Don't laugh. When we got married umpteen years ago, we were given so many sets of sheets, some were still in their packaging until recently.
But it now that I'm all grown up, momma wants a nice set of sheets. Not norm scratchy sheets but sleep like the dead sheets. Recommendations? I finally got my frugal DH on board. Did he care that his old sheets came from packaging without ups codes and had labels from stores long closed? Nope. It was a point of pride.

I tried some microfiber ones and hated the feel.
I have some that are very, very soft so I looked at the label and they are 50% cotton and 50% microfiber.
Peacock Alley sheets are wonderful, but cost way, way too much. I found some at Tuesday Morning a few years ago for a reasonable price and love them, but could/would never pay full retail for them.

I found some that I absolutely love but they are pricey. Bohocomforts.com
They are bamboo sheets and are just so nice and soft. I love them!

Macy's is having a good sale right now on their Hotel line of sheets. Totally love that line, beautiful, high thread count sheets.
Good sheets are a must!

oh, and go for broke and buy some nice Downey fabric softener in that lovely lavender vanilla scent too. When you pull back the bed covers you are enveloped in that dreamy scent!

I hoard my old (ahem, vintage) sheets because the quality of contemporary sheets is so crappy now. I have sheets on my daughter's bed that were mine when I was a teen. They were ordinary sheets back then, but, they feel like a million bucks compared to the average sheets you can buy now.
I don't know about the high end brands. I buy my sheets from Costco, but, even those are hit and miss. I have had certain batches shred to pieces after a few years.
*Sigh* I get depressed when I think too much about the decline in quality of a lot of our everyday products! I have to remember that many have improved over time, as well....
Good luck! Erin

I love my Costco sheets. I only buy 100% cotton.
They won't last decades, but they do get softer and softer the more you use them. I would guess they last 3-5 years?

I recently replaced my old sheets (which I loved but are no longer manufactured) with the hotel collection from Macy's. While they are thinner than the Egyptian cotton sheets I had, the Macy's sheets are super soft and have washed up beautifully thus far.

Buying sheets is a nightmare. I try to choose a higher thread count sheet set, but then they feel flimsy and have a slick satiny feel to them I hate them. I want good sturdy sheets that are still soft to the touch. More like (good) hotel sheets, I guess. But those I've found labeled that way are still not like those.

Don't laugh but I bought some from the Girl Scouts and they are the BEST sheets I have ever had. So flipping soft. I have had them since October and they have held up wonderfully. I wash and put them right back on. Best part $40, any size. LOVE them. I don't know if all Girl Scouts participate in this fund raiser or not.

Bad advice for nice sheets. Fabric softener coats the fibers to make you think it is softening the fabric but you'll eventually ruin your sheets.
I recommend Sferra, Frette and Anichini.

I recommend Sferra, Frette and Anichini. Well, to each his own on the fabric softener debate. I don't use it on towels, because it makes them less absorbent, but I do like it on my sheets. It's not 'bad' advice, its just a preference.

don't have any suggestions for brands, but DO spring for HIGH THREAD COUNT... I never thought there was really any difference, and used to sleep on chintzy cheap low-thread count sheets-- then we switched to 400 or 500 thread count- it was heaven!!

I ordered a set of Serta Microfiber sheets on QVC, really not expecting much... They are my favorite. They get washed twice a week now and put right back on the bed. I adore these sheets. They are silky soft.. they do like to wrinkle, but that doesn't bother me. I went back to their site to see the exact name. Appears they are on clearance now, so I'm off to finally buy another set or two so have a few extra sets.

I am systematically replacing all my sheets in the house with these from peachskinsheets.com. So tired of slimy, pilling sheets that do not last! Some of the worst have been very high-thread count and expensive.

I had a set from Costco that I hated with a passion. They made a *rustling* type of noise when you shifted in bed. Hated them. The ones we have now are Liz Claiborne from Penneys and I love them. They are really soft. I got them on sale then used a 20% off coupon. Even the salesclerk commented that that was a great deal! I would never pay full price for sheets as they are ridiculously expensive ~ especially for a king-size bed.

I have Peacock Alley sheets from Tuesday Morning and love them so much. Have used them for 4 years, and they are as soft as when new. They are 350 thread count. It's not necessary to buy high, high thread count. It's the quality of the cotton that makes them soft and smooth. That's why sheets made from Egyptian cotton are so desirable and more expensive. But I really think they are worth it for comfort and longevity.

My advice to you is to take some time and research the different types of sheets so that you can determine which type you like the best. Personally, I hate sateen. I like sheets made with a long staple cotton thread. QVC has many different kinds. You might want to look at their site. They have so many different kinds. I like their site because you can try them for 30 days. If you don't like them, just send them back. Another good place is thecompanystore.com They offer many different kinds.

I know this will sound odd, but the makers of the Peach Skin Sheets that a PP mentioned, have a program that is used for fundraisers. My daughter has sold them for cheer for several years. They are 1800 thread count and the cost is the same no matter the size you get. We sell them for $37. Not sure if all programs do. I currently have a set on my bed. I have 2 and my kids both have a set. I need to get more.

I think "thread count" has long ago lost its meaning. They up the thread count, but use thinner threads, so sometimes buying 800 TC sheets today is like the cheap 180 TC sheets of yesteryear. I'm having a terrible time finding decent sheets myself - I want 100% cotton that aren't made for 35" mattresses (we have a pillowtop mattress with a 2" memory foam topper and a 1.5" thick sherpa mattress pad and every pair of sheets I've bought is still WAY too big). If they didn't develop a rip in the bottom sheet within 6 months, that'd be great too, I'm so tired of replacing sheets!
(sorry I didn't have any valuable advice, but thanks for letting me commiserate about crappy sheets - and thanks for posting this, I'm going to check out some of the peas' suggestions too)

I have the Kirkland brand from Costco and they are like silk...so soft. Don't get the Charisma brand...they didn't last a year. My husband must be restless and his dry feet end up making holes on his side. I think the Kirkland brand are probably the softest sheets I have ever owned and I think they are a high thread count as well.

I think as far as sheet go: you get what you pay for. For me I'm really picky and have issues with what touches my skin. It has to be soft and smooth. I notice things like natural fibers-that's critically important to me because of how it feels on my skin and how it "breathes". The best place I've found to get sheets is LLBean. Sure they aren't cheap. But to me they are worth every penny. I have a choice of the sateen which are soft like silk or the percale sheet which is like the sheets of long ago, the kind you remember from your childhood days that gets softer with every wash. Their sheets come in different cottons, Pima cotton and Egyptian cotton and also flannel. What I especially like is they aren't sold in sets-you can buy just a fitted sheet so if you are like me and use a duvet cover and don't even use a top sheet you don't have to pay for one. Best of all is their guarantee. Guaranteed for life. If you don't like it for any reason return it for a refund or exchange. The last sheet I bought from them was a fitted Pima cotton percale sheet for my Queen bed. I that sheet. Once a week it comes off my bed, goes in the wash and gets put right back on. And it has certainly gotten softer and softer. I'd have more and more if I could afford them but for now one is enough. Someone else mentioned The Company Store. I haven't bought any of their sheets but did buy a down comforter from them some years ago. I'm sure they offer good quality too, but I can't vouch for them.

I always buy 100% cotton in the highest thread count available at TJ Maxx/Marshalls. I have yet to be disappointed. You can get some great deals on quality sheet sets. I usually spend about $40-50 on a queen sheet set. I replace them every so often, not because they are not holding up but because I like crisp white sheets and over time with repeated washing they tend to go yellowish or grayish. I hate that.
For winter, I am pretty fond of my flannel Ikea sheets, too.

I am pretty easy, I probably couldn't tell the difference between expensive and cheap sheets! Good thing, we are on a tight budget. But I will keep ideas in mind and maybe sometime try some nice, reasonably priced sheets.
