do you adjust them so that all you see is road or do you adjust so that you see a little of your vehicle? I know you're supposed to adjust so that you see nothing but road but I have a hard time interpreting what I'm seeing if I do that so I have to be able to see a little sliver of my vehicle for context.

I adjust mine so I can see the road and a little bit of the car. If I adjust it to just see the road it just feels wrong.

Mine are set to see a little sliver of my car. I have to have some point of reference too. It is kinda like knowing where your own behind is so you don't go knocking into folks.

I prefer to be able to see a sliver of car. Even adjusting them way allows me to see the entire lane of road in most situations.
I will however adjust my mirrors while driving in some situations. I know of two local on ramps where the angle is such that I have to drastically adjust my left mirror as I approach the highway/expressway to be able to check for traffic already on the road.

I have to see the side of my vehicle. My depth perception sucks.

I adjust them while leaning over toward the window. If I do that and adjust so I see a sliver of the car in that position it pretty much eliminates the blind spot. You don't see the side of the car when sitting up straight in the seat, but I'd much rather reduce or eliminate the blind spot than see the side of the car.

A sliver of the car. My DH when he drives my car adjusts them so that there is no car in the view and I can't figure out why he needs to be able to see 3 to 4 lanes over from the back side of the car???

This is exactly what prompted the question. DH had been driving my van and when I got in this morning, it took me a second to understand why I didn't understand what I was seeing.

My DH when he drives my car adjusts them so that there is no car in the view and I can't figure out why he needs to be able to see 3 to 4 lanes over from the back side of the car??? Conversely, you know your own car is there, why do you need to see it? Doing that just makes your blind spot bigger. It's much safer to be able to see everything going on around you so if you need to make an evasive maneuver, you can. I know where my car is, I don't need to see any part of it.

I was taught that you should be able to see part of your vehicle - the rear door handle showing just at the edge of the mirror, because that's the only way to make sure you've got it angled to show the beside/behind you spot that the mirrors are designed for...
No idea if that's true, but I do see part of my vehicle at the edge of the mirror... I find it oddly reassuring...lol I can see right from my vehicle all the way out (first through the mirror, then out the window)... Works for me that way - I reverse down an alleyway pretty regularly and I'm the only one on the street that can do it...lol

I adjust side mirrors to see barely the side of the car. I also adjust the rear view mirror to barely see the bottom of the back hatch window. that is in my car.
in the Jeep I need a little more side car showing in the side mirrors... I think it is because it is taller and longer than my car... the rear view is about the same in both.

I like to see a sliver of car, too. I set them so I can use the side mirrors to back down my steep, curving driveway. That way I can follow the edge of the driveway and not drive into the garden.
