I store cling stamps in 3 ways. Some not all that efficient, but i know where they are.
Little 2x3inch stamps sets, sayings, little flowers, etc. in a recipe box. I have stamped images on 3x5 cards, labeled 1,2,3,4,5,6--keep this on a little binder ring on inside top of box. Then I have stored the little 3x5 stamp sets in rows, on the cling material (but not in cellophane), labeled by number. I refer to the colored stamp index and go right to the row/file with that corresponding number.
My bigger stamp sets 3x5-5x7, on a binder ring, hanging on an s-hook on the Ikea racking, right next to my desk space. The stamps that end up here are ones that I know I will use often and are not tiny. They are right at my fingertips, stored on a binder ring, in original packaging. These are sayings for inside cards, bigger flowers, newer stamps that i know I will use often.
My bigger cling sets are stored in a 3 ring binder. I had a bunch of 8 1/2 x 11 sleeve protectors (school supply product not scrapbooking) and i slid the bigger stamp sets in there. I keep the alphabets in there and border stamps too (on hard clear backing OR in original packaging) . I do have 2 REAL stamp protector inserts that I bought at a scrap store, but do not know where to get more. They are hard plastic and are like a thin clear case that you can put the stamps right on there and shut the case and store it in the 3 ring binder. Love these, but make do with what I have until I can find more of them.....these stamps I do not use real often anyway.....

Categorizing stamps sounds like an impossible task. What about by designer?

Categorizing stamps sounds like an impossible task. What about by designer? The problem I have with that is I've collected stamps for over 30 years and I have thousands of them, many that I picked up here, there and everywhere. Some were bought unmounted at conventions years ago and I don't have a clue who the designer or manufacture is anymore. Others were from obscure little companies that I wouldn't remember anyway. So it makes more sense to me to try to categorize them by what they are, so if I'm looking for a rabbit I only have to look in one or two places instead of in potentially hundreds of places, KWIM? I'm starting to think that the best way would be to have some kind of a computerized system where every image could have multiple searchable tags like My Digital Scraproom uses for digi elements and photos. That would work, but it would be a ton of work to scan everything in and then separate and tag every image individually.

Wow that's a great idea. You could take pics with your phone instead of scan. Just do a few at a time.

True! Great idea! I never even thought of taking photos of them. I'd use my regular camera though, and a dedicated SD card for it so I wouldn't have anything else mixed in. Some of the unmounted ones would still have to be stamped first, but then the images could be photographed with the others. If they were photos, I could just create a photo category in My Digital Scraproom called STAMPS and put them all in there. Now they would be in a visual database and taggable which means they could be searchable! My first step is going to be to go through and get rid of a lot. That will make the task at least a little easier.
