The post about radar detectors and "foiling" the police made me think of something I've noticed lately. Some people have a plastic cover over their license plate that seems to allow it to be visible only at a direct angle. So you can see the numbers if you're right behind the car, but they're fuzzy or completely obscured from a side angle. I was wondering if the purpose was to allow you to use toll lanes without paying (and without getting caught) or to make it difficult for the red light cameras to see your plates.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I'm guessing it can't be legal but I see this more and more often here.

I have seen those, and I believe they are illegal, but whether or not anyone is ever made to get rid of them is another question altogether.

They're illegal where I am from. And by illegal I mean it'll cost you $200.
I don't think the cops enforce it much for its own sake, but it does give them a valid reason to stop you.

yes, it's illegal and for a while there was a spray paint that only showed up on cameras like cops or toll booths that also obscured the plate. But definitely illegal

Up here they are used A LOT but I believe illegal. We have photo radar and it is supposed to make the plate unreadable - when the picture is taken it is just a bright flash mark instead of numbers and letters. Do they work? Not sure.
I have friends that have the spray for the same reason.

Yes, the purpose is for the red light cameras - they don't get picked up from the camera's angle. They are illegal in our state.

I had no idea there was a purpose to them! Some times I really have no sneaky or crooked mind

I believe that anything that obscures a license plate is illegal. Shame on the companies who make things like this and radar detectors where the sole purpose is to avoid or break the law.

Illegal but I see them, and the "paint" on cars here all of the time.

It's against the law in TX to have anything that obscures a license plate. I just don't think it's enforced enough.

Yes, that, and in TX you have to have a front license plate too but that was never enforced either. Hubby never had one of the front of his sports car in the 14 years we lived there. He was never pulled over. In fact, when he traded his car in for a new model the dealer asked if he wanted holes drilled for the front plate, and hubby said no. The dealer said most people did not get the holes drilled for the front. Another interesting topic.

And now that I think about it, are they putting the plastic covers on the front plates too or only the back. I have only seen them on the back but don't see them much where I am now.

Anything that obscures the license plate is illegal here in MD - I think the fine is about $70.00. Not sure how well it's enforced, though.
