We are finally looking at rings. We have my grandmother's 2 carat stone to work with. Let's see what the Peas have since you all always have great ideas!

Pinterest will have a million or so ideas....what do you like? Gold? Silver? Platinum? Traditional or contemporary, simple or antique?

I don't wear mine anymore. I'd agree with the recommendation to check on Pinterest

Since your diamond is HUGE 😍 I would keep it simple with the ring. Show that beauty off! Jen

What shape is the stone? Round?

Yes, it's round and I'm not sure what metal to set it in.

I'm of the generation where gold settings were the standard but I think white gold or platinum is more timeless these days. I agree with searching Pinterest. Best wishes!!

Yes, it's round and I'm not sure what metal to set it in. Do you like to wear one color jewelry more than another? Do you tend to warmer/cooler colors of clothing?

I have the Tiffany knife edge six prong setting in platinum which is pretty classic. I would think any jeweler would be familiar with it.

Mine is just over 1.25 and it's a classic round prong setting in platinum. I'm with the other pea who said to keep it simple. Is the stone not already in a ring?

My ring looks like this - my wedding ring is an eternity ring and for our 10 year anniversary I added an eternity band with sapphires and diamonds. It's really pretty.

If you're going to have stones also in your wedding band, make sure the setting of your solitaire will accommodate the wedding band.
My wedding band is a channel-set half eternity, and the solitaire prongs are made with a notch on one side (invisible unless you take the ring off and look underneath) so that the wedding band can sit flush against the engagement ring.
We got the set from an estate jeweler. I remember he said, "Well, if your marriage lasts half an eternity, I think you'll be doing just fine." LOL

The wedding band is a matching beveled band with 10 diamonds spaced evenly around the band (like the Tiffany and Co. Etoile band). The third ring i wear with it is my mother's wedding band with 5 diamonds next to each other.

I don't remember how to link, but you could check out pricescope.com in the "Show Me the Bling" forum for many photos of gorgeous diamonds.

I have a 1 carat he bought at Kay so I wanted to get a plain band to highlight my engagement ring. However the sales people talked me right into a beautiful wrap that went with my ring perfectly!
So just go, try different things on, you might be surprised! I was!

Here are my rings ... This is my engagement set which was my late grandmother's except for the diamond ... dh bought a larger one and we had that placed in ... the setting is from the 1940's Almost 10 years ago dh bought me a gorgeous trinity ring which I now wear with my wedding band These are styles that are not that popular now but I still love them Have a great time finding the perfect ring for you

It's still in it's original platinum setting but there's a back story to it. My grandmother wore it while she was working in a sauerkraut factory so it's pretty battered. There are a couple of sapphire smaller stones which have literally been crushed and some are missing. I don't feel comfortable wearing it but in it's day it had to have been absolutely beautiful.

If you like the setting, I would take it to a jeweler and have them give you an estimate to restore it. A jeweler here in Minneapolis rebuilt DH's ring after the hospital staff cut off. Trust me when I say I thought it was destroyed.
They can also help you come up with a custom setting.

I agree with this. Take it to a jeweler and see what they can do. I was given my grandmother's platinum ring. I took it to a jeweler and had the center diamond removed and a setting made for that stone. I then had a pearl put in my grandmother's ring. Pearls are soft and can't take a beating so I only wear it on special occasions. I'm considering removing the pearl and replacing it with a gemstone.

The engagement ring was his great grandmother's from the 1930s. The matching wedding band came a little later...maybe from his grandmother's time?

If you like the type of setting it's in now, it can be restored and probably not as much as you'd think. Platinum is the nicest metal so I'd hate to give that up. If you want it taken out and put in something new, then I'd take it to a jewelry store... not a chain place, an independently owned business. If they're worth anything they have some mounts you can look at to see what you like and they'll be able to get pretty much anything you wish. The place we shop at has high fashion jewelry at affordable prices. I bought a new diamond for my ring there - I wasn't shopping for one! lol. It was meant to be. Spongemom Scrappants can probably give good advice, she works in jewelry.

Dang. That's a big pic and I couldn't make it smaller. Sorry.
also meant to add that he had it made for me. He knows I don't care for a lot of stuff around the solitaire nor on the sides so this is what he came up with. I was so thrilled that he did such a good job. I don't wear a lot of jewelry so simple really does work best for me.
I did see a gorgeous David Yurman ring a while back. It was a crossover setting with that roped looking band. I think it is so pretty! Don't know what you would get for a wedding band but I'm sure you could find something. Judith Ripka used to have some pretty settings a few years ago but haven't looked at her stuff much lately.
For a 2k diamond, I'd stick with something simple that will allow a lot of light underneath it to allow a lot of light to shine through it. Have fun shopping!

I can't figure out how to post a picture - dd's fiance took my stepmom's diamond and used it as a centerpiece for a ring set in gold, there are tiny diamonds along the side of the ring (doesn't encircle it) with some going down the side of the ring. there are also 2 tiny diamonds hidden at the base of the center stone that only she can see when she looks down her finger at the ring - I think he called them love diamonds
her fiance found jewelers who do mostly custom designs, and they worked with him to design a ring that would show off the stone.
