I used to use a flat iron and hold it just above the embossing powder. Embossing tools came on the scene awhile after I started stamping and embossing. I've been a stamper about 10 years longer than I've been a scrapbooker, and I've been scrapping a lot of years. I much prefer my heat gun for embossing, but the iron did work in those early days. So did a toaster oven supposedly, but I can't remember if I ever tried that. Have I bought back up tools? Not intentionally, except for one. I HAVE tried many different types of circle cutters, but not as a back up. I was just trying to find the one I liked best. The only tool I bought as a back up was a second Cricut Expression when I got a good deal on Black Friday. I wanted a back up after spending so much money on cartridges, just in case my original Expression ever died. Seriously, Cricut was the most expensive electronic cutting system in the long run because of those cartridges and the Gypsy. However, I didn't buy the Expression 2 solely as a back up. The deciding factor was that the E2 cut details better. It wasn't as good as the Explore would be, and which I recently bought so my son could use it to cut leather for projects he designs. Yes, I still have both Expressions. As back ups for my Explore, of course.

I do, especially scissors. I must have close to a dozen of the little orange handled Fiskars detail scissors scattered around my studio. I also have two backup electronic cutters, a back up paper trimmer (several, actually) and other stuff.
But the QUEEN of all backup tools would be my BFF's mom! Not only does she have backup tools for just about everything, but they're all packed up in tidy little cases stored close to where she might use them. It's always funny watching her unpack at a crop because she has all this stuff packed like little craft supplies bento boxes! It's quite amazing, actually.

My biggest backup tool is a 2nd big shot - a couple of years ago, Tuesday Morning had them for $30 and in a really pretty blue color. I knew that if the one I already had ever broke, I would need to get a new one RIGHT AWAY, and I sure didn't expect I'd ever find one for that price.
But smaller stuff - scissors, piercing tools, I have doubles and triples of. At first it was that I wanted one to keep on my table and one that stayed in my go bag, but it's expanded past that. I just like tools.

I do this too. I have multiple pair of scissors and paper piercers on the different workspaces I craft on. Having an extra Big Shot is a huge plus. Just need to have more acrylic plates!! Sure wish they lasted longer before getting all warped out of shape.

I do have a backup heat gun, still in its little box. I had 2 of them crap out on me within a span of a couple of weeks, so when I ordered a replacement from a different company, I ordered two. The one I opened is working just fine, but I feel good knowing if it quits, I barely have to pause...

I have a back up heat gun because when Walmart clearanced them out years ago, I bought a second one. Then a couple of months ago, Burkes Outlet (similar to Tueday Morning) had a pink AC heat gun cheap and I got it too. One of my original Ranger heat guns keeps threatening to die so I have a backup to my backup.
I have two ATG guns, two TM Tiny Attachers, someone gifted me a Big Shot last October so I now have two. I used to keep my Zip'eMate "loaded" for embossing dies but now I can do that with the extra Big Shot. I have multiple scissors, multiple favorite white ink pads and black ink pads. Oh and red.
