I think my Canon Selphy finally bit the dust. In the middle of printing a stack of photos, 3 of them are fine, the next were only half printed. Long story short, after much internet research and taking it apart (somewhat), I think I'm going to have to replace the Selphy.
What small photo printer would you recommend? It would print 4x6 at the largest, which was fine with me. I liked the portability of it and that it would print more than one photo per 4x6 page. I picked the Selphy because I knew I wouldn't use it ALL the time, rather sporadically, and wanted to save ink.
So, please give me your recommendations.
Thanks!!
Anna

The Epson PM-400 of course!!! Thanks! I bought my Selphy back when there was the big debates between Selphy and the Epson (I think it was the charm or something like that.) I chose the Selphy because it didn't use ink so whenever I turned it on after not using it for a long time, it wouldn't waste ink trying to "refresh" itself. Does the Epson do that--refresh ink after a while? And why would you recommend it? THANKS!!

I took it with me on a cruise in Russia last year, I've taken it to crops. I'm in the middle of a project and it crapped out on me, I'm so NOT HAPPY.

I bought the Epson PM-400 and started a thread here. Do a search-you'll find all the information (and more) that you need on it.

Thanks for letting me know about the previous threads--I had no idea. I really did like my Selphy.
So for those of you with this printer, does it come with software to edit photos? For example, the Selphy had basic basic editing features, and I could print four pictures on a 4x6 sheet just within the software that was included. I do not have photoshop and no intention of getting it. I have a mac.
If this printer will let me do multiple photos on a 4x6, then I'm almost sold.

I read all the other threads about the PM-400 and didn't really see much info about non-use for several months and how it affects the print heads or cartridges. So I'm not sold so far (but my selphy is still working for now).

Not sure about the software because I always edit with photoshop elements, but I can definitely chime in on the non-use. I don't print that many photos so the printer can sit unused for several weeks. I have never had a single issue with it. It prints beautiful photos every time. In fact the cartridge that came with the printer lasted forever! I just replaced it a couple of weeks ago.

Also, the Epson is almost twice what the Selphy is price-wise.

The Epson has much better photo quality than the Selphy. It prints true 4x6 and 5x7. The older PM models had issues with the ink heads clogging if it wasn't used for long periods, but the PM-400 has been improved.
Have you searched for all the previous threads?

I converted to a PM-400 and have never looked back. I'm a sporadic picture printer and I have never had any issues. I was hesitant to invest in Epson after having a horrible printer 10 years ago. But I gave it a chance and I'm so glad I did! I love the PM-400 over the Selphy for numerous reasons. I especially love that I'm not cornered into buying an ink/paper bundle. I can shop around for different paper packs and the ink cartridge lasts much longer than the Selphy ever did. Plus it prints fantastic photos. Much better than the Selphy for sure.

I am particular about my editing so I like an editing program with several specific features/options. As far as the non-use, I agree completely with streetscrapper. I have went many, many weeks without printing and bam (!)....I print and it's always perfect! I keep paper loaded in the printer at all times so when I want to print a pic on a whim it's ready to go. I love that I can print photos down to the basement when I'm up in bed or watching tv or wherever. I often use the PL app or PicStich to put (2) 3x4's together so that I can print a 4x6. I really can't talk enough about it! When I first got it, I had an issue printing from PSE and the peas helped me IMMENSELY! Love that so many others have this printer because I know there's always someone to help. I will now shut up. I could go on and on lol.

I had the Selphy 900 for 4 years and tolerated it. I used it occasionally to print. LOL I did not like the quality of the prints.
I got the Picturemate PM-400 for Christmas. I have printed over 100 photos with the ink cartridge it came with. The photos are bright and vibrant. I just love them and that's why I'm finally printing more photos!
I turn my printer off when I'm not using it. I use it maybe once or twice a month? I don't use it daily or even weekly. I have not had a problem with the ink "refreshing" or anything like that.
Unlike the Selphy, you don't need the app/software to print to the Picturemate PM-400 from your phone. You can print right from your photo stream, or from another app like Project Life or PicFrame that you use to make a collage on a 4x6.

There were lots and lots. I read two or three of the longest ones. They did mention not having problems after waiting a "few weeks" in between printing, but I can go MONTHS AND MONTHS between projects.

I have done some reading on the Epson website, and the PM 400 will NOT work with my Mac OS I'm running, so I'd have to use the printer directly, ie. either print from my phone or use a USB to get pics off my laptop to the printer. Is it possible to print more than one photo on the 4x6 page? The Selphy will do 2 photos on a 4x6 page, 4 photos on a 4x6, and even "thumbnails" which are tiny. This is a HUGE selling point if the Epson does print this way--I do many mini albums, and need the smaller print sizes.

I did see that--but it's different than what the Selphy does. What nicolep uses is software to create a "collage" of two photos to print on a 4x6.With the Selphy, I can choose the photos I want right at the printer and it will print the two together on a 4x6 sheet. I don't want to have to use another software to create "collages" to be able to print 2 or 4 pics per 4x6, when the Selphy will do it when I select that kind of photo. I hope I'm explaining myself clearly.

So I finally realized I should just read the manual. It turns out that it will do multiple photos per sheet, as far as I can tell. If anyone who has done this before can confirm it, that would be great. I'm most concerned that it won't work with my computer, I'll have to only use my phone, which is a problem as a lot of the albums I am working on are of photos from years ago, not on my phone.

annaintx it sounds like you were really happy with the Selphy so maybe upgrading to the 1200 is exactly what you need - and you can use the ink and paper you already have :)

It sounds like you're actually trying to talk yourself out of the Epson and that you'd be happier with the upgrade. Good luck with whatever you decide!

I really love my older PM 225. I love the picture quality. I have a Selphy as well. It just doesn't compare. I also have smallish Epson printer that prints beautiful prints as well. I didn't get it for that. It's an Epson XP 630
