I started throwing pens and pencils into a couple of those photo/video boxes this past spring. It seems like I have a ton of pens and pencils all over this house. What I found in my dd's room alone while we were spring cleaning was staggering.
Yesterday I sat down to go through the boxes- ditch the bad ones and sort the rest. I sharpened all the pencils (to make sure none of them were the crappy 'won't sharpen' kind)- but they don't all have much of an eraser. There's a lot - like half of a gallon zip lock bag, each.
My question is- as a HS teacher, would you want them? We have Back to School Night next Wednesday and I was thinking about giving the bag of pencils to dd's math teacher and the pens to her English teacher. (Or maybe I can pick up pencils cups at Dollar Tree and give each teacher a cupful?) I'm thinking HS teachers have to hear the 'I don't have a pen/pencil' excuse a lot - and then you're losing your own stash of extras frequently. Maybe a stash of loaners would be welcome? Or would that be weird?
I'll have to do it on the sly, if I do it. DD would be mortified if she knew.

I'm not a teacher, but I would think the teachers wouldn't care, especially high school teachers. I give a big package of pens and pencils to each of my son's high school teachers at the beginning of the year. Not all kids bring pencils or pens to school.
High school teachers don't ride the school supply train like elementary teachers have.

If I was a teacher I would appreciate them.

Yes. Emphatic yes! I had a parent give me left over pens, pencils, colored pencils, markers, calculators, etc when her last one graduated. It was a wonderful gift!

I guess I feel a little weird handing over a bag of used pencils/pens. I don't know why. I mean, I'm not disguising it as a 'gift' or anything.

YES!!! I am a teacher and my niece must have given me 50 pens and pencils a year ago. Just put some eraser toppers on the pencils whose erasers are gone

I am a high school teacher and I would love this kind of gift. Even high school kids lose or forget their writing utensils.

What a great idea! I think I'll do this too. DD always has more pencils laying around than she could use in all her years of school.

i have been cleaning out. i must have had a couple hundred pens and pencils to get rid of. mine went to goodwill, but i would think that a teacher would be able to use them for the kids who don't have one. great idea.

I think pencils will be especially helpful for standardized testing time.

I would always ask the custodians for sone of the pencils and pens and paper left on lockers at the end of the year. These were freely available to students the next year

I brought in a bag of sharpened pencils to dds 5th grade teacher one year. They were ones that my kids no longer wanted for whatever reason (some of them were "character" pencils like Hannah Montana, LOL) The teacher was very appreciative as it was later in the school year and I'm sure their pencil stash had long run out. I remember thinking that maybe the students would take better care of their pencils knowing that the only alternative was using the dorky Hannah Montana pencil that was left in the free pencil bin.

Having subbed at the high school, any teacher who would turn those down hasn't been teaching long. there are kids who purposely show up without a pencil or pen. It's so satisfying to take their excuse away.

No excuse, they know which are online and which on paper!

I would take them in a heartbeat! I guess as an elementary teacher I failed to catch the supply train. Many of my kids come to school without the supplies they need. At any rate I would be grateful to have a bag of pre-sharpened "loaners" for the students who need one. This is a very kind thing for you to do!

Let's just say that I sold a bag of used pens/pencils on ebay! I don't know of any teacher that wouldn't want them
