Harry potter, since I got costumes cheap when target did a sale, but they didn't come with ties.
Then I got a package from an auction I bid on, unfortunately the toys smell of cigarette smoke so I have some cleaning and airing out to do. I really bought the auction for the squawkers mccaw parrot robot since I have a project in trying to do (mange a taking parrot). I'm planning to remove the existing fur and replace it with different colors so hopefully the plastic doesn't also stink. I also put in an order for the circuit board tonight so I just need to order some feathers and fabric and I'll be on my way to having a tiki room barker bird :-) The extra toys just came asking for the ride but they are in various states of working so I have to figure that out too since my kids want to play with the elephant and kitten too. Fun day :-)

It sounds pretty neat. Please keep us updated with your progress.

I always love reading what everyone is discovering on these threads! I got four boxes full of Christmas decor & ornaments at an estate auction yesterday because I spied some cool vintage stuff in them. I dug through this morning and sorted out the good stuff. Best part is I only paid $10 for the lot because I think most people just saw the junk on the top. There's one or two I'll keep for my vintage tree and the rest is going in my Etsy shop. I also picked up a great wingback chair there for $40. The tag under the seat is from a professional furniture restoration company in our state so I assume they reinforced and upholstered it. It's going in the guest bedroom unless one of my boys talks me out of it. Lol.

I went to the auction last night. Last night wasn't as crowded as last week so that was nice. My sister checked things out and then left, she had other stuff to do that was more important.
For new stuff, I just got two packages of bath bombs. They are shaped like eggs and come in an egg carton, perfect for Easter baskets, $1 each.
New grocery stuff, one box of Special K bars with pretzels, $2.25.
For used and estate stuff:
A good sized box of rubber bands, $2. It's time to make some rubber band balls!
New in package, seven day, big pill holder that holds each days worth in a removable strip, $1.
A cute towel for one of the kids for gym class, $1.
Woolrich down jacket for one of the kids, $1.
One box of random stuff, $1. It had a cute toothpick holder in it and some nice shells. The rest will be donated.
Four new, open house signs with the metal wire stands, like they sell at Home Depot, for $5. We'll cover them and use them for tag sale signs. Much more sturdy and nicer looking than using cardboard and wood.
Two new looking, nonstick frying pans. $1 for the pair. Now we'll have to go through our pans and decide what to add to our camping gear.
Clear Pyrex, four cereal bowl size with glass lids, two bigger bowls and two loaf pans. The kids and my husband are always using my Tupperware to reheat pasta and are staining them. This will put an end to that. $4 for all and I will put the two loaf pans in my tag sale pile.
One of my auction friends bought some of that smokey colored Pyrex and only wanted one to replace one that she broke, so she gave me the two pieces that she didn't want. I didn't have any that big so it was nice of her.
My sister left me $5 to bid on two stacks (enough to fill a box) of new with tags, ice cube trays and later texted me that she would go up to $10. Who's her favorite sister now? I am. I got all of them for $1.
The only thing I bid on and didn't end up with was a new with instructions, Celphalon (sp?) grill pan. I went up to $12. It sold for $15. I think they are great pans, but they are very heavy, so my husband would be the only one to use it so I knew it wouldn't get used a lot.
Everything pretty useful and fairly priced so that was nice.
Things went for decent prices. It's fun to watch people and wonder what they are going to do with some of the stuff. One lady bought seven new, and wrapped, rawhide bones that were for big dogs, that's a lot of rawhide. I don't know what they sell for at the store, but she paid $2 each.
A fun auction, followed by eating out with my husband and coming home to watch a little Netflix with my husband and one of the kids. It was a good night. The only thing that would have made it better would be if my sister had stayed at the auction and then gone out to eat with us.
Fill me in, what did you find this weekend?

Anything you wanted but went for more than you were willing to spend, or anything that made you wonder what the heck someone was buying it for?

Anything you wanted but went for more than you were willing to spend, or anything that made you wonder what the heck someone was buying it for? They had a bedroom suite that had a nautical theme with ship's wheels and sailing ships on it. I have two sons in the Navy so I was drawn to it, but I know my boys would laugh me out of the house at the thought they would actually use the set! It was just one of those mama moments. The funniest item was two mounted turkey feet on a plaque. It sold for $1. The guy who bought it took a lot of ribbing from the auctioneer and the crowd. Lol.

Fun day :-) What a good day. It all sounds pretty neat except for the cigarette smell, fingers crossed that you can get the smell out. I'm really interested in your project for your tiki room. It sounds pretty neat. Please keep us updated with your progress. I will try, I am going to try baking soda on the stuffed toys, they're sitting outside and were wiped with baby wipes and a little vinegar, but they still have an odor. I might hit Joanns today to get fabric with my 60% off coupon :-) I don't have a tiki room (yet) but the kids really love it (as do I) so I was going to try to decorate the nursery in a tropical theme for when the kids will use it as a shared room. Right now I have a mish mash of animals and nautical.

Found 3 of these 70s juice glasses at Goodwill last Saturday. Much cuter in person. Paid 34 cents ea. Love them!

For the stuffed animals, get some of the extra strength Febreeze spray. Take them out in the sun and spray the heck out of them. You can also spray them and run them through the dryer on delicate cycle. You may have to repeat it a few times, but it should eventually get rid of the smell. For the plastic stuff, either a vinegar or Febreeze bath should help immensely. Another method that worked (though it takes more time) is to seal things in a bag with activated charcoal. You can tie the charcoal up in some cheese cloth or old panty hose.

Is activated charcoal the stuff you use with an aquarium? Yes it is. You can buy it in bulk packs and make your own bags, or they sell it in smaller mesh bags ready to go into aquariums. It's really good stuff to get rid of smells. Do be careful what you put it next to because it will rub off on things. I always wrap a sheet of tissue paper around the bag before putting it in with other stuff.

Well, I went to a different grocery store then normal and passed by a Goodwill Outlet and decided to stop by. First off, I quickly discovered this what our locals call "the bins" where you pay by the pound, and it was a little crazy. Second, people at the bins are ruthless, there was a travel perfection game and some guy opened the box and shook all the pieces out and then tossed the after looking at it. I tried to grab the pieces to put them back and see if they were all there but he was so busy flinging the stuff around in the table it was too difficult. Other then that people descended like vultures any time a new bin came out and it was hard to worm your way into any bins just in general. I did find another a Little People garage with cars in perfect shape so I grabbed that and a tiny Hagrids Hut. I then dug through the books and got about 6 in good condition (I am super picky about books I buy for either school or the special kids in my life) and a copy of Bossypants by Tina Fey for myself. Most of the books were in poor condition, but I wonder how much of that is because of the people flinging them with wild abandon. A friend of mine once got a first edition on Anne of Green Gables at the bins, and it was in beautiful condition. In any event, I am pleased with what I got,but other then the books I don't think it was any cheaper then regular goodwill. I do wonder why some stuff ends up there though, some of the stuff was in really good condition and had prices on it, why wouldn't they just sell it at the regular store? Seems to me there were so many things that were just getting trashed and separated by being there making the value way less,
I am pleased with my FP garage and books though, 25 cents a kids book is pretty great!
