I went in today and as I was standing behind the lady who had about 40 items at checkout, I was wondering why there prices aren't just in the system.
The poor cashier had to keep pulling out the flyer and double checking every item.
It seems like such an inconvenience. Do they just not want to invest in the technology? Or the person to actually enter the prices every week?
It can't be that hard to set the prices in the system. Way easier than expecting the 100's of employees they have to remember every item that is on sale.
I don't get it.

I often wonder if by not scanning them that they make money if the cashier doesn't take off the sale price. I hope thats not it but today when I was there everything I bought was on sale but if I hadn't been watching I would have gotten charged full price instead of the sale price.

Same thing happened when I last visited.

I've asked that before in HL. I was told the owners think it is more personal to ring up purchases this way rather than scanning them. Nevermind that you can find what you want in about 30 seconds and takes 30minutes to check out! LOL That is what we joke about anyway! It takes forever to check out in HL. Not really, but you get the picture!

The HL in my city just upgraded their cash registers about a year ago. The ones previously looked like something from the 80's. I have wondered too why they aren't more automated. I seem to ALWAYS get stuck behind the person buying 50 different stems of flowers. Takes forever to check out.

Maybe Hobby Lobby "higher ups" are too busy with their health insurance yeas and nays?

This drives me nuts, too. And because the sales are up to the cashiers, I got overcharged over $20 the last visit I went. My HL is over an hour away and so it took an email and a few phone calls to get a refund without having to go to the store.

This drives me nuts also, I have left HL many times because the line is too long and can get whatever anywhere, and then the manager on the floor is calling for help and doesn't help with the line just calling baffels me. Like really??

HL drives me crazy for the same exact reason! I was there last week and had to wait behind a woman returning all kinds of flowers, candles, small bits and pieces for flower centerpieces she never assembled. I almost lost my mind. Check out is terrible, but returns are a special kind of hell. Of course, they didn't call for help until a huge line formed and everyone scrambles like ants when the new cashier calls out, "can I help someone over here?" It's never the next in line. I'm pretty much done with that store. Unless they start selling something I can only find there.

I thought I remember reading at one point they said they don't have a "normal" system is because they can keep their cost to do business lower.
But I agree, I have pretty much written off the HL that opened in our area in April. Have gone twice and they never have anything on the shelves and takes forever to get checked out.
I will be happy to take the hour drive to Crafts Direct.

This is just one of many reasons that I won't shop at this store. Whether their excuse for the non-automation is true or not, it's simply bad customer service. I've been in several HL's across the country and they are all the same with horrible lines and not enough checkers. The worst part about their excuse is that more often than not, the cashier could give a crap about be personal with you.

I don't have the checkout problem at my HL. The place is always empty.
Maybe putting an HL store in a neighborhood with a high percentage of liberals / Jewish people wasn't particularly smart.

it's just so inefficient. I hate that the cashier has to keep look at the sales ad. an actual photo of the sales ad where the sale items are written in small letters. acckkk. so antiquated! I feel like I've practically stepped into a mom and pop operation.

This is what I found on Hobby Lobby's website:
It's a non-answer.

I don't have the checkout problem at my HL. The place is always empty. Same here. So far everyone I have found who works there has been very pleasant, helpful, and professional. It took slightly longer to check out, but not that bad. They carry some different things than the other big box craft stores. I like that I can buy Silhouette mats and blades there and use a coupon on one of the items. I am pretty sure that Michael's didn't let me use a coupon for those items. Since they seem to be fairly empty every time I make the trip, I don't know how long they'll stay in business there, but I am glad to have them while they last.

My guess is that it would cost a lot to upgrade all the equipment at all of the older stores, so they just do what they have always done. But at some point it will have to happen because the cost to NOT do it (irritated customers, losses from things being rung up incorrectly, having to upgrade POS payment systems to avoid security breeches, not to mention the sheer inefficiency of it all) will be higher than just biting the bullet and upgrading.
I personally find it to be pretty annoying to have to stand there and wait while the cashier has to stop and think when ringing up every. single. item. All the while, my kid is begging for all of the plastic impulse junk and candy that they have up at the registers that I simply refuse to buy!

I'm not a fan of their quaint ways, paying for your items should be prompt and easy, HL is neither. Along with their religious beliefs impacting women, I don't shop there any more.

My HL is over an hour away so I don't get there often but j actually like what they have to offer..maybe since I don't get to shop there often? I'm not sure. But I hate hate hate checking out. Takes forever and I have to watch them ring each thing up to make sure I'm not over charged.

Like I said in my OP, ours is fairly new, but they seem to not carry a large number of the same item. Lots of empty spaces and what is on hand on has about 2 items on the peg. I wonder how they keep track of inventory and replenishment if they don't actually use a point of sale system that scans the barcode. It just seems like so much extra work.

I still prefer them over Michaels or JoAnns, even with their stupid check outs! I always end up in the slowest one.

One cashier told me that HL was too cheap to upgrade to that system. Mine doesn't have very long waits and they keep it stocked pretty well. When the have the 50% off sale, I can find plenty.

Ours opened in February. Lots of empty pegs all the time, and the ones that do have inventory maybe have 1-2 items per SKU. I've mentioned before that I've been in other HLs that have WAY more name brand items and have been able to find a lot. Maybe things will change when they open the second store in the area in October. This one here, every time I go (which isn't all that often) I have a hard time finding anything to buy. It's actually okay, it just saves me money. I need to really get busy scrapping before buying a bunch more stuff anyway!

I wouldn't say my Hobby Lobby is empty, but I don't find it that long of a wait either, but then again in this frantic and hurried world we live in now it is hard to appreciate slowing down a bit. If I am in a long line, I just daydream about what I am going to do with my new purchases, and then before I know it I am checking out. Take a breath, slow down, enjoy a bit of time to just stop and daydream.

I find it ridiculous that Hobby Lobby somehow thinks its cheaper to manually enter every price and every sale discount. The cost of a one-time upgrade to scanning cash registers would be totally paid for by the decrease in cost they have to spend on checkouts and inventory.

I can't stand the store and when I find myself actually shopping there, I really hate that I have to watch my purchases being rung up to ensure they get the proper discount...although I have to do the same thing at AC Moore and Michael's, too.

One opened this year in Oregon. It has no scanners and is just painful to wait in line. The cashiers aren't too familiar with the products and they spend an inordinate amount of time checking the ad. I walked through it yesterday and there was only one cashier. Several people were in line and there was a bagger. Seriously?!?

I remember reading something about this, perhaps on 2Peas? It is very likely an urban legend, but supposedly because it is a Christian affiliated company, it is something to do with scanning being "the mark of the beast" I did google and found a link to a blog which claims this was said by someone who works there. And of course we all know it must be true if it is on the Internet. And no, I'm not really a conspiracy theorist, it just was the first thing I remembered. I am just jealous that you have huge craft stores that sell lots of scrapbook stuff cheap, even if you do have to line up. Corinne

There isn't much of a line at mine except on Saturdays, but what annoys me the most is that I have to tell the cashier Every. Single. Time. that my item is on sale. I always wonder how many people they rip off each day because they didn't realize they didn't get the sale price.

Corinne LOL, if this was true wouldn't it be on every single HL thread ever posted? Their politics are mentioned every time, I'm sure this would be shared too. Statements like that do not get swept under the rug. Let's start a new one- they wear garlic around their neck to keep vampires away.
