((HUGS)) I am sorry your son is having to deal with this. If this antidepressant doesn't help or has undesirable side effects, ask the doctor to switch it.

I just read your update, and I'm SO sorry he's so depressed!!! But also, VERY glad he's getting help now, and I pray that him admitting out loud what he's been feeling gave him some relief. I have been through this, so I truly know how he feels! Do you think he'd be open to counseling, also ? This is obviously so hard on you as his Mom....sending up prayers and many ((( hugs !!!)))

Your ds was very brave to admit that he's depressed. Good for him. Therapy will be essential. The meds will help take the edge off, but your ds needs to work through this and learn some coping strategies from a professional. W/the meds and therapy your son will find that life can be very good, again.

Prayers of strength and healing for your son and family. So glad he was able to open up and has you for support. A very scary place to be in, but oh so much better than the alternative of not knowing what he has been struggling with - Positive thought coming your way.

So sorry about your son. So glad at least he knew he needed help and agreed to go to the doctor even though he didn't tell you why. That is a good sign. That he wants help. Prayers for your son.

I am so sorry.
I think it's important to be sure that the depression has caused the nausea and not eating; because depression could be the result of feeling ill for so long. I'm glad he's being treated for the depression, but if his appetite doesn't return fairly quickly I do hope you'll take him back to the doctor.
Did he order any labwork? A hyperactive thyroid gland can cause weight loss and anxiety and can certainly lead to depression.
I hope things turn around for your son very soon.

I am sorry that your son(and you all) are going through this. It took a lot of courage for your son to reach out for help, and I am so glad he did. All too often, kids seem to hold it all in, or only tell their friends and don't get the help they desperately need. It might be rough for a bit but he took a giant leap in the right direction. My thoughts and prayers go out to you all.

Hugs to you all.
A friend's daughter was suffering the same way and she found that drinking Carnation Instant Breakfast was something she could handle. It gave her calories and protein and proved to be a good gateway to getting back to eating.

Did he order any labwork? A hyperactive thyroid gland can cause weight loss and anxiety and can certainly lead to depression. Yes...we did go for a full blood panel and my son has weekly check ups with our doctor to make sure that he is gaining weight. We should have the lab results tomorrow.

Dear OP,
I just read your update. First of all let your son know this is in no way his fault! It wasn't caused by anything he did or didn't do. It is a physical illness (just like diabetes 1-the one you're born with) and it's caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. That's it. It has nothing to do with him not being strong enough or anything ridiculous like that. When those chemicals get out of balance in the brain the only thing to fix them is to re-balance them with medication. Sometimes talk therapy helps too. My son has depression and I have it too. Usually it runs in families.
Be very grateful (and I know you are) he was open enough to confess it at this appointment. That was a huge step for him and know he can move forward with getting the help he needs.
One thing that I recommend to everyone I know who has clinical depression is to find a doctor who can give him a blood test for the defective gene MTHFR. It messes up your body's ability to absorb B12 even if on regular blood tests it looks like your B12 results come back okay. I suffered for 10 long years of what they called "treatment resistant depression" including 20 treatments of ECT (shock therapy) before my incredible Integrative Therapy doctor tested me for MTHFR and found out I have two markers for it. I started taking the correct form of B12 and my depression disappeared. All it takes is a simple blood test so I encourage people to have it done, because if it turns out that they have it the correct form of B12 will cure the depression. I do still take antidepressants though to keep me in remission.
I wish you the best of luck and good health to your son. I've got to run. If you have any questions please feel free to pmail me.
