My dad was a Driver Ed. teacher who knew and enforced proper driving etiquette, so radar detectors were a definite no go. I guess I just never considered getting one since I grew up without one.
On top of that, I had a bad car accident in 2009 that scared the heck out of me. I was speeding and somehow managed to do a combination of 5 flips and rolls through a deep ditch and ended up in a corn field. My air bag didn't go off, but I was wearing my seatbelt (Thank goodness for my dad and his insistence that I should always wear one!) so I stayed inside the vehicle.
They had to use the Jaws of Life to get me out of my mangled car. The medical personnel who attended to me were astonished that I was not only alive, but fully conscious and practically injury-free. I had minor cuts from the glass flying out of my windows, a badly bruised shoulder, and vertigo for months.
Since then, I've driven the speed limit and become a super careful driver. Even if I had a radar detector, I wouldn't use it because I stick to going the speed limit nowadays anyway. I learned my lesson!
