I don't have much opportunity to shop thrift stores or garage sales but I love reading this thread! And y'all are totally enabling me on the FP toys. I have several complete sets plus extras from when my kids were little & now my 2 1/2 yo grandson is loving them. On my eBay watch list, there is the garage, circus, Sesame Street neighborhood.... I want them all!
I did hit a yard sale in my neighborhood yesterday & picked up a big shopping bag of toddlerbooks & puzzles for $5.
Can't wait to see what else you girls find!

Anything you wanted but went for more than you were willing to spend, or anything that made you wonder what the heck someone was buying it for? They had a bedroom suite that had a nautical theme with ship's wheels and sailing ships on it. I have two sons in the Navy so I was drawn to it, but I know my boys would laugh me out of the house at the thought they would actually use the set! It was just one of those mama moments. The funniest item was two mounted turkey feet on a plaque. It sold for $1. The guy who bought it took a lot of ribbing from the auctioneer and the crowd. Lol. Those mounted turkey feet sound like the perfect white elephant gift. I'd love to know the back story behind that plaque. lol

The National Wild Turkey Federation headquarters is right up the road from us. I would bet somebody seriously had these mounted to show off their "first turkey" or something like that.

Bossypants by Tina Fey for myself. I love that book! I'm planning on MAKING myself work on my basement. I'm hoping to donate lots of stuff. I haven't got around to looking up prices on my daughter's books and listing them.

We don't have any "chain" thrift stores in my area like Goodwill and Salvation Army. We have thrift stores that help support our local humane society, women's shelter, Pink Ladies (hospital), Boys and Girls Club and a church thrift shop. I only went to my favorite on Friday since I had to go to the bank and it was just past there. I've been having trouble with starting my car and didn't want to make more than one stop, went through the drive through at the bank so only one stop!
Only bought one thing, a never before used Printworks Rubber stamp for $1! It was one I've seen and wanted but knew it was at least $7. Well, checked Hobby Lobby's website and Printworks website, it is normally $8.99!
I got a wonderful Christmas Gazebo park that works great at one of the thrift shops in early December for $10. I found the EXACT one on eBay that was NOT in as good shape as mine that sold for $89 just a couple of weeks before! I found it when googling for a picture so I could put it together right.
A few weeks ago, I got my puppy Mandy a really cute halter that looks more like a pink, purple, green, turquoise halter top than a halter. She likes it better than her regular halter so it must be more comfortable. She is 7 months old and a tiny 6 pound, 6 ounce b&t Dachshund. Mandy has made out like a bandit, since I've had her, I've gotten her a small pink crate, the halter, several xx small and x small sweaters and a coat. a fleece blanket to add to our doggy blanket collection, the book, the Ugly Dachshund, a Dachshund brase statue that had one larger and two smaller Dachshund. It was perfect because at the time, Felicity was the larger and Amanda and Mandy were the same size and it just looked like the three of them.

As I was putting some things away I realized I didn't post about the estate sale I went to this weekend. I got there about 1 3/4 after posted start time. It was the saddest sale ever.
Some stuff in a storage pod, on the patio and in the house, really not much at all. Envelope after envelope of receipts and many years worth of tax returns in boxes in the pod. The owner was aware of it and said something like just leave the papers and I'm going to be burning them. I'm inwardly freaking out thinking, hello, social security numbers, identity theft...
Bureaus and end tables full of lingerie, socks, nightgowns, empty prescription bottles. I bet if you went through things carefully in those drawers there were probably things that shouldn't be sold.
I got two vintage aprons, the fancy kind for entertaining. One large A&W Root Beer mug. 3 Dynaware casserole/soup dishes and 3 Dynaware custard dishes. If you look up Dynaware on Ebay, the dishes at the top are the ones that I got in the same pattern. I also got one vintage pillowcase because the pattern was so cute. My total for all of it was $2.
The saddest part was the man having the sale was doing it because his ex-wife died and they co-owned the house. It sounds like she froze to death on the floor and a pipe burst and was pumping water into the house until he got there 18 hours later. I would guess that she slipped and fell or had a heart attack or stroke. I can't imagine how frightened she was; and I wish she hadn't been alone. This elderly man is now faced with the task of getting rid of everything and just about having to gut most of the house to repair the damage so he can sell it. Meanwhile I'm sure someone has to watch over his house out of state. And, I don't think he can stay in the house while it's being repaired so he has to pay to stay somewhere else as well unless he has other family in the area where he can stay. If I thought he would have accepted help I would have offered it.

No one should die like that.

Yesterday I was out running errands-had to go to the library, UPS office and the grocery store. I wasn't planning on it but something told me to go to Goodwill. The last time that happened I found the off brand "Ugg" boots I really needed because my LLBean version had a hole in the front. So I listened to the voice and went.
What luck! I found a rain jacket that I was looking for. I need one for my upcoming trip to Europe in May. It's a Royal Robbins one and it fits me perfectly. It has 2 pockets in the front and then one near the chest area. The hood has a regular hood, but also a small visor to keep the rain from getting in my eyes. And it's a pretty color too-kind of a light purple/blue. I got it for $7.99! Looks brand new.
I also found 3 short sleeve shirts. 1 is an Ann Taylor shirt in black-really cute with a V-neck and a little tie and the bottom of the V. Looks brand new. 1 is a really Ralph Lauren print of blue/green/white wavy stripes that really brightens up my face and the last one is another Ralph Lauren light blue one with narrow white stripes in the softest cotton.
All of this for $27.00!
What I'm planning to do on the trip is wear short sleeve shirts and then take long sleeve sweaters to layer over them. I have one in white, one in green and one in black. This has been so much fun shopping for clothes at Goodwill and on Ebay for this trip. I still need a couple of pairs of jeans (I'll get those on Ebay because I want a specific brand and style) and I'm done. Oh and a new pair of Dansko clogs but that I'm buying new. Even got a new handbag on Ebay for a huge savings. I don't think I'll ever buy retail again unless I have to.

Today I found a series of books called "Alphapets." They're from the 90s, and there's one for each letter of the alphabet and the title character for each one demonstrates a character trait. All 26 were there, and I paid 50 cents per book. Come to find out they're fairly hard to come by and fetch a decent penny. I love it because Matthew's a voracious reader. He's been asking for books with "small words but still pictures." He can read chapter books but he still likes illustrations, but doesn't want "picture books." These fit this bill perfectly.

When I go in with the auction company to help pack up and clean out houses for estate auctions, you'd be surprised what we find.

I went to the auction last night and spent less than $10 dollars. I got:
A new in the package, LED, battery operated lamp, batteries included. New in the package, craft knife with seven different style blades. Box of mixed toys including vintage Fisher Price people. Small tray lot of toys that the auction runner dumped into my other box of toys. Hopefully nothing got damaged. The box is still in the car trunk. A three box lot. One has new notepads, another has envelopes and stickers, and the last one has disposable toilet brush refills. I'll donate the toilet brush refills. A lot of five, vintage, filigree metal picture frames.
My sister was lucky, she was going to bid on one thing and the auctioneer just kept adding to it. She would have paid for the one item what she paid for the whole lot.
The only thing that I missed out on was a lot of minerals and shells. The shells weren't anything special and there were a bunch of minerals that we already have great specimens of. What I really wanted was a large geode that had been cut in two and two jars of Mount Saint Helen's ash. I just couldn't bring myself to bid any higher than I did. The person who won the bid was someone who I hadn't seen at the auction before.
I thought of Spongemom Scrappants, and the chicken feet at her auction last week, when one of the runners held up a gross racoon pelt. It was stiff as a board and mangy looking. I think I breathed a sigh of relief when no one bid on it.

I made a trip to Goodwill yesterday. Right when I walked in a purse caught my eye. It honestly doesn't look like it was ever used, it was so perfect. Talbots brand for $4.99.
It looked like they got a vintage doll collection donated. It sounded like they had a bunch more earlier in the week. I bought three dolls, two at $3 each and one for $1. The one for $1 has beautiful hair and blinking eyes. The other two are smaller and have exaggerated eyelashes painted on, blinking eyes and elaborate outfits. I would estimate that they are all 1950s or earlier.
The last thing I got was a new in the package, felt ornament kit for .50 cents.
Does anyone else have any good news to share?

Very large ceramic tiki pitcher for the tiki bar $5. Not vintage but pretty cool. A vintage ceramic faux wood painted tiki mug for the tiki bar $2. Supercool vintage Florida souvenir mug $1. Some cute Lilly Pulitzer shorts $4 A couple of weeks ago I found two Lilly Pulitzer dresses in my size for $5 each. Both are from very recent non-Target collections so this was a total steal.

Does anyone else have any good news to share? I totally scored today. I peeked into the Salvation Army and found a solid wood bookcase for $14.99! It was exactly what I was looking for, in terms of quality and size. I already have it up in my bedroom, with my books on it. I also bought my kids 6 Dr. Seuss hardbacks for 99 cents each. I have a new reader who just loves Dr. Seuss. And you can't beat a buck a piece!

Is the pitcher an olive green? I bought one last August, it's a shame it had a few chips but I just painted them with craft paint as it's for display. I think it was from 2002.

I don't think I've posted to this thread for a while...
A couple weeks ago, I was at a Goodwill where there was a big influx of craft supplies, pretty obviously from one person's collection. I found a star-shaped hole punch, some European-brand specialty metallic paper (still in the package), and a LOT of rubber stamps. The person must have been a Stampin' Up! consultant, and I scored some REALLY nice wood-mounted stamps and sets, some of them unused-- one set hadn't even been mounted to the blocks. A set of Easter / Spring stamps (going to make Easter cards this year!), a set of SU! SouthWest stamps (unused and unmounted), and about 10 other wood-mounted Southwest design stamps. All in all, the retail on the rubber stamps alone would have been well over $100. The stamp sets are ones that are retired, but I'm keeping them rather than try to sell them.
(I've gone back to that same Goodwill again occasionally just to check for any more craft supplies they might have hidden in the back, but so far, no luck.)
Last Saturday, I went to an estate sale and spent a good 3 - 3 1/2 hours combing through a VERY crowded master bedroom closet that was in total disarray. BUT, for my pains, I got a pair of leather sandals and 13 items of clothing (in VERY good condition) for $1 each. The lady's tastes matched mine, and she had some really good name brands. Those prices are way less than the GW half-price day prices, even. The clothes I bought ranged from Sonoma and Croft & Barrow to Talbots, Chaps by RL, and Chicos. A few of the items -- Talbots: raspberry colored knee-length cotton skirt; Chaps: preppy striped tee-shirt; Chicos: brightly-colored patterned cotton capri pants; white sleeveless knit sweater with lace detail on the neckline, poly-blend cargo-style capri pants, Zenergy by Chicos tank top; Sag Harbor black and white patterned knee-length poly blend shift dress; bright blue cotton Gloria Vanderbilt shorts, etc.
-- the shorts / capris were tight- about 1 size too small- but hopefully by the summer they will fit. (I know that's not how I should be buying clothes, but dang, they were too nice of quality, and too cheap, for me to pass up!)
I could have bought SO many pieces of clothing that were Talbots, Ralph Lauren, Chicos, etc. brands but I only bought items that were my style and that fit me (I tried them on in the bathroom).
I started thinking about it later: I need to find a consignment store to sell to, or something... If I knew they'd buy the clothes from me, I could make a nice chunk of change being a clothing picker, at those prices! Has anyone done something like that before? I think I need to check out some of the consignment stores around Phoenix and find out what sort of things they do buy.
ETA: the estate sale was for a house that was decorated in 1980s ultra-country style, with a lot of dark wood, blue/white plaid, baskets, geese, birdhouses, etc. Out of style, and way strange to see a house decorated like that in Arizona!

I forgot to add my scores Won an auction for a portable ac, one we were looking at buying new, but for about a fifth of the retail price. Hope to pick it up Friday. Found an ice cream maker like I had as a kid for $3 and have made at least 4 batches thanks to Costco's giant cream.

It turns out I've got one more post for this months thread. I went to the store with one of the kids last night. One the way back home I caught a glimpse of something on the curb. At the next corner I looped back around to see if it really was what I thought I saw. It was, a Barbie beauty head in the box and a Barbie carrying case. They are late 70's or early 80's. The head is perfect with the brush and comb and someone styled Barbie's hair into a chigon. (sp) The case is full. I'll wait until I get home this afternoon to look through it to give myself something to look forward to. It looks like we're playing with Barbies tonight.
Woot, woot. It's a nice way to wrap up the month.

I had to drop some stuff off at the Humane Society Thrift Store yesterday, so I made a super quick run in. I found a Disney Robin Hood 33 rpm record- the kind with the book- in perfect condition and another Disney 33 album that I had when I was little that is 2 records and a compiliation of their greatest hits. They were 50 cents each! I am really excited, I don't see the records with books very often-especially Disney, so I was really happy!
