Never. I have worked for emergency services for 14 years. Having seen the difference between driving the speed limit and going just 10 over I will never speed or allow my DH to. I used to when I was younger and had no kids.

I have owned 2 or 3 of them over the years but not in a really long time. It seems like every time I would get one, technology would change and my radar detector would not longer detect the upcoming radar. These days, like Comwalla said, the speed limits are pretty high in much of Texas. Heck, there is one stretch with an 85 mph speed limit and others with 75 to 80. There is one stretch that I drive when I visit my DS that it is only 65 instead of the 75 that it will change to. I still haven't figured out why because it is not a populated area. Anyway, especially when I am coming home and the speed limit drops in this area after I have been driving the higher speed for the last 150 miles, I am surprised I have not gotten a ticket (knock on wood). Most of the time, when I am on the highway though, I put it on cruise control and cruise along with other traffic.

I honestly didn't realize they were still being made. I've never used one. I got pulled over (first time in 20 years) about 6 months ago. I was on the highway doing 71 in a 60. The $144 ticket stunk, but I deserved it :/

Honestly I didn't know they still made them. No I don't have one. If I get pulled over that's my own fault. I fully admit to speeding but only enough to keep up with traffic. Which also means blowing past blue hairs...I think they are more dangerous to be honest. I took a defensive driving class and the instructor said that usually those that were speeding were safer than those who were driving slower. She was not talking about those weaving in and out of traffic, etc. just those that were cruising along in more open areas but over the speed limit. She said the reason is because most of those that are speeding are constantly scanning the area all around because they are looking for cops; therefore, they knew about everything around them including other vehicles, etc. The slow person who was cruising was much more likely to have tunnel vision where they were only focused on what was in front of them and not what was behind, to the sides, etc.

Okay. You were the one that said you assumed they were illegal elsewhere. So I was just letting you know they are in fact not. Other people on this thread think they are illegal too but in fact they are not. Just a bit of knowledge for the day.

Never used one although DH had one back in the 70s. Never had a ticket either. I don't use my cruise control, I feel like it makes me a lazy driver.

My husband had one in his car but he hasn't used it in a while, at least when I am in the car with him. Who knows what he does when he is alone!
The car we use for long distance trips is a gas guzzler so we don't speed on those trips, no radar needed.

That is one of the main uses of cruise control. set it and you never speed.
I do feel really sorry for people who live in areas with the slower speed limits. Not only do you have to deal with taking forever to get anywhere, you have to deal with all the extra traffic that usually goes with slow freeway speed limits. yuck.

I used to about 25 years ago. My ex bf was a truck driver and they commonly used them (back then anyway) and he got me one for my car. I used it for a while but I think it quit working or I got a different car and forgot to transfer it or something. I don't even know where it is now.

Not only lower speed limits but mostly 2 lane roads (with one lane going each way) PLUS farmers moving equipment which can be slow. And on top of all that we have to drive about 20 miles just to get to town in the first place. Luckily there usually isn't a lot of traffic though.

Cruise control for me! DH went on a road trip once with some buddies and one of them had one, so they used it. I still have a mark on my window where it was attached (they took my car) but I don't think we've ever owned one ourselves.

Am I the only one wondering how you blew by an officer while using your radar detector? Maybe I'm not understanding how exactly they work (I haven't ever used one) but isn't the point of those things to alert you to radars being used in the area so you can slow down? And I'll totally admit to speeding. I don't in the 70-80 zones, but in the 55-65 zones? Yep, I tend to have a lead foot. I don't weave through traffic or anything like that though. I tend to go with the flow of traffic, albeit the flow of traffic in the fast lane rather than the slow lane.

Not because I am a necessarily a rule follower, but mostly because I drive a 15 year old Suburban and it doesn't speed any where any more.

No I don't. Firstly, they're illegal. Secondly, I prefer to stick to the speed limit. Do you not have cruise control?
I'm curious to know why someone would choose to have a radar detector. Is it so you can race along over the speed limit then slow down only when there is a radar in the area? Then what, as soon as you go past the radar you start speeding again?

We haven't used one in close to 20 yrs.
My last speeding ticket was 18 yrs ago. (funny enough...crossing into Ohio...Marietta, OH to be exact)
I was pulled over about 14 yrs ago doing some intown driving. I made no excuses and once he checked my driving record, he let me off with a warning.
My kids still see me speeding...and I tell them that it is against the law and if I'm pulled over, I'll accept my consequences. I also told them (having young drivers) that I'm going to get a whole lot more leeway and grace with my driving record, than any of them will get with brand new driving records.

I haven't owned one for 15+ years. I used to use one when I was younger and driving through rural MN. Living in suburban Chicago, if traffic is moving, it's at or above the speed limit anyhow. If it's not moving, I don't need to watch my speed. I use my cruise or just keep up with traffic on road trips. The drive across Wisconsin is boring but I don't need to piss off one of their very plentiful state troopers by having him see a detector mounted on my windshield. Combine a detector and IL plates blasting through his state while headed to MN and I could guarantee myself a ticket.

I think that radar detectors used to work because police radar had to constantly ping out (and the detector found that signal). I think these days, the radar guns are instant on: point, pull the trigger, get the reading. No time for the radar detector to find anything. I've never had one or used one; general "wisdom" in these parts is that most cops don't bother with anything under 10 over. Although honestly, I don't feel safe driving a car that's going over 75 mph anyhow (our freeway speeds are 65 mph). My last car, because it was getting on in years, was starting to shake around that speed. As for the blue hairs, all I can say is that I love driving on roads that also have a MINIMUM speed posted.

I've never owned one but I speed all the time so I'm not a rule follower My "rule" is I only speed when the limit is above 45. So if the speed limit is 60 me and my black pearl are going 75ish! I've never had a speeding ticket. 29 years old and have been driving since I was 17.

Here is more info on how the situation happened-- I saw a dark blue car way up ahead of me with his lights on and then he pulled back out in I was going with the traffic flow.. I had just passed a sign that posted your speed and then I passed his car. He did not have his radar gun on since he was driving. It is difficult to use cruise control when there is a lot of traffic and curves . I don't drive like a bat out of hell but I did like to use it as as a " safety net" .so when I got a little heavy on the gas pedal.i would never endanger me,my family , or anybody lease out there. Most people here tend to drive 10-15 miles over the speed limit.

I don't. I just use cruise control. In Texas you can drive 75 to 80 mph. How fast does one need to go? How much are you speeding that you'd be driving fast enough to get pulled over? That's dangerous. Slow the fuck down. I love cruise control! I do typically drive 5-10 (which means 70-75 max around here) mph above the posted speed limit on the highways. Any slower and you run the risk of being run over by all the truckers. In town I'm a much more conservative driver, but mostly because my older KIA gets really lousy mileage in stop-n-go traffic and I use less gas driving slower. To answer the OP's question, no, I've never used a radar detector. Believe me or not, I don't care.

I've never owned a radar detector. I'm careful to stay under 10mph over the limit and use cruise control on long trips. Haven't had a speeding ticket since college.
I tend to get tickets (maybe 2-3 in my adult life) for things like failure to come to a complete stop with no traffic around or failure to use my turn signal at an intersection where there is only one way to go. Seriously. When cops have nothing better to do, they come looking for me.

I had one many, many years ago. We lived out in the sticks and the roads were all two lane. So if you wanted to get anywhere less than an hour and half, you sped. I rarely speed unless it is to keep up with traffic so I won't get ran over and even then it is never more than 10 over the posted speed.
