You are right to be worried.
I suspect some testing will be ordered. I wonder if he has either Crohn's or ulcerative colitis. I hope not, but I'd want those ruled out. Also would want gallbladder problems, liver disorders, pancreatic disorders ruled out. Reflux can cause nausea and a full feeling, but isn't likely to cause diarrhea.
Some doctors have a "wait and see" attitude; don't accept that. Hopefully the weight loss will prompt an aggressive search for answers.
Poor kid.
My 25 year old has lost 11 pounds in the last 3 weeks or so due to chronic nausea. Luckily she is still not underweight, though I have no doubt she has some malnourishment going on.
Please keep us posted.

It's good to hear that he wants to go. Hopefully the doctor will be able to easily diagnose whatever is ailing him, and he will be on the road to recovery quickly, and feeling his old self.
(((hugs))) mama.

Unexplained, sudden weight loss is always a cause for concern. Most important thing is to not google and not listen to suggestions from the internet. I'm glad he is being seen and hope the diagnosis is swift.

I would be worried too. I'm glad he is going to the doctor. Hope he gets some answers and can move on to addressing the underlying issues.

Hug to you. Our son was hospitalized for a week when he was 19 for severe depression. He responded immediately to the treatment and went to group sessions for about 6 months. I think it was the boost he needed to cope. He is living happily ever after.......not easy peasy, but he did Rx for awhile and then has been handling life's ups and downs OK.
Prayer for you and son and I hope you get the results we did. It IS scary to know your child is hurting so badly.

Please please please monitor him closely now. Sometimes antidepressants cause a worsening of symptoms in someone so young.
Also, been there, done that, with myself and my younger son. Everything turned out fine so keep a happy heart and a eye open and I'll be thinking of you.

My guess was going to be depression but I didn't want to worry you before you went to the dr. Good for him for being honest and willing to get help.

I am so sorry. My heart hurts for you. This is a scary diagnosis, but SO good that you have it. Keep in mind it can take up to 6 weeks for the meds to work. My daughter has severe anxiety and was able to control it with a lot of work. She finally decided to go on medication and I swear it to you, the difference was miraculous. I didn't even realize how bad it was until it wasn't bad anymore. For her, it took just over 2 weeks for it to take effect and the change over this past year has been outstanding.
Remember that once you start to feel better, you want to get off the meds, because they are tough meds to take, so keep that in mind. Also, one med might not be the right choice for your son.
Keep the faith and stay strong!! It's going to get better!!

Prayers for your son and family. Having experienced this with our DD, please be sure to take care of yourself as well. This will be a long road together. Look up your local chapter of NAMI for excellent support groups for your son and family.

Your update just breaks my heart! I hate to think he is hurting so much.
My youngest brother has been dealing with severe depression for a while now. He makes things worse by stopping his meds from time to time. Please stress to your son the importance of sticking with his meds.

I'm so proud of your son being strong enough to open up with the doctor. That's a great first step.
I'll keep your family in my thoughts.

Please keep your eyes open for drug abuse
depression and drug abuse can go hand in hand
it was the first thing i thought of when you said he was really underweight with no apparent reason
i'm no expert - just living it

zookeeper, I'm so sorry! I'm just reading your update. Your poor son. I'm so glad that you took the lead and got him in to the doctor, and that your son was willing to open up at the office! Prayers that he will start to pull out of the depression now that he is getting help.

We just got back from seeing the doctor. My son is suffering from severe depression to the point that he has had thoughts about hurting himself. He broke down in tears at Dr. J's office. He has lost 26 pounds since January. He does not want to feel this way any more. My heart is breaking. Dr. J sent him for a full lab work up to rule anything else out, but he is convinced that all of my son's symptoms stem from severe depression. He has been given an anti-depressant and an antacid to help calm his stomach. He never eats so the stomach acid builds up and makes him nauseous. Please pray for my son and my family as we hold each other up through this time. I am so scared for my son. I have never seen him so broken before. What a brave young man! Can you get him a psychiatrist appointment soon>> Just keep praising him for being so honest.
