My son is 19 years old. He is 6 feet and a smidge and weighed 160lbs at his last doctor appointment in January. He has lost 12 lbs since January and he looks anorexic. He has been complaining for weeks that he has no appetite and that he sits down to eat and can't even get through a third of the food on his plate. I made him pancakes this morning and he ate one. Not one plate of pancakes...one pancake.
He has also been having loose bowel movements in addition to the loss of appetite and the weight loss. I was shocked when I saw him in the kitchen this morning without a shirt on. I did not realize how skinny he had gotten.
We talked this morning and we are definitely going to go see our doctor this week. Ds19 wants to go so at least he is aware that something is not quite right here. Thankfully, we are blessed with the best family doctor in the world so I know that we will get to the bottom of this.
I am just really worried right now and needed to get it out of my system. Thanks for reading. Ugh.

We just got back from seeing the doctor. My son is suffering from severe depression to the point that he has had thoughts about hurting himself. He broke down in tears at Dr. J's office. He has lost 26 pounds since January. He does not want to feel this way any more. My heart is breaking.
Dr. J sent him for a full lab work up to rule anything else out, but he is convinced that all of my son's symptoms stem from severe depression. He has been given an anti-depressant and an antacid to help calm his stomach. He never eats so the stomach acid builds up and makes him nauseous.
Please pray for my son and my family as we hold each other up through this time. I am so scared for my son. I have never seen him so broken before.

Oh, I am sorry. It is so hard to see our children not feeling well. Hopefully the Dr. will find out right away what is going on and he will be his old self.

That would definitley be worrying. It does sound like something needs investigating. My niece similar symptoms before being diagnosed with Crohn's but there are quite a few gastrointestinal issues that it could be.

i cam imagine your concern, even more because I have a 19 year old son. They are men, but still our "babies", the years have passed so fast. I can't remember if you pray, or would rather have positive thoughts, so I'm doing both as you seek information.

I wonder about celiac disease - everyone thought my friend's daughter had anorexia nervosa until she was diagnosed with celiac disease because she got so skinny.

Glad that your ds is going to the doctor this week. I'm guessing they'll start w/stool samples in order to rule out a bacterial infection that can be treated w/antibiotics. It could be something very easily treated. If it's something more involved then I wish for quick answers and treatment. I also have a 19 year old and they never stop being our babies.

There are many things it could be. (When someone I love gets sick my mind goes crazy with worst case scenarios so I will spare you my crazy ideas.) many problems have easy fixes once you know what to do.

Please keep us posted. Most likely they will run tests and you may not know what is wrong for a little while at least.

I'm glad he's talking with you. My son is about 4.5" taller than your son, but weighs 40 lbs more and is on the thinner side. I can see why you are worried. I hope it's just a diet change. It's pretty amazing what food can do to a kid.
I'm happy you're going to get it checked out. Hoping it's something easy and simple.

One of my nieces had a bunch of problems and finally was diagnosed with celiac disease last year (at 15). A friend's daughter had lifelong stomach issues. After consulting with several doctors she completely cut out gluten and is doing much better. She's about 24 now. I hope you guys can get to the bottom of it quickly, both of the young people I know had a really tough time with feeling sick all the time until they got some answers. Hugs! |

I was also thinking Celiacs. Dd lost 20+ pounds, had loose stools, very weak, and never wanted to eat due to pain. After a scope we saw the issues. We are having a special celiac genetics test done once it gets approved to see how sensative she is. She cant even have gluten cross contamination. Its that bad.
It took almost a year for her gut to heal. 6 months on NG tube feeds of medical formula.
Praying the dr can figure it out and your son can get on the road to recovery!

Awww.....I'm sorry he's going through this, and of course, you're a worried Momma. Aside from the loss of appetite and loose stools, has he mentioned the pain that other posters mentioned? Has he been feeling depressed? I've sent up prayers for him, and also sending (( hugs)).

A friend's college sophomore had similar symptoms. She was applying for her major & needed recommendations from current professors & good grades in a couple classes she was finding difficult last semester. The doctor concluded they were stress induced. Hope you get answers, & he gets on the road to recovery. (((hugs)))

If you find any answers, please let us know. I've had similar symptoms and am down 32 lbs in 9 months. Lots of tests, but no real answers yet.
Praying for him, it's miserable.
